Aldila Golf Corp. Purchases Archery Line

Aldila Golf Corp. of Poway is going into the archery business. It has acquired the assets of Miramar Strategic Ventures LLC — the Victory Archer line of carbon fiber arrows and related archery products. Aldila paid $2.3 million and issued 104,319 shares of unregistered Aldila common stock to Miramar Strategic Ventures in payment for the assets. Aldila designs, manufactures and markets high-performance graphite golf shafts used in golf clubs assembled and marketed by major golf club companies, component distributors and custom clubmakers. Its golf shafts are a leading brand on the PGA Tour. The company lists its total assets at $38 million and worldwide employment at 1,291. Net sales for the third quarter of 2010 were $12.2 million compared to $10.7 million for the same period of 2009.

Asking Prices for Businesses Declines

Small businesses in San Diego are selling for a median asking price of $195,000 — a decline from $199,000 at the end of the fourth quarter in 2009, according to a report by BizBuySell.com. Businesses listed for sale in the fourth quarter of last year had median revenue of $366,500, down from $373,556 at the same time a year ago. The median cash flow, meaning the money that comes out of the business over the course of a year, is $90,000, versus median cash flows of $85,000 last year. According to BizBuySell.com, business owners in the San Diego area will typically ask for, on average, a revenue multiple of .83 (changed from .69 year over year) and a cash flow multiple of 2.94 (changed from 2.92 year over year).

Chris Allen Heads Deloitte & Touche’s San Diego Office

Chris Allen

Chris Allen, partner with Deloitte & Touche LLP, has been named managing parter of the firm’s San Diego office, succeeding Theresa Drew. Drew was San Diego’s managing partner for 10 years and was appointed managing partner of Deloitte’s Carolinas practice. Allen is a 22-year veteran of Deloitte. He is a certified public accountant in California and Florida, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Florida. Allen has professional services experience and knowledge of the aerospace and defense, telecommunications, technology and life sciences industries and has worked with many of Deloitte’s largest multinational clients.

Socione LLC Buys Condo in Sapphire Tower

Socione LLC, an oil distributing company, has purchased a 5,480-square-foot office condominium in Sapphire Tower in Downtown San Diego for $967,500. The company will move into the new space (Suite CU-3), located at 755 West A St., in the spring. The seller, CW San Diego Towers Sapphire LLC, was represented by David Maxwell, Bill Shrader and Corinna Gattasso of Cushman & Wakefield. Socione was represented by James Karlovsky of Coldwell Banker Commercial. Sapphire Tower is a 32-story, mixed-use building with 96 residential condominiums and 8,300 square feet of commercial space over two floors. Two commercial units have been sold and one 1,800 square-foot ground floor unit fronting Kettner remains.

Waterstone Carlsbad Sold for $78.1 Million

Virginia-based AvalonBay Communities Inc. has purchased Waterstone Carlsbad, a community of 450 apartment homes located in Carlsbad, for $78.1 million. Waterstone Carlsbad was completed in two phases from 1985-1986. AvalonBay plans to complete upgrades to the remaining apartments not included in a renovation program under way from 2006-2009.

Lee Burdick Heads California Health Care Coalition

The California Health Care Coalition in San Diego has selected Lee Burdick as its new executive director, succeeding interim director Ken Stuart of the San Diego Electrical Health & Welfare and Pension Trusts. Stuart will continue as chairman of the board. Burdick has nearly 25 years of experience as a lawyer for a variety of regulated industries. In 2009, he was appointed a commissioner of the Unified Port of San Diego.

Breitbard Salute to the Champions Set for Feb. 15

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, NASCAR Sprint Cup series champion Jimmie Johnson and Padres closer Heath Bell will be among local sports professionals and amateurs to receive Star of Year awards at the 65th annual Breitbard Salute to the Champions Feb. 15 at the Town and Country Convention Center in Mission Valley. A total of nine professional and 11 amateur athletes will be honored. At the same time, Paul Lowe, La’Roi Glover, Lincoln Kennedy and John Lynch Jr. will be inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions Hall of Fame.

Rivers, who tossed for a career 4,710 yards and 30 touchdowns, will be joined by his favorite target, Antonio Gates, who also reached a milestone by surpassing 7,000 yards receiving for his career.Bell, who compiled a 6-1 record with 47 saves and a career-low 1.93 ERA, will be feted along with the Padres’ 2010 Player of the Year, Adrian Gonzalez. Johnson captured an unprecedented fifth straight NASCAR Sprint Cup race series title in the final race of the season.Other pros who have earned Star of the Year for 2010 are PGA golfer Charley Hoffman, the NFL’s leading rusher ,Arian Foster, Olympic gold medalist Shaun White and Washington National pitcher Stephen Strasburg.

NCAA tennis champion Bradley Klahn of Stanford, a Poway High graduate, tops the list of amateurs who have been selected Stars of the Year. Collegiate Volleyball Player of the Year Carli Lloyd (Falbrook) of Cal and fellow Final Four All-Tournament pick Juliann Faucette (Westview) of Texas are joined by U.S.A. Water Polo standout Tanya Gandy (Rancho Bernardo).

Three athletes from San Diego State—MWC Football Freshman of the Year Ronnie Hillman, 2010 MWC Basketball Freshman of the Year Kawhi Leonard and MWC Pitcher of the Year Samantha Beasley; three from the University of San Diego—2010 WCC Player of the Year Ali Troost, teammate Amy DeGroot, and outstanding golfer Gunner Wiebe; and Brandon Gregorich, who led UCSD to its second straight NCAA Division II title game, will also be feted.

SDSU Offers Grant Writing Certificate

San Diego State University’s College of Extended Studies is offering a new Professional Certificate in Grant Writing to help new grant writers and others to develop skills necessary to secure funds for their organizations. The certificate program begins with Introduction to Grants and Funding Research on Mondays, Jan. 24-Feb. 14, 5:30-8:30 p.m. The Grant Proposal Development course is Mondays, Feb. 28-March 21, 5:30-8:30 p.m. The fee for each course is $249.
