Majors-Lewis Appointed to S.D. Superior Court Bench
Sharon B. Majors-Lewis of Chula Vista, who has served as the judicial appointments secretary for the governor’s office since 2007, has been appointed to the San Diego Superior Court bench by Gov. Schwarzenegger. Majors-Lewis, 62, worked for the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office as a chief deputy district attorney from 2005 to 2007 and as a deputy district attorney from 1987 to 2005. She was an appellate attorney for Appellate Defenders Inc. and was a sole practitioner from 1986 to 1987. She earned a Juris Doctorate degree from National University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from National University San Diego. Majors-Lewis fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Charles R. Hayes. She is a Republican.
Jaclyn Gerson Joins Gerson Law Firm

Jaclyn Brody Gerson has joined the Gerson Law Firm to focus on commercial real estate finance, real estate and business transactions. Gerson received her law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law and holds a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley. She was previously with DR Horton Inc. in Northern California. Gerson joins Gerson lawyers Jana Beck, Mark M. Chairmont, Gordon Gerson, Shereen L. Rossini and Jeremy Shafer.
Barnhart Balfour Beatty Appoints Vice President
Jamie Awford
Jamie Awford has been appointed vice president of business development for the Southwest region for Barnhart Balfour Beatty. Awford has more than 20 years experience in the construction industry. Prior to joining Barnhart Balfour Beatty, he was vice president and general manager at Turner Construction in San Diego where he led the company’s efforts to secure more than $500 million of work in Southern California. Awford is involved in industry associations including the San Diego chapters of the Associated General Contractors of America and the American Institute of Architects in addition to the Downtown San Diego Partnership. He serves on the board of directors for the San Diego chapters of Habitat for Humanity and the Architecture Construction and Engineering Mentor program.
HemaQuest Adds to Management Team
HemaQuest Pharmaceuticals Inc., a biotechnology company that develops small molecule therapeutics to treat hemoglobin-associated diseases, has appointed three executives to its management team. John P. Longenecker was appointed president, CEO and director. Richard Ghalie was named chief medical officer and Tamara A. Seymour was named chief financial officer. The company also announced that it will establish corporate offices in San Diego while existing offices in Seattle will be maintained. Longenecker most recently served as president, CEO and director of Favrille Inc. and has more than 25 years of executive management experience in the biotechnology industry. Both Ghalie and Seymour worked with Longenecker at Favrille.
Student Director Named for AIA California Council
Lauren Pasion, a student at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD), has been named student director of the American Institute of Architects California Council. Pasion will serve as the liaison between AIA California Council and the AIA student California chapters across the Southern region. Pasion is a fourth-year student at NSAD pursuing a bachelor’s degree in architecture. She was the past president of NSAD’s AIA student chapter where she developed regional AIA conferences in leadership, and architecture and design. She has been on both the president’s and dean’s list for the past four years. In 2010, she was awarded the NSAD Design Excellence Award and the AIA San Diego Distinguished Service Student Mentor Award.
Shapell Homes Purchases Carlsbad Acreage
Beverly Hills-based Shapell Homes has acquired the western portion of the Robertson Ranch in Carlsbad. Located off El Camino Real and Cannon Road, the property has city master plan approval for 680 single-family and multi-family residences together with a neighborhood-serving retail center in a village setting. About half of the property has been set aside for open space and active and passive recreation opportunities. Shapell purchased the acreage from long-standing Carlsbad landowner the Robertson family. The property represents the remaining balance of the community. The original master plan approval was secured in 2006 and the eastern portion of the property is currently under development.
Biomed Realty Trust Pays $51.5 Million for Sorrento Valley Properties
Biomed Realty Trust Inc., a San Diego-based real estate investment trust, has purchased three research and development projects in Sorrento Valley for a total of $51.5 million. The buildings total 300,000 square feet and have R&D space with lab and office build-outs. Collins Development Co. was the seller.
The sale included the 163,872-square-foot Sorrento West for $29.3 million, a nine-building campus on 10.4 acres, and the 35,940-square-foot BC Sorrento for $12.4 million. The third part of the sale was the 30,184-square-foot Sorrento Plaza for $9.8 million, fully leased and rebuilt in 2003. Chad Urie, Bob Prendergast, Lynn LaChapelle and Grant Schoneman of Jones Lang LaSalle represented the seller in the transaction.
Bailey and Cohn Purchase Industrial Building
Bailey and Cohn LLC has purchased an 11,400-square-foot industrial building at 3955 and 3957 Pacific Highway in San Diego for $1,250,000. Baily and Cohn plans to open a motor scooter sales and service facility at the property. It will relocate from its current business in North Park in the first quarter of next year. The freestanding office showroom and warehouse building offers 18-foot clear ceiling height, grade level loading and a new roof. Both the buyer and seller, 3957 Pacific Highway LLC, were represented by Mark Lewkowitz and Tim Mills of Cushman & Wakefield.
City of San Diego to Start Fluoridating Drinking Water
The city of San Diego is scheduled to begin fluoridating drinking water on Dec. 22. All residents in the city of San Diego, as well as residents of the cities of Coronado, Del Mar and Imperial Beach will receive fluoridated water. San Diego will supplement naturally occurring fluoride and imported fluoridated water in drinking water to meet the standards established by the California Department of Public Health. State law requires water agencies with more than 10,000 water service connections (which includes the city of San Diego) fluoridate their drinking water supplies. However, a public water system is exempt from fluoridating until sufficient outside funding is available. Both the California Attorney General and the San Diego City Attorney’s Office determined that when sufficient funding became available, San Diego Municipal Code Section 67.0101, which prohibits the city from fluoridation, would be preempted by state law.
In 2008, the City Council accepted an offer of funding from the First 5 Commission of San Diego County for the purpose of fluoridating the public water supply. The Commission’s offer of up to $3,927,016 is for full funding of the capital costs and up to two years of operating and maintenance expenses necessary to implement fluoridation at each of the city’s three water treatment plants.
Eddie V’s Edgewater Grill to Open in La Jolla
Eddie V’s, an upscale Texas seafood restaurant, will open its first California location in La Jolla in Green Dragon Colony at 1270 Prospect St. Eddie V’s signed a 10-year, $4,747,215 lease for 9,415 square feet in the space previously known as the La Jolla Chart House. “Former Chart House customers will not recognize this facility as it has been completely redesigned into a three-story restaurant that now includes a rooftop patio,” said Bill Shrader of Cushman & Wakefield who, along with Corinna Gattasso, represented the lessor, Allison-Zongker LP. Eddie V’s Edgewater Grill, was represented by John Rigau of Specialty Retail Properties. The restaurant is scheduled to open for business in June 2011.
Cornhuskers and Huskies in Holiday Bowl
The Cornhuskers from the University of Nebraska and the University of Washington Huskies have accepted invitations to play in the 33rd annual Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl at 7 p.m. on Dec. 30 in Qualcomm Stadium. The Holiday Bowl will mark the ninth meeting of the two teams. Nebraska leads the series with a record of 4-3-1. The two most recently squared off Sept. 18 in Seattle when the Huskers topped the Huskies 56-21.
