Women Rock

SD METRO is asking readers to send us the names of women who have made a big impact on San Diego — in business, government, education, health, the nonprofit industry and the community at large. After compiling the information, we will select “20 Women Who Impact San Diego” in our June issue. Send us the name, title and contact information for the individual and a short explanation of why she should be honored. E-mail them to Bob Page at bobpage@sandiegometro.com or Rebeca Page at rebecapage@sandiegometro.com.

Work Starts on Biomedical Research Facility at UCSD

Biomed Facility rendering

Construction has started on the $105 million Health Science Biomedical Research Facility at UCSD, a planned five-story, 196,000-square-foot building within the School of Medicine campus at the university. McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. is constructing the building, whose function will be similar to the Leichtag Family Foundation for Biomedical Research building that McCarthy finished in 2004. The new facility is expected to be finished in August 2013. “We’re expecting this to be the highest performing and most sustainably designed research lab on the UCSD campus and quite possibly in the country,” said Boone Hellmann, campus architect who heads the design and construction office. The research facility, designed by ZGF Architects, will include wet labs, open lab space, lab support and administrative offices on five stories above ground, with core lab space and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in the basement. Environmental features will include computer-controlled exterior solar shading systems and the reuse of water for landscape irrigation.

James Gillie, senior director of construction services for UCSD is supervising the construction. Pnina Goldbert is overall project manager. Subcontractors include KPFF of Portland and San Diego, IBE Consulting Engineers of Sherman Oaks, Integrated Engineering Consultants of Los Angeles, Spurlock Poirier of San Diego and RFD, also of San Diego.
