Lunch With the 40 Under 40
San Diego Metropolitan Magazine’s 11th annual 40 Under 40 Awards luncheon will be held at noon on Sept. 9 in Ballroom 6 A&B of the San Diego Convention Center. Tickets are $75. Tables are $750. Bank of Southern California Acquires 2 Palm Desert Branches
Bank of Southern California announced that it will acquire two branch offices of Palm Desert National Bank in a transaction expected to close by mid-October. “This acquisition is consistent with our plans to continue to expand the bank’s footprint within San Diego County and beyond,” said Nathan Rogge, president and CEO of Bank of Southern California. “We are excited about the economic opportunities in the Coachella Valley and believe the region has a bright future as the economy recovers.” When the transaction is completed, Palm Desert National Bank will continue to operate its Palm Desert office at 73-745 El Paseo. The bank had $237.5 million in assets as of June 30.
The offices being acquired are the Palm Springs office at 333 N. Palm Canyon Drive, Suite 102, in Palm Springs, and the La Quinta office at 47-000 Washington St. in La Quinta. Bank of Southern California plans to retain the employees who currently work in those offices.
Bank of Southern California, which operates offices in Del Mar, Carlsbad, Ramona and Downtown San Diego, had $127.3 million in assets as of June 30.
Sports Clinic to Help Injured Veterans
The National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic, where recently injured veterans are taught to surf, kayak, sail, cycle and enjoy other sport, will be held Sept. 19-25 in various locations in San Diego. The third annual event is sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Events at the rehabilitation clinics include adaptive kayaking, sailing, track and field, cycling and surfing, using venues throughout the San Diego area, including the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Participation is open to military veterans who are eligible for VA medical care and have orthopedic amputations, traumatic brain injuries, burn injuries, psychological trauma, certain neurological conditions, visual impairment, spinal cord injuries or other injuries incurred during the past six years. Midway Museum to Honor Lee Iacocca
Automotive pioneer Lee Iacocca will received the Midway American Patriot Award from the USS Midway Museum at a flight deck black-tie gala on Sept. 2. Start time is 6 p.m. The 100-piece San Diego Symphony will perform live during the evening’s ceremony. Miss America 2010 will sing the national anthem and Frank Sinatra Jr. will sing a tribute to his father. More than 600 are expected to attend. Iacocca is the creator of the Mustang and was the leader of the bicentennial campaign to restore the Statue of Liberty in 1776.
San Diego Hospice Receives Grant from Hearst Foundation
San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine received a $75,000 grant from the Hearst Foundation to develop a palliative care curriculum that will enhance nursing education programs offered locally. Four universities and colleges have been selected to collaborate with The Institute for Palliative Medicine’s faculty in integrating palliative care training for nurse education — Azusa Pacific University, California State University San Marcos, National University and Southwestern College. Scripps Institution Hosts Paleoceanography Conference
Scripps Institution of Oceanography will host the 10th International Conference on Paleoceanography Monday through Sept. 3 in Mandeville Auditorium at UCSD. Sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. daily. The conference is held every three years at venues throughout the world. About 500 participants are expected. Delegates will represent more than 20 countries.
Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution, who coined the phrase “ocean acidification,” will explain how several specific examples from earth history lend quantitative perspective on the issue of future climate sensitivity to increased greenhouse gases. His eynote presentation is Monday at 5:30 p.m. Richard Mortlock of Rutgers University will present a new record of sea level variability over the last 60,000 years. This record captures the growth/melting of continental ice in unprecedented detail. His presentation is Sept. 1 at 8:30 a.m. Stephen Eggins of Australian National University will present new “chemical maps” of the calcium carbonate structures of tiny marine organisms known as foraminifera, which comprise a substantialportion of deep-sea sediments, demonstrating a technical advance that isessential for refining the reconstruction of past ocean temperatures. The presentation is Aug. 31 at 8:30 a.m. Odd-Helge Otterå of Uni Bjerknes Center, Norway will be among presenters discussing new ideas on the mechanisms of “abrupt” climate change. The presentation is Sept. 2 at 10:45 a.m.
Nuffer, Smith Tucker Hires Account Executive and Coordinator
Rebecca Howe has joined Nuffer, Smith Tucker as an account executive and Katie Rowland has taken a post as an account coordinator Howe joins NST after spending nearly four years at a public relations firm in Michigan. Rowland previously served as an intern with NST and was hired full-time immediately following her graduation from San Diego State University this year with a degree in public relations. Prior to joining NST, Howe served as an associate with Lambert, Edwards & Associates, a Michigan-based public relations and investor relations firm. She received her bachelor’s degree in public relations and marketing from Central Michigan University in 2006 and is a member of the Public Relations Society of America. Rowland was an intern in November 2009. She also served as an event intern for the Sundt Memorial Foundation in San Diego.
Mesa College Building Receives LEED Certification
The new Allied Health Education and Training Facility at San Diego Mesa College has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for sustainable and green design by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The Allied Health building, which opened in August 2009, is the San Diego Community College District’s sixth facility to be LEED certified and fourth to achieve a LEED Gold. The three-story, 50,000-square-foot building provides training facilities and classroom space for degree and certificate programs for five health care fields: Dental Assisting, Health Information Technology, Medical Assisting Physical Therapy Assistant and Radiologic Technology.
