Debra Reed Elected CEO of Sempra Energy

Debra Reed

Debra L. Reed, a veteran of the utilities industry, has been elected chief executive officer of Sempra Energy, parent company of San Diego Gass & Electric and four other subsidiaries. Reed, 55, who has been with Sempra Energy companies for 13 years, succeeds Donald E. Felsinger, who will continue as executive chairman until his planned retirement at age 65 in late 2012. Neal E. Schmale, president and chief operating officer of Sempra Energy, will remain in his current role until his planned retirement later this year.

Reed has been executive vice president of Sempra Energy since April 2010. Previously, she was president and chief executive officer of San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas Co., Sempra Energy’s regulated California utilities. She also served as chief operating officer of the two utilities, after being initially appointed president of SDG&E in 2000.

Reed first joined SoCalGas in 1978 as an energy systems engineer.  In 1988, she became the first female officer appointed at the company. Reed serves on the board of directors of Halliburton Co. and Avery Dennison Corp. Previously, she was a board member of the American Gas Association, Genentech and Dominguez Services Corp. She also serves on the board of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. (as chair), as well as on the advisory councils of UCSD’s Jacobs School of Engineering and the Precourt Energy Efficiency Center at Stanford University.  Reed graduated summa cum laude from the University of Southern California with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

Sempra Energy’s five principal subsidiaries are SDG&E, SoCalGas, Sempra Generation, Sempra Pipelines & Storage and Sempra LNG.

Carlsbad Charitable Foundation Awards Green Grants

Legacy Donors June and Knox Williams with Carlsbad Charitable Foundation outgoing Chair Yvonne Finocchiaro.

The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation (CCF) has awarded $54,877 to three programs dedicated to the betterment of Carlsbad’s environment. Carlsbad Kids Go Green was awarded $10,000, the Carlsbad Third Grade Academy for Environmental Stewardship received $29,877 and the Going Green Campaign received $15,000. Each of the programs involve people in activities connected to local nature that promote awareness of personal responsibility for the improvement of the natural environment. The awards were presented June 27 at the Foundation’s fourth annual grants award ceremony at Magee Park. The event also celebrated the creation of a legacy fund by Knox and June Williams that will benefit the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation.

The Carlsbad Kids Go Green is a school-wide recycling and zero waste lunchroom program that creates a culture of environmental awareness and stewardship. Jefferson Elementary and Kelly Elementary Schools will purchase needed recycling hygienic bins, individual utensil dispensers for spoons and forks; napkin bins; a lunch cart with buckets for liquid and food waste and room for tray stacking; compost bins to compost food waste; green, reusable party kits for each classroom; and will launch an educational awareness campaign during the 2011-2012 school year. Funds from CCF would be used to purchase the supplies needed to implement school-wide recycling and best practice zero waste lunch programs at both elementary schools.

The Carlsbad Educational Foundation seeks to enable 867 Carlsbad third graders to participate in the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation’s Academy for Environmental Stewardship in 2011-2012. Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation will deliver the Environmental Stewardship curriculum to all Carlsbad Union School District third graders during on-site visits to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center. Funding from The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation would cover the cost for two visits.

The Going Green Campaign is a one-year campaign that will serve Carlsbad youth, the natural environment and the community at large. Led by the three current Carlsbad Kids for Peace chapters, the student council children at all Carlsbad elementary schools will collectively select one environmental issue they feel inspired to address. The youth will choose this one issue from a ballot of three earth challenges such as perils of plastics, clean water, recycling, etc. The youth will create a comprehensive campaign around the chosen issue. This campaign will consist of education, awareness and action.

“With these grants, students will become more directly involved in what it takes to build and maintain our environment,” said Tom Applegate CCF grants chairman. The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation is an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation.

George Inness’s Italian Landscapes

L’Ariccia (c. 1874), George Inness’s most representative of the three paintings exhibited from his second trip to Italy.

The Timken Museum of Art is now exhibiting the Italian landscapes of American painter George Inness — the first one to examine his two Italian soujourns (1851–52 and 1870–74) and their formative impact on his style and composition. The exhibition, which continues through Sept. 18, was organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. “George Inness in Italy” presents 10 oil paintings and one watercolor surveying Inness’s Italian subjects dating from 1850, just before his trip abroad, to his last in 1879.

‘Twilight on the Campagna’ (c. 1851), George Inness’s first major work completed in Italy.

A highlight of the exhibition is the Timken Museum of Art’s LAriccia (c. 1874) Inness’s most representative of the three paintings exhibited from his second trip to Italy. Inness’s first major work completed in Italy, “Twilight on the Campagna” (c.1851), was a recently conserved painting and has not been on view since 1952.

Inness enjoyed his most productive years during his second stay in Italy. His paintings sold well, both as mementos of Italy for affluent American travelers and as progressive stylistic experiments for leading collectors of American landscape painting. He is widely admired as the pioneer of the aesthetic known as Tonalism, which is distinguished by soft focus and diaphanous layers of paint.
