Assemblywoman Toni Atkins Named Majority Whip
Freshman Assemblywoman Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) has been named Majority Whip of the state Assembly by Speaker John Pérez (D-Los Angeles). It’s a key position in the Democratic Caucus leadership. Atkins, a former member of the San Diego City Council, was elected to the 76th Assembly District seat in the November election. The district includes the central and northern San Diego communities of Clairemont, Bay Park, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Point Loma, Tierrasanta, Serra Mesa, Hillcrest, University Heights, North Park, South Park, Linda Vista, Mission Valley, City Heights, Old Town, Normal Heights, Mission Hills and Downtown San Diego. “Assemblymember Atkins prioritizes working families,” said Pérez. “She has been a fierce advocate for jobs, and I look forward to working with her to get California back to work.”
Atkins also was appointed vice chair of the Housing and Community Development Committee; and a member of the Health, Government Organization, Veterans Affairs, and Judiciary Committees.
Little Italy Parking Gets Easier
More parking has become available in Little Italy. A parking lot at India and Juniper streets will remain open every Saturday throughout 2011 so visitors and residents can park their vehicles for two hours free of charge and $2 per hour after that. The Little Italy Association (LIA) instituted the service as part of the Little Italy Parking District. The lot has 44 spaces and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Centre City Development Corp. supported the opening of the lot. “The Parking District is continuing to expand to best utilize existing parking sites and resources and we’re proud to officially open the Little Italy North Parking lot to ease parking frustrations in the neighborhood,” said Steve Gallaso, president of LIA. “We appreciate CCDC’s support and in working with the city to make strides with the opening of Washington Elementary School’s lot on Saturdays and expect the same positive response from the community with this latest development. We’ve just made a dent into the overall Parking District plan and we’re on the right track.”
Port Pavilion to Open Saturday on Broadway Pier
The Port of San Diego opens the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier on Saturday by turning it into a temporary amusement park. A Ferris wheel, giant octopus ride and other carnival rides will be on the pier and open to the public at no charge beginning at 10 a.m. The official dedication of the Port Pavilion will be at 4 p.m. It is a 52,000-square-foot facility that will serve as an auxiliary cruise ship terminal and a public events venue. Saturday’s festivities continue throughout the day and will include musical entertainment by a variety of performers, food, including chocolate-covered bananas, ship tours, a traditional Native American blessing of the Port Pavilion by the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Indians, open house tours, a travel show, maritime exhibits and activities for children, including a shark tank courtesy of the Chula Vista Nature Center. People attending the event are being encouraged to take public transportation. In addition, the Port is providing a free shuttle that will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The shuttle will leave from theSeaport Village Old Town Trolley stop across from the Harbor House Restaurant. There also will be pickups at the Old Town Trolley stops at 500 Kettner Blvd. and Horton Plaza in front of Ambercrombie & Fitch on Broadway Circle. The shuttle runs every 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
World Trade Center S.D. Chairman Named
Bruce W. Hueners, CEO of Palomar Technologies, has been named board chairman of the World Trade Center San Diego (WTCSD). Hueners has been on the board for five years and was previously vice chairman. The WTCSD is a private-public partnership with the city of San Diego, the San Diego Unified Port District and the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. Membership includes a range of companies and organizations involved in world trade. Member organizations include Callaway Golf, FedEx, Goodrich Aerostructures, PULSE, Qualcomm, Quantum Design, San Diego State University CIBER, Sheppard Mullin, Solar Turbines, Sony Electronics, USD Ahlers Center for International Business, the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at UCSD, Wells Fargo International Banking and WD-40.
Free Publish Your Book Workshop
San Diego author Jennifer Coburn will give a free “Publish Your Book” workshop on Jan. 11 where she will share practical steps to getting published, including how to get an agent and how to workshop a manuscript, and describe the publishing process. The workshop will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Benjamin Branch Library at 5188 Zion Ave. (at Waring Road) in the Allied Gardens area. Coburn has published four novels and contributed to four literary anthologies. Her first book, “The Wife of Reilly,” is in development for a feature film.
Scott Alevy Named Chamber President and CEO
Scott Alevy, principal at Trilogy PR Group in La Mesa, has been named president and chief executive officer of the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce. Alevy succeeds former El Cajon Police Chief Cliff Diamond. He has more than 30 years of business, nonprofit and Chamber of Commerce leadership experience. A former Chula Vista city councilman, Alevy led public policy and communications at the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and was external affairs director for AT&T-SBC-Pacific Bell.
J Public Relations Adds Senior Publicist
Dawn Triemstra Seymour has been named a senior publicist with J Public Relations in San Diego. She has more than seven years of experience in the publishing and public relations fields. Prior to joining JPR, Seymour worked at several San Diego publications, including Riviera Magazine, where she focused on lifestyle reporting, with her main area of interest and expertise on fashion, restaurants and dining. Most recently, Triemstra worked as production manager of SURFING Magazine, where she produced the annual swimsuit issue for three years. Seymour also has been a freelance publicist.
Barnhart Balfour Beatty Completes Child Care Facility
General contractor Barnhart Balfour Beatty has completed construction of a new child care facility at the Ocean Air School Campus of the Del Mar Union School District. The company used the lease-leaseback delivery method for the $1.2-million project. The 3,213-square-foot building will be used for after-school care and contains classroom space along with two kitchens and three bathrooms. The building design includes a unique, barreled, standing-seam metal roof and is painted with six exterior colors. Barnhart Balfour Beatty built the main Ocean Air Campus at 11444 Canter Heights Drive in San Diego in 2006-2007. The San Diego office of the architecture firm Westberg + White designed the project. Members of the Barnhart team include vice president Tim Berry, superintendent Dan Chandler and field engineer Nick Steers.
