Design for New Horton Plaza Park to be Presented

Centre City Development Corp. is hosting a public open house on April 21 to gather public input on the design for the new Horton Plaza Park adjacent to the Westfield Horton Plaza Shopping Center in Downtown San Diego. Officials said the new Horton Plaza will be the size of an entire city block and will host more than 200 civic events and community celebrations each year. The event will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the former Robinsons-May building at Fourth Avenue and Broadway Downtown. Presentations by a design team from Walker Macy will be made at 5:45 p.m. and at 7 p.m. The project is the result of a partnership between CCDC, working on behalf of the city of San Diego Redevelopment Agency, and Westfield Horton Plaza. The San Diego City Council in January approved a plan to demolish the former Robinsons-May building and to use the property to enlarge the existing Horton Plaza area. According to the plan, the Redevelopment Agency would build the park and it would be maintained by Westfield for the next 25 years. The 1.5-acre park is estimated to cost $8 million to build. The park could produce at lease $310 million in economic activity over the 25 years and provide the city with $37.6 million in new revenues from added property, hotel and sales tax, according to Eri Bruvold, president of the National University System Institute for Policy Research.
