Public to Speak on Preliminary Redistricting Plan
The San Diego Redistricting Commission will hear public testimony on the preliminary redistricting plan that it approved earlier this month at its next meeting Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Joan B. Kroc Center at 6845 University Ave., San Diego. The commission is to adopt a final redistricting plan in late August, which will be used in next year’s city elections. Next year’s primary election will be held on June 5 and the general election is set for Nov. 6. City Council seats up for election will be in Districts 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. Voters citywide also will cast ballots for mayor and city attorney.
Advanced Sommelier to Teach SDSU Wine Course
Lisa Redwine, who has earned the status of an advanced sommelier — the second-highest distinction possible by the Court of Sommeliers — will teach the Exploring Wine course that begins the fall semester in the professional certificate in the Business of Wine program through San Diego State’s College of Extended Studies. The course will be offered on Tuesdays between Aug. 16 and Sept. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. Redwine is only the second woman in San Diego County to become an advanced sommelier. She was promoted earlier this year to food and beverage manager for The Marine Room and the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Redwine was among 10 of the 53 applicants in Aspen, Colo., who passed the advanced sommelier last October by the Court of Sommeliers, an organization that accredits wine experts throughout the world. Exploring Wine will take students on a journey around the world of wine. Topics covered include: history, grape varietals, viticulture, language and labeling, and tastings, as well as guest speakers from the wine industry who offer their expertise.
“Students will learn so much,” Redwine said. “They will understand a label’s language and how to read a wine label. So, when they see Chablis‚ they understand that’s Chardonnay. When they see a German wine label and they see the wordŒtruken‚ they will know that means dry.” Students must be 21 years of age to register for this program. Phil Rush Takes President and COO Position at Brehm Residential
Real estate veteran Phil L. Rush has been named president and chief operating officer of Brehm Residential, Diego-based homebuilding and community development company. A 30-year veteran of the homebuilding industry, Rush most recently served as president of Carlsbad-based RPR Realty Advisors Inc. where he provided consulting services to both private and institutional investment fund clients. During his career as a senior executive, Rush has represented institutional investors including CalPERS, The Prudential Insurance Company of America, and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette in the acquisition, development, and management of residential projects totaling over 30,000 homes and lots in major metropolitan markets throughout the United States. Rush has served as a past member of the California Housing and Community Development Loan Committee, the San Diego Mid-City General Plan Task Force, and as a board member for several large community associations. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Riverside and completed post-graduate work in real estate development at UCSD.
Pacific Ridge School Names Dean of Faculty
Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad has promoted Jennifer Bjornstad to dean of faculty. Bjornstad is a founding faculty member and mathematics teacher at the nonprofit, independent school and has served as the school’s ninth and tenth grade academic dean. Bjornstad will now oversee school-wide academics, including the creation of academic schedules and management of academic funds, as well as the professional development and growth of faculty. Before joining Pacific Ridge School in 2007, Bjornstad taught algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus and served as a staff collaboration coordinator for the San Dieguito Union High School District.
Mike Erwin Joins Colliers International
Mike Erwin has joined Colliers International’s brokerage office in Carlsbad as a senior vice president. Erwin previously was a member of the board at Cassidy Turley/BRE Commercial. Erwin received his graduate and undergraduate degrees from San Diego State University in finance and economics. He served at the U.S. Treasury Department as a bank regulator for the Comptroller of the Currency from 1992 to 1998. Erwin later joined Grubb&Ellis/BRE Commercial (now Cassidy Turley/BRE Commercial) and earned Rookie of the Year with the highest rookie production in the company’s history.
Longtime Brokers Rejoin the Douglas Wilson Cos.
Veteran real estate brokers Thomas Olson and Alan Scott have rejoined the Douglas Wilson Cos. Both formerly were with Coldwell Banker Commercial Almar Real Estate. Olson and Scott last worked at the Douglas Wilson Cos. in the late 1990s and handled such projects as the $85 million sale of the China Basin Landing office complex in San Francisco; the $60 million sale of the Super Shops portfolio, a portfolio in bankruptcy consisting of 77 freestanding retail stores located in 27 states; and the $32 million sale of the Flower Hill Mall in Del Mar. While at Coldwell Banker Commercial, they exclusively handled the high-profile $43 million sale of the leasehold interest in bankruptcy of the Queen Mary ocean liner and surrounding property in Long Beach as well as the $84.5 million sale of the Villages of La Mesa, a 384-unit luxury apartment complex.
Hughes Marino Adds Associate and Assistant General Counsel
JP Roach has been hired by Hughes Marino as an associate and assistant general counsel. Previously, Roach worked as a law clerk and later as an attorney at several of San Diego’s litigation firms. He is a member of the State Bar of California, the San Diego County Bar Association, the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego and is admitted to practice before the United States District Court, Southern District of California. Roach graduated from law school in San Diego with a dual JD/MBA degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law and Point Loma Nazarene University. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara with a bachelor’s degree in business economics.

Susan Schreyer is New Chief Development Officer for Girl Scouts
Susan McNeil Schreyer has been named chief development officer of Girl Scouts San Diego. Leading the fundraising campaign during Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary year will be one of her initial responsibilities. Schreyer began her career in Washington, D.C., conducting campaign seminars throughout the United States. She later served locally elected officials, including Mayor Susan Golding, Councilwoman Judy McCarty and county Supervisor Ron Roberts. She also played key roles in passing two local initiatives, Proposition A (San Diego Convention Center expansion) and Proposition MM (Repair Our Neighborhood Schools). She directed San Diego READS, a partnership between San Diego City Schools and the San Diego Union-Tribune. Schreyer has served on the boards of the Downtown YMCA; UCSD Alumni Association; and the San Diego chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. She earned a bachelor’s degree from UCSD and a master’s degree San Diego State University.
