UCSD and Cal Western End School of Law Talks
Officials from UCSD and California Western School of Law have agreed to curtail exploratory talks about establishing a UCSD School of Law because of the state budget crisis. UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox thanked the committee members for their work. “Their time and valuable work over these past 15 months helped us see the tremendous benefits of this idea for both institutions and our region,” said Fox. “California Western’s strengths made the concept of an affiliation appealing, but the state’s changing fiscal picture makes this opportunity difficult to pursue at this time.” Said Kenneth Greenman, chair of California Western’s board of trustees: “These discussions identified new possibilities for interdisciplinary work which meet the needs of our region’s innovation economy and contribute to economic growth and competitiveness. Given the enormous benefits of this combination, we look forward to a time when formal talks can resume.” The two institutions said they plan to continue current collaborations that include dual and joint degree programs, speaker series and the Community Law Project.
Programs for Small Business Owners
• The U.S. Small Business Administration is inviting small business owners and entrepreneurs to attend an April 11 forum to learn about new federal contracting provisions, how to access capital and other subjects of interest. The forum will be from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Event Center, 1895 Camino Del Rio South, in Mission Valley. • The Valley Economic Development Center will join ACCION San Diego to host the Where’s the Money? Access to Capital Business Expo from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on April 16 at the Doubletree Hotel San Diego in Mission Valley. Mayor Jerry Sanders and Ruben Garcia, San Diego district director for the SBA, will attend. The event is for business owners looking for money for expansion, working capital, inventory, commercial real estate or equipment purchase. The event includes a networking breakfast with opening remarks by Elizabeth Makee, executive director of ACCION San Diego. Panels of experts will be conducting workshops focusing on unconventional financing and what it takes to qualify, strategies for business growth, understanding procurement and contracts, commercial real estate financing options, government loans and incentive options. Sandy Purdon Re-Appointed to Boating and Waterways Panel
Gov. Brown has re-appointed H.P. “Sandy” Purdon, 68, of San Diego, to the Boating and Waterways Commission. He has served on the commission since 2004. Purdon has been the president and chief executive officer of H.P. Purdon & Co., a management firm handling waterfront real estate, marina development, and special events, since 1977. Purdon serves on the board of the San Diego Port Tenants Association and the National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame. He is a life member of the San Diego Oceans Foundation and a member of the U.S. Sailing Association. The position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Purdon is registered decline-to-state.
Wildlife Refuge Faces Budgetary Cutbacks
The San Diego National Wildlife Refuge is one of the “Top Ten California Treasures” identified by The Nature Conservancy as being funded by a federal program that is facing a 90 percent budget cut in the House of Representatives. The Wildlife Refuge and the other areas on the Nature Conservancy list were funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund. “Californians have really benefited from the Land and Water Conservation Fund,” said Mike Sweeney, executive director of the Nature Conservancy’s California chapter. “Many of our prized natural areas around the state, the places we think of as quintessentially Californian, exist because of this program. Although we are all facing tough budget decisions, this program is funded by oil and gas revenue and costs the taxpayers nothing.” The Land and Water Conservation uses money from federal oil and gas leases to create parks, protect wildlife habitat and provide recreational opportunities. In its nearly 50-year history, the program has protected almost seven million acres of parkland and natural areas across the country and more than 37,000 parks and recreation projects in America—including some of California’s most iconic and recognizable places — that are crucial for attracting tourists, funding jobs and generating tax revenue for the state.
