Council to Consider Equal Benefits Ordinance
The San Diego City Council today will consider approval of an Equal Benefits Ordinance (EBO) proposed by Councilman Todd Gloria. The measure would ensure that city contractors provide domestic partners of employees the same benefits provided to spouses of employees. Gloria will present the proposed ordinance. The proposal was recommended by the Committee on Rules, Open Government and Intergovernmental Relations Committee in June.
“The purpose of the EBO is equal pay for equal work,” said Gloria in a prepared statement. “To comply with such a law, a city contractor that offers health insurance and other benefits to employees’ spouses must offer equivalent coverage to employees’ domestic partners. The EBO would not require city contractors to begin offering benefits not previously offered. If a contractor does not offer benefits to married employees, it is not required to offer benefits to employees in domestic partnerships. The State of California and several cities have similar ordinances in place.
The hearing before the City Council will be at 2 p.m. in the City Administration Building, 12th floor, Downtown.
UCSD Chancellor Awarded National Medal of Science
President Barack Obama named Marye Anne Fox, chancellor at the University of California, San Diego, one of the 10 eminent researchers to receive the National Medal of Science, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on scientists, engineers and inventors. “The extraordinary accomplishments of these scientists, engineers and inventors are a testament to American industry and ingenuity,” Obama said. “Their achievements have redrawn the frontiers of human knowledge while enhancing American prosperity and it is my tremendous pleasure to honor them for their important contributions.”
Fox, a nationally recognized chemist and academic leader, was named the seventh chancellor of UCSD in April 2004. Since her appointment as chancellor, the university has established new research and partnership ventures to further innovation and increase international collaboration, achieved a $1 billion campaign goal, expanded academic and campus programs and facilities, and has received national and international recognition in university rankings.
“It’s a great honor to receive this prestigious recognition, and I am humbled and proud that the contributions made by my research group have advanced organic chemistry,” said Fox. “I was fortunate to have had brilliant and hardworking graduate students who focused on fundamental principles that were later translated into practical use in solar energy conversion, environmental remediation and material science. I truly believe that important developments in science and science education are vital for the future of this nation.”
Fox and the other recipients will receive their awards at a White House ceremony later this year. The National Medal of Science was created by statute in 1959 and is administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation. Awarded annually, the Medal recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to science and engineering.
Fox has received numerous research and teaching awards. From the American Chemical Society, she received the Garvan Award, the Southwest Regional Award and the Charles Lathrop Parsons Award for 2005, in recognition of outstanding public service.
Previously, Fox was chancellor and distinguished professor of chemistry at North Carolina State University, a post she held since 1998. Before going to North Carolina, Fox spent 22 years at the University of Texas, where she advanced from assistant professor of organic chemistry to vice president for research and held the Waggoner Regents Chair in chemistry.
Jacobs Center Targeted for Brownsfield Pilot Program
The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation has been selected to be a Brownfields Areawide Planning Pilot Program recipient by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with focus on the Village at Market Creek, where 12 sites are suspected to be contaminated brownfields. The Jacobs Center was one of only 23 recipients selected from across the nation to take part in the EPA pilot program to plan for the reuse of brownfields properties. The EPA is granting up to $175,000 to each of the recipients under a cooperative agreement and/or direct technical assistance to help develop and implement a plan. Brownfields are properties where the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants may complicate the properties’ expansion, redevelopment or reuse. The plans will integrate site cleanup and reuse into coordinated strategies to lay the foundation for addressing community needs such as economic development, job creation, housing, recreation, and education and health facilities.
Andaz San Diego Names Marketing Manager
Rachael Giannecchini has been named marketing manager for Andaz San Diego, a 159-room hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter in Downtown San Diego. Giannecchini will oversee all marketing operations for the hotel, including Ivy Rooftop, Ivy Wine Bar, Ivy Nightclub and Quarter Kitchen restaurant, in addition to the hotel’s catering and event programs. Giannecchini has worked for Hyatt since 2005, most recently serving as marketing manager of the 1,625-room Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego where she co-managed the hotel’s group and leisure markets, restaurants, bars, spa and local catering. She is an alumna of San Diego State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing.
Levitt Chairs S.D. Jewish Women’s Foundation
Jennifer Levitt has been installed as chair of the San Diego Jewish Women’s Foundation. Levitt follows in the footsteps of founding chair,Jan Tuttleman as well as Betty Byrnes, Marcia Hazan and Elaine Galinson. Established in 2004, the Jewish Women’s Foundation is an organization where members pool their resources and participate in grant making. Since its inception, it has granted and leveraged more than $400,000 to address needs facing Jewish women and girls in San Diego. In the last year, the JWF awarded grants to Jewish Family Service programs’ Project SARAH and Supporting Jewish Single Parents. Levitt moved to San Diego 21 years ago from Utah and earned her degree from UCSD where she is currently a doctoral candidate in sociology.
