Redistricting Commission Meets
The San Diego Redistricting Commission has voted to hold an additional meeting at 2 p.m. today to continue discussion on the final boundaries for San Diego City Council districts. It will be held in City Council Chambers on the 12th floor of City Hall, 202 C St. Downtown. The commission is still scheduled to vote on a final plan on Aug. 25, that would put into place nine new City Council districts effective for the next 10 years. The final plan requires five aye votes out of the seven-member Commission. The most recent map under consideration is the “August 18 Plan,” available for review online (sandiego.gov/redistricting/pdf/110818agenda.pdf). Public comment is accepted at all Redistricting Commission meetings. Copies of the Redistricting Plan will be available.
Record Real Estate Class Enrollment
Despite the downturn in the real estate market, the University of San Diego’s Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate has enrolled its largest Master of Science in Real Estate class to date for the 2011-2012 academic year. Students in the incoming, do-month class kick off their academic year today with a one-week boot camp that covers the fundamentals of real estate and other essential career topics, such as presentation skills, business writing and career mapping. The incoming class is comprised of 27 students: 17 full-time and 10 part-time. A record number of female students are enrolled, as well as five international students from South Korea, Australia, Guatemala, Mexico and China. Two of the incoming students are active-duty military, one of whom is a SEAL qualification training officer in the Navy. The youngest student in the class is 22; the oldest is 48.
Employment Report
Employment declined by 6,500 jobs over the month, but gained 20,100 jobs over the year
The unemployment rate in San Diego County was 10.5 percent in July, up from a revised 10.4 percent in June but below the year-ago estimate of 10.9 percent, the state Employment Development Department reported. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 12.4 percent for California and 9.3 percent for the nation during the same period.
Between June 2011 and July:
Total nonfarm employment decreased from 1,246,200 to 1,240,200, a decline of 6,000 jobs. Agricultural employment lost 500 jobs, or 4.9 percent.
• Government posted the greatest month-over decline, down 9,300 jobs. Job losses in local government (down 11,200), primarily from local government education (down 9,100), were offset by employment gains in state government (up 1,600) and federal government (up 300).
• Three other nonfarm industries also lost jobs over the month: educational and health services (down 1,300); other services (down 900); and manufacturing (down 700).
• Four other sectors added jobs over the month, but the most notable came from professional and business services (up 2,500); leisure and hospitality (up 2,300); and construction (up 1,100).
Between July 2010 and July 2011:
Total nonfarm employment gained 20,100 jobs, or 1.7 percent. Agricultural employment reported no change in employment levels over the year.
• Professional and business services posted the greatest year-over gain, adding 7,700 jobs. Job growth in professional, scientific, and technical services (up 4,000) and administrative and support and waste services (up 3,900) were offset by job losses in management of companies and enterprises (down 200).
• Five other sectors also recorded employment growth over the year: educational and health services (up 6,900); leisure and hospitality (up 5,400); trade, transportation, and utilities (up 1,900); financial activities (up 1,400); and government (up 400).
• Four other sectors reported year-over job losses, but the most significant came from construction (down 1,700) and other services (down 1,400).
