BIO International to Return to San Diego

The BIO International Convention, an event that typically attracts more than 15,000 industry leaders from 48 states and 60 countries, will return to San Diego in 2014 (June 24-27). “San Diego has hosted several of our most successful BIO International Conventions to date and we are thrilled to bring the world’s largest gathering of the biotech industry back to ‘America’s Finest City’ in 2014,” said Jim Greenwood, president and CEO of BIO, producer of the BIO International Convention. “Our convention draws a global focus to the San Diego region’s biotech industry, helping attract continued biotech investment and economic development.” During the 2008 convention in San Diego, more than 20,000 attendees spent about $35.3 million in the region’s hotels, restaurants, and retail businesses, amounting to over $84.8 million impact on the region, according to the San Diego Convention Center Corp. In 2014, the convention is expected to bring a similar financial benefit.

USS Pinckney Honored

Sailors aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Pinckney earned the USS Arizona Memorial Trophy on July 11 in San Diego. The biannual award is presented to the ship regarded as the most combat-ready ship in the surface force. Pinckney demonstrated the greatest combat readiness in strike warfare, surface fire support and anti-surface warfare during the 2009 and 2010 calendar year competitive cycle. “Selection for this coveted award reflects the impressive technical expertise and professionalism exhibited by USS Pinckney’s crew over the past two years,” said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead. “Totally dedicated to the highest level of combat systems operational readiness and warfighting proficiency, they performed brilliantly in exercises as well as real world anti-submarine warfare and strike missions spanning the 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleets areas of responsibility.” Pinckney is currently gearing up for a seven-month deployment with the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis as part of Carrier Strike Group 3.

NAWBO Installs New Board

Christine McDannell of Social Starfish Inc. has been installed as the 2011-2012 president of the San Diego chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). First Republic Bank Appoints Relationship Manager

First Republic Bank has named NGA Nguyen as relationship manager in San Diego. Nguyen has more than 30 years of financial services experience. She will serve individuals, families, businesses and foundations and provide banking, investment management, trust, brokerage and real estate lending services. Nguyen works at First Republic’s office at 12626 High Bluff Drive in San Diego. Prior to joining First Republic, Nguyen worked for Comerica Bank in San Diego, most recently as vice president in wealth management and private banking. Prior to that, Nguyen worked for Wells Fargo and NationsBank. Nguyen earned a bachelor’s degree  from Lycee Marie Curie.

Construction Begins on Math and Science Building

McCarthy Building Companies Inc. has begun construction on the new 180,000-square-foot, four-story Math and Science Building at San Diego Mesa College. The new $92 million instructional building is being funded by the $1.555 billion Propositions S and N construction bond program, which is providing for new teaching and learning facilities, major renovations and campus infrastructure projects at Mesa, City and Miramar colleges, and six continuing education campuses. Completion is slated for March 2013. The Math and Science Building was designed by Architects | Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker. It will house four floors of classrooms, laboratory space and offices for the departments of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physical sciences. Several faculty/student interaction areas have been incorporated into the building’s design.

Mike Erwin Joins Colliers International

Mike Erwin has joined Colliers International’s brokerage office in Carlsbad as a senior vice president. Formerly a top producer at Cassidy Turley/BRE Commercial for 12 years, Erwin will work on an array of real estate services, including investment sales and acquisitions, build-to-suit transactions, and landlord and tenant leasing. He received his graduate and undergraduate degrees from San Diego State University.  Erwin served at the U. S. Treasury Department as a bank regulator for the Comptroller of the Currency from 1992 to 1998. He later joined Grubb&Ellis/BRE Commercial (now Cassidy Turley/BRE Commercial).
