40 Under 40 Awards Deadline

The deadline for submitting nominations for SD METRO’s 40 Under 40 Awards for 2011 is drawing near. You have until May 30 to nominate people you believe are making substantial contributions to their community, their companies, organizations or institutions. You will find a nomination form on the front page of our Website (sandiegometro.com). Fill it out and submit. Editor’s Tip: Describe your nominee in depth. Give plenty of examples of major accomplishments.

Ad Club Holds Digital Marketing Conference

Representatives from Google Inc. , Pandora and Groupon are among the speakers for the San Diego Ad Club’s annual digital marketing conference June 1 at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. The interactive conference is geared towards advertising, Web and social media professionals and will showcase the latest technology and creative executions in the digital space. Kari Allen, vice president of East Coast sales for Groupon recently joined the roster as the conference’s keynote speaker. Other speakers include, John Hilton, channel sales and strategic partnership for Pandora;  Rand Fishkin, chief executive officer and co-founder of SEOmoz.org; and Sam Sebastian, director of local & B2B markets for Google. The conference also will feature 16 seminars and a trade show. DoubleTree Golf Resort Sold

Los Angeles-based Laurus Corp. has completed the acquisition of the DoubleTree Golf Resort in San Diego. The 174-room, hacienda-style resort has an 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course and more than 18,000 square feet of meeting space. SD Golf Resort Partners LLC was formed as an investment vehicle to acquire and reposition the property. A renovation program will be pursued that will include a reconfiguration of the lobby, pool deck upgrades, guest room makeovers and upgrades to the pro shop, spa and restaurants.

Taylor Guitars Opens Service Center in Amsterdam

Taylor Guitars has opened a factory service center in Amsterdam to provide repairs and service to guitar owners throughout Europe. Located inside the company’s headquarters in the Netherlands, the new service center features the same machinery, tools and repair services found at the company’s California factory, along with a staff of repair technicians.

Robert Price Receives SDSU Department Chairmanship

Robert Price, an information and decision systems associate professor in SDSU’s College of Business Administration has been named chair of the college’s Management Information Systems department — formerly known as the Information and Decision Systems. Plice will assume the position as chair on Aug. 22. He replaces Dr. Bruce Reinig who will continue in his position as a professor in the MIS department after that time. Price has been with the department since 2002. He earned his master of science degree in business administration from SDSU, a master of science degree in computer science from the University of Maryland and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine.

Medical Society Foundation Names Executive Director

The San Diego County Mdical Society Foundation board has appointed Barbara Mandel of Del Mar as executive director. Mandel has worked for the past three years for San Diego Grantmakers, facilitating their health-focused funder collaboratives.  Previously, she served as the executive director for Partners for Community Access, a collaboration of North County community clinics and Palomar Pomerado Health, where she developed and operated a health access program.

Visceral Establishes National Headquarters in San Diego

Visceral, a company that specializes in digital media, has opened a new office in San Diego that will serve as company headaquarters, coordinating operations in Columbus, Ohio, and the firm’s recently established satellite location in Seattle. The office is located at 2801 Camino Del Rio South in Mission Valley. The acquisition of Seattle-based Craft Interactive in April expands Visceral’s offerings to include high-level strategic and content capabilities, said Jay Buys, co-founder of the company. Craft partner and lead content strategist Will Sullivan joins Visceral as chief strategist for the company’s national client-base, and head of the Seattle office. “Opening Visceral’s national headquarters is a momentous occasion for our company,” said Buys.  “After five years operating out of Washington, D.C., and primarily in the virtual consulting space, our new San Diego operation coupled with our acquisition of Craft is exemplary of our company’s steady growth.” Visceral was founded in Washington, D.C., in 2006 by Buys and Creative Director Matthew Billingsley. The agency’s digital media services include creative design, corporate branding and identity, Website development, search engine optimization and content management systems.
