Deputy DA to Head County Bar Association in 2011
Dan Link, a deputy district attorney with the San Diego District Attorney’s Office, will be sworn in as the 2011 president of the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) on Dec. 3. Link has served on the association board for the past four years and co-chairs its bench-bar committee. Link will succeed 2010 president Patrick Hosey, who will serve on the board as immediate past president in 2011. Link is active in community service projects including Habitat for Humanity, Community HousingWorks’ FaceLift and the Adopt-a-Family holiday program. Marvin Mizell has been elected to the position of president-elect, and will serve as SDCBA president in 2012
San Diego attorneys Nadia Bermudez, Sheryl Graf, Patrick Ojeil, Thomas Penfield and Victor Torres have been elected by the SDCBA’s membership to serve three-year terms on the board beginning in 2011. Anna Romanskaya, incoming president of the SDCBA’s New Lawyers Division, also will serve a one-year term on the SDCBA board in 2011. Duane Horning, Marcella McLaughlin, Christopher Alexander, Tina Fryar, Alexander Gruft, Jeffrey Joseph, James Lund, Nory Pascua, Gita Varughese and Jon Williams will continue their service on the board in 2011.
The full SDCBA board will be sworn in to office on Dec. 3 at Stepping Up to the Bar, the association’s annual holiday reception
Two Irving Co. Buildings Receive BOMA Awards
Two of the Irvine Co.’s office properties in San Diego — One America Plaza in Downtown and La Jolla Centre I and II in University Town Center — have reeived major awards from the Building Owners and Managers Association of San Diego (BOMA). The association’s TOBY (The Outstanding Building of the Year) program recognizes quality and excellence in daily customer service and management of office buildings.
One America Plaza received a TOBY award in the category for buildings measuring more than 500,000 square feet. The building comprises 623,000 rentable square feet. Designed by architect Helmut Jahn, the 34-story Class A tower is a “next generation” building that features an optical network system, supporting high-speed network connections and Wi-Fi connectivity. La Jolla Centre I & II received a TOBY award in the category for buildings measuring between 250,000 and 499,999 square feet. Its two towers comprise 300,000 square feet of rentable Class A space.
The properties received high marks from judges from lighting and signage in stairwells and corridors, to building conveniences, to tenant testimonials and the properties’ positive impacts on the community. Both properties will now compete for regional TOBY awards, which will be presented next spring.
Randy Jones Opens New Sports Grill in Mission Valley
The pitch is new for Padres Cy Young Award winner Randy Jones. He’s partnered with restaurateur Mark Oliver to open the Randy Jones All American Sports Grill in Mission Valley. That’s the former location of Trophy’s, at the west end of Hazard Center. The bar offers a full bar with 24 American beers and microbrews on draft, a selection of cocktails and theme drinks, 22 big-screen TVs, a 14-foot projection screen in the bar and pool tables. Oliver is known for his affiliation with George’s in La Jolla and most recently for All American Grill, which he opened one year ago in the Hazard Center location. Jones has worked with Oliver to hand-pick featured menu selections including several of his barbecue specialties such as his slow-pitch baby back pork ribs and his Petco Park BBQ pulled pork sandwich. The restaurant is open Monday through Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m., and opens at 9:30 a.m. on football Saturdays and Sundays.
DLA Piper Partner Receives National Trailblazer Award
Marty Lorenzo, partner with DLA Piper LLP and chair of its Asian Pacific Islander South Asian Affinity Group, has received a 2010 Trailblazer Award from the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) for the Southern California region. The Trailblazer Award recognizes the outstanding achievements, commitment and leadership of NAPABA lawyers who have paved the way for advancement of other APA attorneys. “Each of the award recipients has demonstrated vision, courage and tenacity in their careers and has made substantial and lasting contributions to both the legal community and the broader APA community,” the association said.
Chula Vista Nature Center Receives $10,000 Grant
The Chula Vista Nature Center has received a $10,000 grant from Sempra Energy Foundation’s 2010 Environmental Champions Awards program. It will be used to support “Our Wild San Diego,” a center environmental education program, which provides field trips and real-world learning experiences on wildlife and habitats to children. Through the grant, the most economically challenged schools in the region will be eligible for field trip transportation assistance.
Higginson Appointed to Water Quality Control Board
Don Higginson, 55, of Poway, has been appointed to the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board by Gov. Schwarzenegger. He has served as senior vice president and attorney for Mail Boxes Etc. since 1982. Higginson has been a member of the Poway City Council since 1986, where he was mayor in 1992, 1994 and 2010. He represents Poway on the SANDAG board of directors and the SANDAG Regional Planning Committee. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Higginson is a Republican.
