Sharp Rees-Stealy will break ground on Feb. 22 on a new Downtown medical center to replace the 88-year-old building on Fourth Avenue. Sharp officials said it will be the first LEED Gold-certified “green” medical building in San Diego. The three-story building will have 66,365 square feet of medical office space, 300 parking spaces and a history gallery. The first floor will house a pharmacy, optical shop and physical therapy department. Urgent care, occupational medicine and radiology will be on the second floor. The third floor will be devoted to internal medicine, family medicine and specialty practices. Sharp officials anticipate a summer 2012 opening.
Secretary of Navy Comes to San Diego
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will deliver a talk on “America’s Navy & the Modern World” on Feb. 11 as part of the San Diego Good Government Series presented by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and The City Club. The program and reception will be at 6 p.m. in the Pacific Ballroom of the Holiday Inn on the Bay, 1355 North Harbor Drive in Downtown San Diego. Chamber members are $25 and nonmembers are $35. Before joining the Obama administration, Mabus served in a variety of positions in government and the private sector. He was elected governor of Mississippi in 1988 and was credited with passing the Better Education for Success Tomorrow program, one of the most comprehensive education reform programs in the U.S. He was appointed ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudia Arabia for the Clinton administration in 1994. Mabus was chairman and CEO of Foamex, a large manufacturing company. Before his election as governor, he was elected state auditor of Mississippi and served as a surface warfare officer in the Navy aboard the cruiser USS Little Rock.
Erin Cassidy joins sales and marketing staff
Erin Cassidy
Erin Cassidy, a recent graduate of the University of California Berkeley, has joined the sales and marketing staff of the North Park News, Kensington News and West Coast Craftsman. Cassidy is a native Californian, born and raised in Sacramento. She graduated with honors in history from UC Berkeley. Her historical focus and thesis topic was urban history, the growth of cities in the United States and personal reactions to this landscape. Throughout her four years in Berkeley, Erin worked for the Events Department at the International House, a nonprofit organization with close ties to the university. In this role, Erin monitored and planned internationally themed programs, guided and scheduled set-up teams and helped manage the office. While at Berkeley, Erin was a summer intern as a legislative assistant for the University of California Office of Federal Governmental Affairs in Washington, D.C. She was an active member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, holding multiple leadership positions. In San Diego, Erin has worked on a variety of projects and events with The Monger Company, a strategic advocacy firm. She has also garnered small business experience from organizing the advertising campaigns for Coronado Floor and Window.
Rep. Susan Davis Moves Office to Adams Avenue
Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) has opened her new community congressional office at 2700 Adams Ave., Suite 102, between 30th and Texas streets. The offices previously were in Normal Heights.
Ryan Harris Opens Downtown Law Office
North County trial lawyer Ryan Harris has opened a new Downtown San Diego office on the 15th floor of 525 B St. The firm specializes in personal injury cases. Harris said the firm has successfully litigated more than 1,500 cases for clients across the state. To date, it has tried cases resulting in jury verdicts ranging from $30,000 to $13.3 million, he said. Harris lawyers represent individuals injured in auto, motorcycle, bicycle and truck accidents as well as victims of dog attacks, slip and fall accidents, defective products, and all other accidents caused by the negligence of others.
Grant Money to Aid San Diego and Imperial County Small Businesses
Small businesses in San Diego and Imperial counties will have greater access to critical resources to help them start or grow their businesses and create jobs, thanks to a $462,854 grant to SBA’s San Diego and Imperial Small Business Development Center Regional Network. The funding was provided under a provision of the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 signed by the President Obama last September, which provided $50 million in grants to SBA’s Small Business Development Centers across the country to support job creation and retention within the small business community by providing in-depth business counseling and advice to entrepreneurs and small business owners.
The one-time only grant will allow the San Diego and Imperial Small Business Development Center Regional Network to:
• Deploy “survive and thrive” teams to provide financial and business turnaround counseling to support job retention and growth for at-risk businesses.
• Expand export assistance and training services of the SBDC’s International Trade Center to small businesses throughout San Diego and Imperial counties.
• Offer business advice in such growth industries as clean energy, food processing, apparel and sporting goods, and maritime services for both domestic and export markets;
• Assist small business owners to adopt broadband and energy efficiency technologies that lower costs and increase operational efficiency.
• Help entrepreneurs to access research and product development resources for military and defense industry innovations.
