Scripps Health Foundation Names Director of Development
Kate Carinder has joined Scripps Health Foundation as senior director of development at Scripps Mercy Hospital. Carinder’s job is to raise community awareness of the philanthropic needs of the nonprofit hospital, including the three-phase, $50 million capital campaign, “Caring for the Future: The Campaign for Scripps Mercy Hospital.” Carinder was most recently with The University of Iowa Foundation and the College of Medicine. Prior to that, she served as executive director of a community foundation and worked in several external and government relations positions for Iowa State University. A native of Kansas City, Mo., Carinder earned her bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University and her master’s degree from The George Washington University in Washington D.C.
Michael Croft Named to Head Institute’s Immune Section
The La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology has promoted scientist Michael Croft to lead its Division of Immune Regulation, which researches innovative ways to use the power of the immune system to fight disease. Croft is to work with other faculty members to advance a wide range of research initiatives, including the work of Chris Benedict, who focuses on how the immune system responds to viruses, and Don Newmeyer, who studies the process of cell death, which has implications for combating cancer as well as viruses and autoimmune diseases. Croft’s division is one of five research divisions at the institute. Croft received his bachelor’s degree from Brunel University in London and a Ph.D. in immunology from Sussex University in the U.K. In 1989, he moved to the biology department at UCSD and in 1996 he joined the Immunochemistry Division of the La Jolla Institute as assistant member, and was appointed as an associate member in 2001. Croft became a tenured faculty member in 2003.
Chula Vista Nature Center Restructures Management
The Chula Vista Nature Center has promoted Ben Vallejos to chief operating officer and has hired Linda Koch as animal care and training supervisor. Vallejos has been with the center for eight years. He joined in 2002 as the bookstore manager and was promoted to program manager for operations. He holds a bachelor of science degree in marine biology from San Diego State University and an associate degree in aquarium and aquaculture science from Saddleback College. A native of Finland, Koch is fluent in three languages – Finnish, Swedish and English. She earned a bachelor of science degree in information technology and electrical engineering from the Information Technical School in Haiko, Finland, and an associate of arts degree in agricultural business management from Naturbruks Institutet in Kimito, Finland. Under a new organizational structure under new Executive Director Brian Joseph, all of the center’s animal care specialists have been placed into a single team managed by Koch. She has more than 10 years of animal care and training experience. Vallejos will have greater responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Nature Center, allowing Joseph to focus more time on community development and fundraising for the organization. The move will provide continuity in leadership during Joseph’s upcoming deployment to the Middle East as part of the U.S. Army Public Health Command.
$120,000 Donated to Balboa Park Conservancy
The Legler Benbough Foundation, Parker Foundation and the Balboa Park Trust Committee of The San Diego Foundation have provided a gift of $120,000 to support the launch of the Balboa Park Conservancy, a nonprofit group that is to help manage the park and raise money for its upkeep and its projects. Mayor Jerry Sanders announced the donation and the names of the Balboa Park Conservancy board members: Charles Hellerich, chairman, and Joye Blount, Carol Chang, Benjamin Clay, Maria Davilla, Raymond Ellis, Joyce Gattas, Vicki Granowitz, Connie Matsui Beckman, Paul Meyer and Judith Swink. Each of the institutions has a long history of involvement with issues regarding the governance of Balboa Park, beginning in 2006 when the Legler Benbough Foundation commissioned the Trust for Public Land to produce a study of management and fundraising models in other major U.S. cities with large urban parks. The Balboa Park Conservancy is seeking additional funding and support. Program Focuses on Computer Security Threats
Torrey Pines Bank will host an Oct. 7 breakfast program to inform business owners about computer security threats. Titled “The New Asset Protection Strategy: Cyber Crime, Identity Theft and Fraud Prevention,” the program will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at The Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, 3777 La Jolla Village Drive, San Diego. The San Diego County Taxpayers Association will host a breakfast program on Oct. 20 on the region’s garbage and waste system. It will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Holiday Inn San Diego on the Bay, 1355 North Harbor Drive, in Downtown San Diego. The cost is $35 for members, $45 for nonmembers. Chief of Naval Operations Speaks in San Diego
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughhead will speak Friday at the Fleet Week Foundation breakfast at the Admiral Kidd Club and Conference Center. The foundation produces the annual Fleet Week breakfast in partnership with the San Diego Military Advisory Council. Fleet Week events run through Oct. 3 (visit fleetweeksandiego.org for a schedule). The Admiral Kidd Center is located at the Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, 1700 Harbor Drive, San Diego.
El Cajon Public Safety Center Nears Completion
Construction of the city of El Cajon’s new $40 million Public Safety Center is more than half completed, according to KMA Architecture & Engineering, which designed the center at Magnolia and East Park Avenue, adjacent to the El Cajon Civic Center. KMA’s project designs included 113,000 square feet of public safety facilities and a multi-story building, which includes space that functions as a community room and an emergency operations center for the region. A 166,000-square-foot parking structure has also been designed and will include garages, vehicle maintenance facilities and parking for 638 police and city staff. The project includes sustainable features such as daylighting, high efficiency glass and shading devices. Don Blair, president of KMA, is principal-in-charge of the project and B. Moon Hajjar is the project manager. The firm’s project team also consists of Jim Belmont, Walt Chambers, Jen Gagne, Rich Guerena, Jay Janda and Ilia Voronchihin. KMA’s engineering division also provided electrical, mechanical and plumbing engineering services. The associate architect for the project is Jim McClaren of MWL Architects. Burkett & Wong provided both civil and structural engineering services, and the landscape architect is Wimmer Yamada and Caughey.
Federal Funds Allows SDSU to Enroll More Students
Federal stimulus funds awarded to the California State University system will allow San Diego State to enroll about 1,700 new upper-division transfer students this coming spring. The one-time final round of State Fiscal Stabilization Fund dollars from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will allocate $106 million to the CSU to be divided among the 23 campuses. SDSU’s allocation is $8.7 million. “This new funding comes at a time when the demand to enroll at SDSU has never been higher,” said Sandra Cook, associate vice president for enrollment services. “Because of state budget cuts, we have had to turn away hundreds of upper-division transfer students the past two years. The stimulus funds will allow us to enroll some of these hard-working students who would like to graduate with an SDSU degree.” The deadline for students to apply for the spring 2011 semester has been extended for the second time. Applications will now be accepted through Sept. 27.
Torrey Pines Bank Announces Promotion and New Hires
Burt Brigida, a 20-plus-year veteran of the banking industry, has been promoted to manager of Torrey Pines Bank’s Golden Triangle office. He was senior vice president and commercial lending officer working at the bank’s Kearny Mesa office. The bank also announced the hiring of five executives. Susan Brown joins the bank as senior vice president, senior credit administrator. Sonja McQueen was named as vice president, cash management sales officer. Kathy Crockett was hired as vice president, project manager. Enrique Melgar joins the bank as vice president, relationship manager and operates from the Symphony Towers office. Tom Hillebrecht was hired as vice president, relationship manager and works from the bank’s Carmel Valley office.
U.S. Bank Names SBA Division Leader
Julie Huston has been selected by U.S. Bank to lead its Small Business Administration lending as president of U.S. Bank SBA Division. She is based in San Diego. Prior to joining U.S. Bank, Huston was chief operating officer of CapitalSource/MainStreet Lender in Denver. Prior to that, she was a senior vice president and sales manager for GE Commercial Finance’s franchise finance operations in Scottsdale, Ariz. She also held senior management positions with Textron Financial Corp. and AT&T Capital Corporation/Newcourt Financial/CIT. A Montana native, Huston earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Montana, Missoula.
SDSU to Unveil Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate
More than 200 people from the local real estate development industry will join Mayor Sanders, SDSU President Steven Weber and SDSU Dean of Business Gail Naughton on Sept. 23 to introduce the new Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate at San Diego State University and its first director, Michael Lea. The event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center on campus (a map is at sandiego.edu/maps). The mission of The Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate is to improve real estate education and research at SDSU and create a bridge to the real estate industry and San Diego community to foster interaction between students, faculty and industry participants. Mark McMillin, president and CEO of McMillin Communities, will participate in the introduction.
