Naval Bases Take Part in Anti-Terror Exercise

Naval bases in San Diego will take part in a nationwide anti-terrorism and force protection training exercise on Feb. 22-25. Called Exercise Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield, the program is to enhance the training and readiness of Navy security personnel to respond to threats to installations and units. It is held annually. “Measures have been taken to minimize disruptions to normal base and station operations, but there may be times throughout the week when the exercise causes increased traffic around bases or delays in base access,” according to a Navy release. “Area residents may also see increased security activity associated with the exercise.” Naval Medical Center San Diego said beneficiaries may encounter delays at the hospital on Feb. 23. All outpatient visits and elective procedures have been cancelled that day. There also may be delays at particular base clinics on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24. Representatives from the Fleet and Family Support Center, military housing and civilian housing referral services, Navy legal assistance, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and religious services will be located at the Family Assistance Center at Murphy Canyon Chapel on the two days. Military family members needing assistance from such services can avoid potential delays at bases by going to the Family Assistance Center. Patrons can also call (866) 595-7460 to ask about delays and availability of services.

LRAD Corp. Supplies Acoustic Hailing Devices to the Navy

LRAD Corp., manufacturer of acoustic hailing devices, said it has received more than $800,000 in new LRAD systems and services orders from the Navy. The firm has been supplying the systems to the Navy since 2003. “LRAD was originally developed to support protection and exclusion zones around U.S. Navy ships in response to the attack on the USS Cole over 10 years ago,” said Tom Brown, president and CEO of the company. The system gives naval and commercial maritime vessels the capability of determining the intent of unidentified ships that fail to respond to radio calls. LRAD then provides security forces time and distance to react and measure their response. The company also announced an LRAD system was used by the South Korean Navy during its successful rescue of the Samho Jewelry off the coast of Somalia late last month. The South Korean Navy used LRAD to alert the hijacked crew of the rescue operation and broadcast warnings to the pirates that had seized the ship.
