San Diego Coastkeeper Executive Director Steps Down

Bruce Reznik

Bruce Reznik, a North Park resident who grew San Diego Coastkeeper from a two-person staff in a small office to a leading voice on water quality issues in San Diego, is stepping down as executive director after more than 11 years at the helm. Reznik said he would continue advocating for the nonprofit organization and its work in the community. “The long list of accomplishments (Reznik) and his team has achieved is a testament to his leadership and vision for this region,” said David Field, president of Coastkeeper’s board of directors.

Reznik joined San Diego Coastkeeper as the executive director in August 1999. During his tenure, significant improvements in the area of water quality in the region were realized, according to Field. Those include:

• Reducing sewage spills in the city of San Diego by 90 percent since 2001

• Reducing the number of beach advisories by 77 percent countywide since 2000

• Educating more than 160,000 children through Project SWELL.

• Engaging tens of thousands of volunteers to remove more than 1 million pounds of debris from area beaches and waterways.

• Building the state’s largest volunteer water quality monitoring program.

• Making the San Diego region a national leader in addressing urban runoff pollution.

• Driving the city of San Diego to undertake a demonstration project and regional study to assess the potential of using highly treated wastewater to augment local reservoirs.

• Building a vibrant environmental community and making coastal protection a larger part of the public and political dialogue.

Gabriel Solmer, legal director who has worked for Coastkeeper for seven years, will assume Reznik’s responsibilities while the board searches for a new executive director.

Trigild Adds Scripps Corporate Plaza to Portfolio

San Diego-based Trigild has added 11 commercial office and industrial properties to its portfolio of distressed commercial real estate, including Scripps Corporate Plaza, a three-building complex totaling 244,270 square feet at 10650-10680 Treena St. in San Diego. As the court appointed receiver, Trigild is charged with operating, repositioning— and protecting — the properties, all currently facing foreclosure. The other properties are located in Wilmington, Del.; New Orleans, La.; El Monte, Newport Beach, Seal Beach and Irvine, Calif.; Columbus, Ohio; and Glen Burnie, Md. Trigild now represents more than $6 billion in defaulted loans and anticipates a significant increase in its receivership business within the next few months, according to Bill Hoffman, company president.

Bridgepoint Education to Expand Operations

Bridgepoint Education Inc. plans to lease a yet-to-be-built eight-story building adjacent to its Sunroad Centrum headquarters to provide more space for its San Diego operations. The company signed a build-to-suit lease and intends to occupy the building — to be called Sunroad Centrum II — in 2012. The lease with Sunroad Enterprises is for 193,000 square feet of space.  “Leasing the Sunroad Centrum II building will allow us to increase jobs in the community, improve how we serve our students and continue on our mission to provide higher access to higher education,” said Rocky Sheng, chief administrative officer.

Workforce Partnership Funds Arc of San Diego Program

The San Diego Workforce Partnership has given a $125,000 grant to The Arc of San Diego to train and employ 40 adults with disabilities at The Arc’s Marine Corps Recuit Depot Food Service Program. The MCRD Mess Hall serves up to 18,000 meals a day to recruits and is the single largest mess hall in the country. This is the second year that The Arc of San Diego and the San Diego Workforce Partnership has collaborated together to employ adults with disabilities at the MCRD Mess Hall. “This grant gives continued opportunities for San Diegans with disabilities to obtain gainful employment,” said Councilman Todd Gloria, chair of the San Diego Consortium Policy Board.
