Trendy Boutique to Join Gaslamp

Gaslamp City Square’s 57,000 square feet of street level retail space has added a new tenant to Downtown San Diego’s Fifth Avenue corridor — retro retailer Bettie Page Boutique. The boutique signed a 10-year lease for 3,757 square feet of space at 430 Fifth Ave., Suite 103, and plans to open by year’s end. It will be the fifth location for the 1950s-era clothing manufacturer and retailer, which has locations in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco. The boutique will also feature an adjoining upscale tattoo parlor. “The Bettie Page Boutique’s trendsetting style has achieved a star-studded following that includes country stars Miranda Lambert and Kellie Pickler, as well as Bridget Marquardt and Holly Madison, among others,” said Corinna Gattasso, director with the Cushman & Wakefield Urban Property Group.

Cruzan Monroe Buys Kearny Mesa Office Building

Cruzan Monroe has purchased a 48,100-square-foot office building in Kearny Mesa for $5.05 million, a three-story structure that was previously occupied by AT&T, which vacated the property after being there for 11 years. Cruzan Monroe intends to start upgrading the property, including interior demolition, parking lot repair, new landscaping and enhanced entries. Bill Dolan and Rob Merkin of CB Richard Ellis are marketing the property for lease on behalf of the new owner. The office building was built in 1971 on a 3.09-acre lot located immediately off State Route 52 at Convoy Street and features a 5/1,000 parking ratio. Paul Komadina, Paul Lafrenz and Christina Roush of CB Richard Ellis represented Cruzan Monroe. Dolan and Merkin represented the seller, Pacific Bell Telephone Co.

Panel to Focus on Illegal Immigration

Syndicated columnist Ruben Navarette and San Diego immigration attorney Lilia Velasquez will appear on an Oct. 19 panel in Kensington on the subject of illegal immigration. The panel talk is sponsored by the Kensington Community Church and will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the church’s Lander Hall, 4773 Marlborough Drive. The topic is: “Response to Arizona: A Panel Discussion About Illegal Immigration.” The event is free. Conflict Resolution Center Obtains Funds for More Training

The National Conflict Resolution Center in San Diego (NCRC) has been given a $200,000 grant from the county’s Health and Human Services Department to continue its training program for community leaders who manage conflicts within their organizations, neighborhoods, schools and with gangs. With the additional funds, the training program, called The Exchange, will be directed at the organizations awaiting assistance, including Somali Family Services, the YWCA, Head Start and Urban Corps. The dollars are provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. A total of 720 San Diego community leaders have already undergone training. The NCRC has announced a fundraising goal to match the county’s $200,000 in funding, which would be enough to train at least 700 additional community leaders.

UCSD Researchers Receives $3.86 Million Grant

Seth Field, associate professor in the Department of Medicine at UCSD, has been awarded a five-year, $3.86 million grant from the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program for his research project, “A New Path to Breast Cancer Therapy.” The study will investigate the mechanism by which a lipid-binding protein called GOLPH3 contributes to cancer. In 2008, Field was a winner of the NIH New Innovator award to study the function of the group of lipid signaling molecules called phosphoinositides and their target proteins such as GOLPH3. These are molecules which are known to play critical roles in regulating cell growth and death, metabolism, and communication processes within cells.

Local Legislators Sign Clean Water Resolution

Five members of San Diego’s state legislative delegation signed a resolution on Thursday to develop a comprehensive and sustainable water plan to make San Diego the nation’s Clean Water Capital. The formal commitment came at the conclusion of San Diego Coastkeeper’s inaugural Bipartisan Legislative Summit, which examined the region’s most pressing water issues and potential solutions. Sen. Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) and Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher (R-San Diego) co-chaired the event at UCSD.

“San Diego is home to vibrant and growing high-tech, bio-tech, clean-tech and green-tech sectors that rely on a first rate quality of life to attract top national talent,” said Kehoe. “We need bipartisan leadership to secure a water future that keeps these businesses here.”

 Added Fletcher: “Together we can find solutions that strengthen our local economy and ensure access to a clean and healthy water supply for our families.

Members of the state Senate and Assembly, county Board of Supervisors and San Diego City Council attended the half-day summit, which had scientists, ecologists and legal experts reporting on the latest findings regarding San Diego’s water supply and watershed health.

 “We currently import more than 80 percent of our water from outside of the region, and we have 271 separate water bodies that do not meet federal Clean Water Act standards,” said San Diego Coastkeeper Executive Director Bruce Reznik. “We are thrilled that San Diego members of the California state Senate and Assembly are setting a new standard in working together to achieve a diverse and sustainable water supply for our region.”

 State delegation members who joined Kehoe and Fletcher in signing the resolution are Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña, Assemblyman Marty Block and Assemblywoman Mary Salas.

Landscape Architect to Advise Chollas Creek Group

Dick Rol, ecologist and landscape architect for AECOM Corp., has been tabbed to advise the Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek nonprofit group in its efforts to improve the environment and quality of life within the Chollas Creek area. Rol, a resident of Normal Heights, has worked for private planning and design firms as well as state and local governments including the city of San Diego. His work focuses on natural resource planning, habitat restoration and open space issues. Rol has been involved in citywide open space issues for 10 years, including serving as a city staff member on the Open Space Citizen’s Advisory Committee, city staff liaison to the Wetlands Advisory Board, a member of San Diego Canyonlands’ Canyon Enhancement Planning Committee and a leader of the Friends of Normal Heights Canyons.

At Groundwork, Rol will serve as the lead board director on the Cactus Wren grant, a two-year project to rehabilitate nearly 75 acres of canyons in Encanto. His responsibilities will include advising the group on restoration programs; public education and outreach; attending board meetings; and providing technical expertise regarding grant acquisition and grant-funded project implementation.

Sea World Walk for Rady Children’s Hospital

San Diego County Credit Union is the presenting sponsor of the fourth annual Sea World Shamu & You Family Walk for Rady Children’s Hospital starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday at South Shores Park in Mission Bay. More than 2,000 participants are expected to walk to help raise money for Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. The Walk will feature Sea World characters, flamingos and other animals along a one or four-mile course that begins at the South Shores Park boat ramp on South Shores Road, a bayside park located just east of SeaWorld San Diego. Registration cost is $27 for adults and $17 for children ages 13 and under. All participants will receive a t-shirt, free admission to the post-walk festivities and a 50 percent discount coupon to return to Sea World after the Walk.
