Mayor Acts to Protect City Projects

Mayor Jerry Sanders said he would ask the City Council next Monday to approve a list of projects that should be protected if Gov. Brown’s proposal to eliminate redevelopment agencies is successful. The list includes nearly $340 million to build or improve parks and libraries, $88 million for four new fire stations, more than $1.7 billion for affordable housing and $1 billion on public infrastucture like sidewalks and streets. “These are projects that citizens throughout San Diego planned for their communities — projects that make their neighborhoods safer, creates jobs and promotes economic vitality,” said Sanders… “Eliminating redevelopment will harm our neighborhoods and extinguish the flame of economic-development by depriving it of the fuel.  This will have serious, long-term consequences for our local economy and our job market.”

MiresBall Finds Larger Space in Little Italy

Branding firm MiresBall is moving into a building that used to store coffins. Not an omen, considering the company has seen its revenue grow by 31 percent and full-time staff by more than 20 percent over the past three years. The firm has relinquished its old Little Italy offices to new offices at 2605 State St. — still in Little Italy. The new headquarters offers twice the floor space as the old office on Kettner Boulevard and was remodeled to suit the firm’s desire for bright, airy and dynamic space. It includes reclaimed barnwood, hot rolled steel and other unusual materials. “We wanted a space that will not only accommodate our growth, but will provide a creative setting that encourages the type of collaboration and principal-led involvement that’s made our work so successful,” said John Ball, principal and creative director. “Little Italy has been a great home for us for 20 years and it was important to stay close to our roots,” said Scott Mires, who founded the agency in 1986. “We look forward to maintaining long-time relationships with local businesses and design partners while building on our success in this exciting new time for our firm.”
