After compiling the information, we will select “20 Women Who Impact San Diego” in our June issue. Send us the name, title and contact information for the individual and a short explanation of why she should be honored. E-mail them to Bob Page at bobpage@sandiegometro.com or Rebeca Page at rebecapage@sandiegometro.com.

Takeda San Diego Gives $250,000 to Center for Children

Takeda San Diego, a drug discovery research company, has made a $250,000 gift to the San Diego Center for Children to support a new behavioral health diagnostic program. Center officials said the program will lead to more individualized diagnoses and treatments for center residents and promote their faster return to healthy and full childhoods. “Given the complexity of the children we help, we believe that more refined and individualized diagnosis and treatment plans are critical to help ensure each child’s success,” said Cheryl Rode, director of clinical operations at the center. “Until now, no funding has been available to complete as comprehensive a psychological diagnostic assessment as we believe is needed for treatment of children at this high level of care. Psychological testing and academic testing are sometimes available through school referrals to the center, but may not be complete or current to address the severity of concerns leading to residential placement.” With the Takeda San Diego funding, the center will develop a state-of-the-art behavioral health diagnostic program allowing every child entering the center’s residential program to benefit from a more comprehensive assessment of their neurocognitive functioning, psychopathology, behavioral patterns, social history and individual strengths, said Rode. The assessments will then fine tune each child’s treatment throughout their stay at the center.

Takeda San Diego designs innovative new medicines to treat cancer, diabetes and arthritis.  Its scientists use leading technologies to take pictures of human proteins involved in disease and then use those pictures to invent new drugs.  The staff also mobilizes frequent company-wide community efforts to help local nonprofit organizations, schools and the environment.

Studio E Architects Wins Sustainable Award

High Tech High Chula Vista has been chosen as one of the top 10 examples of sustainable architecture in the nation by the American Institute of Architects and its Committee on the Environment (COTE). The school was designed by Studio E. Architects to minimize energy demand through compact planning, natural ventilation, daylighting and efficient building design. According to Studio E Architects, the school is the first and only new construction project in the county to win the national award. The building was broken into smaller parts with internal shaded courtyards to provide natural light and ventilation to learning spaces and hallways on the interior. Daylight is the primary lighting source for all circulation and learning areas. By orienting the building to capture the prevailing breezes, break-out spaces between classrooms and the hallways are passively air conditioned, the architectural firm said. A large south-facing roof canopy shades these areas and hosts a photovoltaic array which generates nearly 80 percent of the project’s energy demand. “The organization of the building’s floor plan blurs the line between indoor and outdoor space and offers every opportunity for students and staff to connect to nature,” the firm said. “The design is porous and open in character, while being easily-managed and maintained by teachers and staff.”

The school has been recognized as a model of good design by the United States Green Building Council, The Environmental Protection Agency and The Collaborative for High Performance Schools. The 47,000 square-foot school was completed in 2009 by Bycor General Contractors for  $11.5 million, using a combination of off-site modular and on-site conventional construction in an effort to reduce construction waste, increase construction quality and provide the building on a fast-track schedule.
