KMA Designs Enclosure for Nuclear Threat Scanning System
KMA Architecture & Engineering is preparing designs for a new enclosure that will house a system that detects nuclear and radiological threat materials that are transported in shipping containers. The nuclear scanning technology was developed by Decision Sciences International Corp., a research and design company based in Poway. The Decision Sciences’ scanning technology will be installed and piloted at select domestic and international ports. If successful, it is likely that additional systems will be installed in shipping ports all over the world. According to Rich Guerena, project architect at KMA, the enclosure will be 3,100 square feet. The scanners will be enclosed and insulated and will be able to identify shielded and unshielded nuclear and radiological threats.The firm will be able to adapt the structure for each specific site at various ports around the world. The KMA team includes Guerena and Robb Walker. Other services are provided by: Mike Hayes at Burkett & Wong, as the structural engineer; Louis Abbott at Abbott Engineering as the mechanical engineer; J. Lopex at Lopez Engineering as the electrical engineer; and Steven Yagade at Yagade Consulting for specifications.
Mama’s Kitchen is Getting a New Home

Mama’s Kitchen is moving out of a basement and into new, larger quarters at 3960 Home Ave. in Fairmount Park. The new location officially opens for business on Monday, Aug. 29, but there will be no disruption of meal preparation or delivery service. The agency delivers healthy meals at no cost to men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS or cancer.
The nonprofit organization has been working out of a leased church basement for the past 17 years — a 5,500-square-foot space where meals are prepared and packaged and where the staff maintains offices and meeting space. But the church landlord declined to renew the lease after deciding to sell the property. The agency’s board approved a plan to purchase and renovate the building on Home Avenue, an 11,000-square-foot, two-story facility that will include an industrial-sized commercial kitchen, more work space for staff and volunteers, conference and classroom space to accommodate community meetings, orientations, training and educationprograms.
Mama’s Pantry, another service provided by Mama’s Kitchen, also will move into the Home Avenue building from its current location in North Park. The service gives clients the opportunity to shop for their own food items once a month. The move will allow Mama’s Pantry to offer perishable food items such as fruits and vegetables as well as non-perishable products such as cereals, pastas and canned goods.
“Mama Kitchen’s new facility represents our commitment to sustain and grow our mission so that over the coming decades we can serve many thousands of lives,” said Alberto Cortés, executive director.
The general contractor for the building renovation is Back’s Contruction. Hurkes Harris Design Associates Inc. is the architect. Project management is by Hughes Marino.
ConVis to Move to Symphony Towers
The San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau is moving its headquarters to the Irvine Company’s Symphony Towers in Downtown, leasing 20,000 square feet in the building. The move is set for this month. ConVis has been leasing a 14,000-square-foot retail building in Little Italy for the past five years. “Symphony Towers is maintained and run as a first-class building,” said Joe Terzi, president and CEO of ConVis. “We do bring in and entertain people to get them to hold meetings here, so having the University Club is a great way to showcase San Diego County as a premier destination.”
Lee & Associates Names Senior Vice Presidents
Lee & Associates has named Tim Moore and Glenn Stokoe senior vice presidents of its Carlsbad office. With over 26 years of experience in commercial real estate, Moore specializes in office, industrial and retail sales and leasing, as well as build-to-suit, land sales and investments. Prior to joining Lee, he worked for Coldwell Banker Commercial, GVA IPC, Grubb & Ellis and Pacific Southwest Realty. Stokoe specializes in industrial and R&D properties and assists business owners, developers and investors acquire, sell and lease properties throughout North San Diego County. Before joining Lee, Stokoe was a vice president with Coldwell Banker Commercial. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in general education and a minor in business management from San Diego State University. Stokoe holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing/finance from Utah State University.
Museum of Art Offers Docent Training Program
The San Diego Museum of Art is looking for individuals interested in attending its docent training program, a two-year continuous program with entrance periods in September and January. Classes meet twice a week from September through May. The course covers a broad history of art, while focusing on works of art in the museum’s permanent collection. In addition, the training curriculum emphasizes a study of techniques and strategies for touring adults, children, and individuals with special needs. To prepare for participation in museum outreach programs, docents-in-training learn to give PowerPoint presentations. The course includes lectures by docents, museum staff, curators and local scholars as well as field-trips to related regional exhibitions. The next two-year training program begin Sept. 7. Classes are held at The San Diego Museum of Art on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 to to 4 p.m. Upon completion, new docents contribute a minimum of eight touring hours monthly. Swinerton Inc. Purchases Industrial Property
Swinerton Inc., a family of construction companies, has purchased a 24,000-square-foot industrial property, located at 16798 West Bernardo Drive in San Diego, for $2.6 million. Voit Real Estate Services represented the seller, West Bernardo Office Partners LLC, and the buyer in the transaction.
