Energy Tech Acceleration Program Launched
A grant program aimed at speeding the advance of clean energy innovation and commercialization has been launched by the U.S. Department of Energy with the support of the von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism and Technology Advancement at the UCSD Jacobs
School of Engineering, CONNECT, CleanTECH San Diego, San Diego State and the Rady School of Management. The San Diego Renewable Energy Technology Acceleration Program is designed to accelerate clean energy innovation and the commercialization of new renewable energy technologies developed in universities and research institutes throughout San Diego County.
The program will award selected science and engineering graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with the von Liebig Fellowship, a $45,000 grant for uses “such as personnel and tuition reimbursement toward the advancement of prototype development and testing, conducting proof-of-concept students and market research,” according to the Jacobs School of Engineering. Grant recipients will work with MBA students from San Diego State and the Rady School of Management throughout the year. For more, visit connect.org.
Local Mental Illness Group Receives Honors
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in San Diego has been selected to receive the “Outstanding Local Affiliate” award at the July 9 NAMI National convention in Chicago for its support, education and advocacy services that it offers to San Diegans. The local chapter was recognized for the number of support groups education classes, community outreach activities, seminars and monthly education and advocacy meetings that it offers. The chapter’s “Friends in the Lobby” program, which offers NAMI information and support to those visiting loved ones in hospital psychiatric units, was cited as an example of reaching out to people in need. The chapter also was cited for its participation in the NAMIWalks program, which will be held April 16 in Balboa Park.
Jewish Community Foundation Adds Controller
Eli Landau has been hired as controller of the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego and the organization has expanded the role of Amy Scher as the new Young Funders program manager. Landau is a corporate controller with 10 years of professional experience in public and private sectors. He previously was controller at American Commercial Equities LLC and has also held positions at the American Golf Corp. and Deloitte and Touche. Landau holds a bachelor’s degree from UCLA. Scher is manager of philanthropy at the foundation, overseeing programming and philanthropic projects. She has held positions with the student organization Hillel and the Agency for Jewish Education. She holds a master’s degree from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from Barnard College.
Bailey Gardiner Adds to Staff and Promotes Lizzie Younkin
Bailey Gardiner has named Kirsten Winter as advertising account supervisor and hired former intern Alex Tuthill as account coordinator. The agency also promoted Lizzie Younkin to PR senior account executive. Winter previously was with Castle Advertising for seven years and has experience in a variety of industries including real estate, hospitality and education. Tuthill graduated with an advertising degree from Ball State University. Younkin has been with the agency for four years and oversees strategy on numerous accounts.

The Business & Entrepreneur Center and the Small Business Development Center at MiraCosta College will offer free upcoming workshops to help businesses succeed. The workshops will be held at Vista City Hall, 200 Civic Center Drive, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the following dates:
