Big Southwestern College Project to Start
The largest construction project at Southwestern College since the school was originally constructed in 1961 will be formally started on Wednesday with the groundbreaking for the “corner lot” development. The corner lot at East H Street and Otay Lakes Road in Chula Vista will be the site of the 110,000-square-foot development that will include a new college bookstore, classroom space, food court, art gallery, culinary arts program, a wellness center, administrative offices, conference space and a police station. The project was designed by BCA Architects. Echo Pacific Construction Inc. is the contractor. Wednesday’s 11 a.m. groundbreaking will feature feature Raj K. Chopra, superintendent/president of the college; Yolanda Salcido, governing board president; Manny Lopez, president of Southwestern College Associated Students; Paul Bunyon of BCA Architects; Chris Rowe of Echo Pacific Construction and Chula Vista Mayor Cheryl Cox.
Real Estate Trends Conference Set for Nov. 9
The eighth annual Real Estate Trends Conference put on by the ULI San Diego/Tijuana District Council on Nov. 9 will focus on residential and commercial markets and banking and government. “Innovation is the New Normal” is the theme of the event, to be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center, 404 Euclid Ave., San Diego. John McIlwain, ULI Fellow, will present the opening welcome and keynote speech on “Housing in America – the Next Decade.” His comments will relate to how Gen Y and the baby boomers will impact the future of home ownership and location. Retired Qualcomm co-founder and Leap Wireless CEO Harvey White will offer closing remarks on the topic of incorporating art into the education system in order for children to develop innovative skills. Conference session topics include: San Diego Market Trends, with panelists representing residential, commercial, retail and industrial real estate; The Future of Banking/Finance; and The Future of Government. Conference presenters will include Lynn Reaser, Point Loma Nazarene College, Fermanian Business and Economic Institute; Gary Sabin, Excel Reality; Doug Wilson, Douglas Wilson Cos.; Marie Kunac, Embarcadero Bank; Scott Ripperton, Wells Fargo Bank; Scott Lewis, Voice of San Diego; Tom Murphy, former mayor of Pittsburgh; and Laurie Black, CCDC.

Nierenberg Prize to be Awarded Nov. 9
Ira Flatow, science journalist and host of NPR’s “Science Friday,” has been selected to receive the 2010 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest. The award was created to honor the memory of William A. Nierenberg, who was director of UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography for 21 years. A bronze medal and a $25,000 prize are awarded each year for outstanding contributions to science in the public interest. The award was created and is supported by gifts from the Nierenberg Family. The public is invited to attend the free presentation by Flatow following a brief award ceremony on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the main auditorium at the Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society, and the Environment located at 8610 Kennel Way in La Jolla. Navy Veteran Joins RBF Consulting
Rear Adm. Mike Giorgione (USN Ret.) has joined RBF Consulting as the energy services market leader and vice president in the firm’s San Diego office. Giorgione has led efforts executing renewable energy projects in California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii. He was instrumental in writing the first Strategic Renewable Energy Action Plan for the Navy-Marine Corps in 2007 for installations in the Southwest and for leading photovoltaic, solar thermal, and geothermal projects. Giorgione served as principal adviser on the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative and he oversaw wave buoy testing and OTEC exploration in the Indian Ocean. He worked with the Hawaiian Electric Company on Clean technology initiatives in Hawaii, including development of biofuels energy sources. Giorgione retired from the Navy in 2010.
Brown Law Group Founder and Associate Honored
Janice Brown, founder of Brown Law Group, has been named recipient of Gonzaga University Alumni Association’s highest honor — the Distinguished Alumni Merit Award. Jaejung Kim, an associate attorney in Brown Law Group, has been named a board member of the Korean-American Bar Association of Southern California.
Brown, who will receive her award at a ceremony Oct. 14 at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., noted that she earned her law degree from Gonzaga in just two years (with honors), but took away a lifetime of wisdom from her professors and work experiences. “I learned how to practice law at the Legal Clinic and was also a law clerk in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Spokane,” she said. Brown started her firm in 1999. It focuses on business and employment litigation, assisting clients in litigation avoidance strategies, practicing preventative law, representing clients with employment issues such as wrongful termination, race and sex discrimination claims and sexual harassment claims.
In addition to the Korean-American Bar Association, Kim is a member of the Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego, Lawyers Club of San Diego, San Diego County Bar Association and American Bar Association. She also is on the board of directors of the San Diego Asian Film Foundation and serves as secretary.
