Del Mar Highlands Town Center to Get Facelift

Rendering of Del Mar Highlands Town Center

The 20-year-old Del Mar Highlands Town Center in Carmel Valley is slated for a major renovation, including the conversion of the UltraStar 8 theater into a luxury boutique movie setting. The movie theater will close down on Jan. 3  and will reopen in conjunction with the grand reopening of the Del Mar Highlands in the summer of 2011. “The movie theater renovation is an important part of the overall re-imagining of the Del Mar Highlands Town Center,” said Elizabeth Schreiber, vice president and general manager for Donahue Schriber, owner and operator of the center. The upgraded theater will offer new perks such reserved seating, which allows movie patrons to reserve specific seats for any showing ahead of time. Also among the theater’s features are eight auditoriums featuring stadium seating with luxury high-back reclining chairs; state-of-the-art digital screens with 3D capability; in-seat food ordering; a cinema café offering an assortment of gourmet movie fare; and online ticketing. Renovation of the center will include an increased variety of dining, shopping and entertainment options, and improved parking, traffic flow and pedestrian experience. The first phase of the renovation was completed last month and January marks the beginning of the final phase, which includes a remodel of the amphitheater that will offer new and improved social gathering spaces.

Schriber said three new restaurants will open at the re-imagined center – Rimel’s Rotisserie, an Asian and Mexican inspired mesquite, wood-fired grill and rotisserie restaurant; The Counter, a 21st century version of a burger joint complete with custom-built burgers; and Carmel Valley Swirls, a healthy frozen yogurt shop. Additional leases are expected to be announced soon.
