Redistricting Commissioner is San Diego Resident
The San Diego Registrar of Voters ruled Wednesday that Redistricting Commissioner Carlos Marquez, whose residency was challenged by local GOP two weeks ago, is a registered voter in the city of San Diego, according to a report by San Diego News Room. Prompted by the Republican Party of San Diego County and redistricting commission chair Anisha Dalal to investigate the claims, the City Attorney’s office referred the question of Marquez’s permanent residence to Registrar Deborah Seiler. The Registrar determined Marquez is properly registered to vote at the Park Boulevard address they have on file. The commissioner’s residency was questioned after footage taken by a private investigator hired by the local Republican Party showed Marquez staying eight of the nine nights that he was followed at an apartment in West Hollywood. The evidence from these reports was submitted to the City Attorney’s office, who studied the information but said the Registrar’s office must make the final decision.
At the weekly redistricting meeting held on May 19, Republican Party Chair Tony Kvaric asked Marquez to resign from the commission for not being a registered voter and expressing partisanship. Marquez did not step down, stating an investigation would determine his residency. Marquez left his job as the director of public affairs at the San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Center in March and started his new job in Los Angeles on April 8. He admits to be staying at the apartment in West Hollywood as he commutes to work, but still considers his San Diego address his place of permanent residence. The next meeting of the San Diego Redistricting Commission will be June 9 at 4 p.m. at the Metro Operations Center in Kearney Mesa.
