40 Under 40 Award Deadline Looms
The deadline for submitting nominations for SD METRO’s 40 Under 40 Awards for 2011 is drawing near. You have until May 30 to nominate people you believe are making substantial contributions to their community, their companies, organizations or institutions. You will find a nomination form on the front page of our Website (sandiegometro.com). Fill it out and submit. Editor’s Tip: Describe your nominee in depth. Give plenty of examples of major accomplishments.
San Diego State Gets A New President
The next president of San Diego State University will be Elliot Hirshman, provost and senior vice president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, a school with a student enrollment of close to 13,000 compared to San Diego State’s more than 35,000 students. The California State University Board of Trustees named Hirshman to the job Wednesday to replace Stephen L. Weber, president since 1996, who will leave in June. Hirshman will start this summer. “This university has unlimited potential and I look forward to working with students, faculty, staff and the community to continue building on its foundation of excellence,” said Hirshman after his selection. “In the selection of Dr. Hirshman, San Diego State is getting a leader that brings both impressive academic credentials and strong administrative experience,” said CSU Trustee William Hauck, chair of the presidential search committee. “Those factors along with his exciting vision for the future of San Diego State make him an excellent choice to steward the university into the next decade.”
Hirshman has been provost and senior vice president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County — the second in command — since 2008 where he was responsible for all aspects of the academic program, including instruction, research, academic support services, as well as enrollment management, admissions, financial aid and Division I intercollegiate athletics. He was chief research officer at George Washington University from 2005 to 2008, chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Colorado at Denver from 2000 to 2002, special assistant to the provost at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1998 to 1999 and an American Council on Education Fellow in the office of the provost and president at Arizona State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from Yale University and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from UCLA.
“It is my privilege to pass on responsibility for serving a great university to President Hirshman,” said Weber. “It will be Elliot’s privilege to bring San Diego State to the next level of excellence.”
County Hosts Workshops to Assist Small Businesses
The county of San Diego will host a workshop on May 19 aimed at helping small businesses become county contractors and suppliers. Workshops also will be held in July, September and November. The May 19 workshop will be at 10 a.m. at the Rancho San Diego Library, 11555 Via Rancho San Diego in El Cajon. “We hope representatives from the region’s diverse small businesses will attend one of these workshops and learn how the county procures goods and services,” saidSupervisors Chairman Bill Horn. “When the county does business with competitive local companies, everyone benefits.” The workshops, hosted by the Department of Purchasing and Contracting, will teach participants how to register with and use BuyNet, the county’s Website for posting business opportunities and interacting with suppliers.The workshop also will cover the county’s bid and proposal terminology, contract rules and regulations and the county’s payment terms. Future workshops — all beginning at 10 a.m. — will be held on these dates: July 26, Encinitas Library, 549 Cornish Drive, Encinitas; Sept. 20, Bonita Library, 4375 Bonita Road, Chula Vista; Nov. 3, County Operations Center, Room 120, 5500 Overland Ave., San Diego.
C.W. Driver Completes Libraries in Fallbrook and Ramona
C.W. Driver has finished the construction of the Fallbrook Library in Fallbrook and the Ramona Library in Ramona — each built to LEED specifications. The Fallbrook Library at 124 South Mission Road is a 19,000-square-foot structure built with several sustainable features including a green roof covered in 3,500 square feet of plants that help to absorb rainwater and insulate the building. It is comprised of modular trays of native and adaptive plants, which can be easily replaced or moved as needed, on top of a waterproof cover. Sustainable elements used during construction included using recycled materials, water-efficient landscaping, and the installation of water and energy-efficient plumbing and lighting fixtures. The library was expanded to almost twice the size of the original building. Amenities include group meeting rooms and study spaces, new computers, public Wi-Fi, automated checkout and a family homework and tutoring center.
Built to LEED Gold certification, the new 21,000-square-foot Ramona Library features Tuscan and Southwestern-style building and is now four-times larger than the original library. C.W. Driver’s work included a photovoltaic system covering 5,000 feet and comprised of two types of panels on the roof set to produce 20 percent of the energy the library needs. Inside the building, patrons can track the library’s energy consumption and production on a digital display. To complement the Tuscan-style theme, native plants and colorful species adaptive to the climate were incorporated to reduce the amount of water, fertilizer and maintenance needed to sustain the landscaping. Amenities include a sanctuary with lounge seating and fireplace, along with a teen area, a children’s space and read-aloud room, community meeting rooms, a homework and tutoring center, and a “Poet’s Patio” for live performances. The library is located at 1275 Main St.
Silvergate Bank Selects Manager for New Escondido Office
Silvergate Bank in La Jolla has hired Jill M. Brierton as vice president and manager of the bank’s new Escondido branch office that will open in mid-June. Brierton has more than 20 years of experience in the banking industry, most recently as vice president and branch manager of the Rancho Bernardo office of U.S. Bank, formerly one of the largest branch offices of San Diego National Bank. She also spent eight years with Washington Mutual Bank, including five years as manager of its Encinitas Financial Center and three years as a senior loan consultant. Brierton also was a branch manager for Bank of America for four years and a relationship manager with Wells Fargo Bank for four years after starting her career with HomeFed Bank.
Cumming Announces Executive Moves
Thomas Noto III has been appointed director of business development at Cumming, an international project and cost consultancy firm in Carmel Mountain, and Alan Plummer has been promoted to the position of director of building information modeling for the company. Noto is responsible foridentifying, tracking and securing new projects in areas such as education, health care, hospitality, gaming, entertainment and sports, mixed-use, corporate office, and LEED certified projects. Noto was one of 2004’s 40 Under 40 Award winners selected by San Diego Metropolitan Magazine (SD METRO) for business success and community contributions. Plummer leads the effort to increase productivity in building design and construction for Cumming’s projects. The company recently moved its offices to Carmel Corporate Plaza’s 8,500-square-foot space in Carmel Mountain.
Mt. Soledad Memorial Day Ceremony is May 30
The annual Mt. Soledad Memorial Day Ceremony will be staged on May 30 from 2 to 3:15 p.m. at the site at 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive South in La Jolla. There will be a special plaque presentation honoring Marine Corps Mayor Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, commander of the VMF-214 Black Sheep Saquadron, Medal of Honor recipient and World War II fighter pilot ace. His son, Greg Boyington of San Diego, will be in attendance. The keynote address will be given by Vice Adm. James Zortman, USN (Ret.), commander of Naval Air Forces (Ret.). National officials and officers of the 75 veterans organization in San Diego County also will be in attendance at the ceremony, which is expected to attract 900 to 1,000 people.
