June Jobs Report:
Employment Up 6,500 Over the Month; Up 16,300 Over Year
The unemployment rate in the San Diego County was 10.4 percent in June, up from a revised 9.6 percent in May and below the year-ago estimate of 10.5 percent, according to the state Employment Development Department.
This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 12.1 percent for California and 9.3 percent for the nation during the same period.
Between May 2011 and June 2011:
Total nonfarm employment increased from 1,240,500 to 1,247,200, a gain of 6,700 jobs. Agricultural employment declined by 200 jobs, or 1.9 percent.
• Leisure and hospitality posted the greatest month-over gain, adding 2,400 jobs. Arts, entertainment, and recreation and accommodation and food services added 1,200 jobs each.
• Seven other sectors also added jobs over the month, but the most significant gains came from other services (up 2,000) and educational and health services (up 1,000).
• Two industries reported job losses over the month; construction (down 300) and trade, transportation, and utilities (down 200).
Between June 2010 and June 2011:
Total nonfarm employment increased by 16,300 jobs, or 1.3 percent. Agricultural employment reported no change in employment levels over the month.
• Professional and business services recorded the greatest year-over gain, adding 6,700 jobs. Administrative and support and waste services (up 3,600) accounted for most of the gain, followed by an increase in professional, scientific, and technical services (up 3,000). Management of companies and enterprises added 100 jobs.
• Five other sectors also reported employment growth over the year: educational and health services (up 6,400); leisure and hospitality (up 5,100); trade, transportation, and utilities (up 1,600); financial activities (up 1,300); and other services (up 700).
• Four other nonfarm sectors posted year-over job losses, but the most notable came from government (down 2,200) and construction (down 2,700).
Padres Pay Tribute to Tony Hawk Foundation
The San Diego Padres will hold a Tony Hawk Foundation Night at Petco Park on Aug. 19, a tribute to the professional skateboarder and the foundation that promotes quality public skateparks in the U.S. Hawk will throuw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game with the Florida Marlins, which begins at 7:05 p.m. A limited edition Tony Hawk bobblehead doll will go to the persons who purchase the first 5,000 tickets to the game through a special offer being made by the foundation (www.padres.com/tony hawk). Tickets through this offer sell for as low as $15.50. Some of the ticket proceeds will benefit the foundation. The foundation was established in 2002 and has since awarded more than $3.8 million to 481 communities.
Ten Trustees Join UCSD Foundation Board
Ten new trustees will join the board of the UCSD Foundation, the organization that raises and manages charitable gifts for the university. The board oversees the management of $600 million in charitable assets, including $375 million in endowment. The new trustees, one of the largest groups to join the board at one time, represent alumni, supporters and friends of the university:
Sheldon Engelhorn, a 1972 UCSD alumnus and a longtime supporter of the campus, especially with regard to scholarships. Engelhorn has served the university in a variety of capacities, including as a member and president of the UCSD Alumni Board of Directors.Phyllis Epstein is a philanthropist and community leader. Among her many activities at UCSD, she is an active supporter of ArtPower!, serves on the Advisory Board of the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies and is a member of UCSD’s Town and Gown.

Donald W. Grimm currently serves on the board of several biotech companies, including Life Technologies. He is a director of Hamilton BioVentures and was previously CEO of Hybritech, an early San Diego biotech company. He is also the new chair of the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center Advisory Board.
Jeffrey Krinsk is co-founder and partner at the law firm Finkelstein & Krinsk LLP. In addition to supporting UCSD’s marine sciences, Krinsk is involved in a number of other charitable and political organizations.
Robert McNeely is the former executive vice president and manager for corporate social responsibility at Union Bank of California. He has served with numerous San Diego organizations, including the Center City Development Corp. and the President’s Community Council at Point Loma Nazarene University.
Ann Reed is a former accountant with Deloitte Haskins & Sells in Denver, Colo. She is the parent of two UCSD alumni and one current UCSD undergraduate, with a son-in-law also attending the university. She has supported many areas of the campus, including music and the arts.
Rudolph Rehm serves as finance partner at DCM, a global venture capital firm based in Menlo Park with offices in Beijing and Tokyo. He has been an active volunteer in the San Diego community, and most recently served as the chair of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center Advisory Board.
Drew Senyei is the managing director of Enterprise Partners Venture Capital. A medical professional and entrepreneur, Senyei is a devoted supporter of the health sciences at UCSD.
Chris Weil is the chair of Christopher Weil & Company Inc., a financial services firm. His philanthropic endeavors range from supporting The Preuss School UCSD and the Mainly Mozart Festival to establishing the Patricia and Christopher Weil Family Foundation.
David Winkler is the CEO and co-founder of the Del Mar Partnership Inc. A supporter of diabetes research, he currently serves as the chair of the UCSD Pediatric Diabetes Research Center Leadership Council.
