San Diego Hospitality Industry Examined

Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego

The impact of major hospitality developments in San Diego, including the $570 million acquisition of the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego by Host Hotels & Resorts, will be discussed at the May 11 Hospitality Industry Outlook sponsored by the San Diego chapter of CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member). It will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Doubletree Hotel San Diego in Mission Valley. Speakers include John Campbell, general manager of La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Inc.; Christopher Ford, vice president of asset management with Host Hotels & Resorts Inc.; Kevin Burns, western United States and western Canada regional director of British Airways; and Joe Terzi, president & CEO of San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau. Reo Carr, editor-in-chief of the San Diego Business Journal, will moderate the event.

Also to be discussed is the June 1 re-launch of British Airways’ daily non-stop flight from San Diego to London’s Heathrow International Airport.  The non-stop flights are expected to bring in 40,646 additional hotel room nights annually in San Diego, translating to $5 million in room revenues for the city. Former Redevelopment Officials Face Criminal Charges

Voice of San Diego reported Tuesday that the state of California has filed criminal charges against two former top San Diego redevelopment officials, accusing them of embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds. This was nearly three years after a voiceofsandiego.org investigation uncovered a clandestine bonus scheme, the online news service said. Carolyn Y. Smith and Dante Dayacap face a maximum of seven years and four months in prison if convicted of the charges brought against them by State Attorney General Kamala Harris. They were president and finance director, respectively, at the city’s Southeastern Economic Development Corp., an organization that oversees taxpayer-sponsored development in San Diego’s southeastern neighborhoods.

 Law enforcement officials arrested Dayacap on Tuesday. Smith wasn’t immediately taken into custody.

Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center Completed

DPR Construction has completed construction of the $227 million UCSD Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center, a 127,000-square-foot, 76-patient bed hospital that includes 22 daybeds for pre- and post-procedure care, 12 intensive care beds, 15 intermediate-care beds and 27 acute-care beds. The center also includes an emergency department with four operating rooms designed for heart surgery, 14 smaller treatment rooms and an area for heart-imaging services.

Mingei Museum Gets New Trustee and Marketing Manager

Richard E. Carlson, president and founder of RCS Asset Management in Rancho Santa Fe, has been named a trustee of the Mingei International Museum. The museum also added Jessica Hanson York as its new marketing manager.  Before opening RCS, Carlson was vice president at the New York firm Rockefeller and Co. and general partner of several investment partnerships. His other community service includes the boards of the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation and its investment committee. He chairs the investment committee of Sharp Healthcare and is a board member of the Neurosciences Education Institute in Carlsbad. York served as director of external affairs and marketing at The New Children’s Museum in San Diego from 2007 to 2010 and most recently worked for the city of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture as conference coordinator for the Americans for the Arts Convention that will take place in San Diego this year. She was director of broadcasting and creative services at Chicago’s WTTW, director of creative services at WXXI in Rochester, N.Y., and program publicist for American Public Television in Boston. Continuing members of the board of trustees are Norman Blachford, H. Michael Collins, Roger Cornell, M.D., Carol Y. Dickinson, Maureen Pecht King, Richard Woltman and Terri Peterson Zimdars.

Congresswoman Susan Davis to Meet Constituents

Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego), will meet with 53rd District constituents on May 18 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Normal Heights Community Center, 4649 Hawley Blvd. in Normal Heights. She will discuss federal issues and take questions in the town-hall style public meeting.

Cytori Elects Former Wisconsin Governor to Board

San Diego-based Cytori Therapeutics, manufacturer of medical devices, has elected Tommy G. Thompson, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and former governor of Wisconsin, to its board of directors. The board also elected Lloyd H. Dean as chairman of the board, replacing Ronald D. Henriksen.  “The board additions of Mr. Thompson and previously Mr. Dean — two widely recognized leaders in the US health care industry — will provide Cytori with strong health care expertise in the boardroom,” said Christopher J. Calhoun Cytori’s CEO. “Cytori’s future success in the U.S. will be predicated in part by our ability to navigate an increasingly complex system of regulation, customers and payers.” Thompson held the position as Secretary of the U.S. Department Health and Human Services from 2001 until 2005 and served as the governor of Wisconsin for four terms from 1987 to 2001. He is a partner at the law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld.

Skyline Healthcare Names Chief Clinical Officer

Skylight Healthcare Systems, a provider of interactive patient care systems, has appointed Carla Hilts as chief clinical officer. Hilts has more than 30 years of experience in clinical practice and nursing leadership roles with a variety of hospital organizations, including University Medical Center and Lake Mead Hospital in Las Vegas and Kindred Hospital in San Diego. She was formerly clinical consulting manager at First Consulting Group and most recently executive director and practice leader, clinical consulting services for McKesson Provider Technologies. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a master’s degree from University of St. Francis, in Illinois.

Better Business Bureau Mixer is May 5

Vista Apartments Sold for $7.35 Million

The Mountain View Apartments at 1370 Calle Jules in Vista have been sold for $7.35 million to 46 East 57th Street LLC. The complex has 22 one-bedroom units, 41 two-bedroom units and one studio unit.  Ray Adams of Cassidy Turley BRE Commercial represented the buyer in the transaction. The seller was represented by Allen Chitayat of Hendricks & Partners. Escrow and title services were provided by the Robinson Unit of Chicago Title. The $4.4 million financing was arranged by Ron Hernandez of Union Bank.
