University of San Diego Goes Solar
Close to 5,000 photovoltaic solar panels have been installed atop 11 buildings at the University of San Diego as part of a power purchase agreement between the university and AMSOLAR. The new solar system is expected to generate up to 15 percent of the university’s energy needs and establishes USD as the second largest solar energy producer of any private U.S. college and the 10th largest solar facility on a university campus in the country. Jared Blumenfield, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Pacific Southwest administrator, will appear at a morning program today to commemorate activation of the system. At 10:30 a.m., Len Hering, vice president of business services and administration at USD, will lead a rooftop tour of the solar panel installation at the top of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice. A celebration will follow featuring bands MayDay Parade and Every Avenue. USD President Mary E. Lyons also will speak. The solar panel installation has been conducted as part of a 25-year power purchase agreement with AMSOLAR and is supported in part by federal stimulus funding.
USD has entered into a comprehensive energy efficiency program to improve the sustainability of campus buildings through a partnership with Siemens Industry Inc. Siemens managed a multi-tiered project that encompasses nine prominent campus buildings over the past 10 monts. The improvements include upgrades to heating ventilation and air conditioning systems, new plumbing fixtures to reduce water consumption, lighting system upgrades and technologies that optimize fuel efficiency of USD’s central cooling and heating plant. The university said the improvements will dramatically reduce USD’s energy consumption and will reduce water usage 27 percent to levels not seen since 1991, when the campus was about half as large and had 2,600 fewer students. USD is working on an $8.2 million efficiency project to lighting, heating and water systems that will save the university more than $1 million annually.
Credit Union Celebrates Kearny Mesa Branch Opening
San Diego County Credit Union will celebrate its recently reopened Kearny Mesa branch at a 10 a.m. ceremony Wednesday. The branch is located in the new County Operations Center at 5500 Overland Ave., San Diego. The public is invited. Jack Nooren Named VP of NAI San Diego
Jack Nooren, an apartment broker for the past 17 years, has joined NAI San Diego as vice president. Nooren has launched a new Website (sdapartmentbrokers.com) feature more than 100 regional apartment listing. Nooren previously was president of the Nooren Commercial Group, responsible for managing as commercial brokerage office, a residential brokerage office, an apartment management company and a development company.
