National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO) shipyard workers use a barge crane to move the propellers and rudder of the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard. The parts will be trucked across country to a refurbishment facility then returned to the ship. Bonhomme Richard is in dry dock through April. Reno Contracting to Renovate Marriott Marquis & Marina
Reno Contracting will begin a $1.3 million renovation of the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina that will include the remodel of ballrooms, meeting rooms and space within the lobby and the foyer level of the North Tower. The initial work will involve renovation of the elevator lobbies, occurring through Dec. 31. The second phase is planned for April through June of 2011. The renovation was designed by Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates Inc. The contractor said enhanced functionality and ambience, energy efficiency and upgrades of materials are planned as part of the renovation. Lighting is being upgraded to LED as part of the master plan to enhance energy conservation within the existing facilty. The project also includes updating audio visual components including speakers, controllers, panels and cabling to enhance the functionality of the spaces.
Pacific Station Units for Sale in Encinitas
Concordia Homes is providing sales and marketing services for the 47 residential units available for sale at Pacific Station, a $40 million mixed-use development at 687 South Coast Highway 101 in downtown Encinitas. Prices range from the $300,000s to $700,000s for a mix of two-story town homes, two-story lofts and single-story flats ranging from 600 to 2,300 square feet. Pacific Station was developed by John DeWald & Associates in conjunction with Phase 3 Properties Inc. The single-story flats are offered in one- or two-bedroom, one-bath designs ranging from 606 to 970 square feet in size. The two-story townhome floor plans offer 20 different layouts with a choice of two or three bedrooms, two and one-half baths and from 1,068 to 1,355 square feet of space. Most townhomes feature decks on both upper and lower floors. The six two-story loft designs are available in one- and two-bedroom layouts with 1.5 or 2.5 baths and from 809 to 2,295 square feet of space. The Pacific Station project includes 40,000 square feet of retail space and 9,000 square feet of professional office space, all constructed over two floors of underground parking. Retail tenants include a Whole Foods Market, Solace and the Moonlight Lounge restaurant, and unique retail shops. • Victor’s Auto Repair purchased a 4,583-square-foot industrial building and concrete yard at 9070 Jamacha Road in Spring Valley for $380,000. Kerry Schimpf and Ken Ruppert of Cassidy Turley BRE Commercial represented both the seller and the buyer in the transaction.
Experts to Talk on Online Marketing
Jill Addison and Stephanie West, professionals in video production and marketing, respectively, will give a presentation at the Jan. 14 meeting of the National Association of Women Business Owners San Diego (NAWBO). They will address “10 Keys to Transforming Your Online Marketing.” The meeting will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Brandman University, 7460 Mission Valley Road, San Diego. NAWBO members are free. Big Bay Balloon Parade Kicks Off on Thursday
The Port of San Diego’s Big Bay Balloon Parade kicks off Thursday at 10 a.m. in front of the County Administration Building under the theme “Let the Games Begin.” The parade is one of several events leading up to the Holiday Bowl game at Qualcomm Stadium that night at 7 p.m. pitting the University of Washington Huskies against the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. Basketball star Bill Walton is grand marshal of the parade. The Helix High grad, a two-time NBA champion and NBA All-Star, will be in the opening float. Just before the parade starts, more than a thousand runners will compete in the annual Bumble Bee 5k run. The race starts at 9:45 a.m. at the corner of Harbor Drive and Ash Street. It heads south on Harbor Drive behind the San Diego Convention Center, makes a loop through Embarcadero Marina Park North and ends near Tuna Harbor Park and the G Street Mole.
The Amtrak Big Bay Family Festival will take place on the bayside of Harbor Drive between the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal and Anthony’s Restaurant. The festival runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes free activities for the family.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
The life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. at Christ United Presbyterian Church, 3025 Fir St., in San Diego. The program will feature special music by the celebration choir under the direction of Leon Kelley and a youth Readers Theatre rendition of King’s words, presented in “Dr. King, The Prophet.” Community Service Awards will be presented to two local leaders for their work in promoting unity and diversity — Robert L. Matthews, a retired educator of the San Diego City Schools and Community College District, and UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. The celebration is free and open to the public.
