40 Under 40 Nominations
Nominations are now open for San Diego Metropolitan Magazine’s 11th annual 40 Under 40 awards. The nomination period ends May 31. The honorees will be feted at our annual luncheon on Sept. 9 at the San Diego Convention Center and profiled in the September issue of the magazine. Public Comment Sought on Proposed Trolley Extension
The proposed 11-mile extension of the San Diego Trolley from the Old Town Transit Center to University City, University Towne Centre and UCSD will be the subject of “scoping” meetings today and May 11, 12, 20 and 25 sponsored by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG). The meetings are to allow the public and agencies to learn about the proposal and make comments and suggestions. SANDAG staff will present the three routes being studied for the new light rail line and potential station locations.
Today’s meeting will be from 4 to 7 p.m. in the SANDAG board room, 401 B St., seventh floor, in Downtown San Diego.

• May 11, 3 to 6 p.m., Price Center East Ballroom, UCSD campus, 9500 Gilman Drive, University City.
• May 12, 4 to 7 p.m., Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center Garfield Theatre, 4126 Executive Drive, University City.

There are several ways to submit comments to SANDAG regarding the project. A court reporter will be on hand at each of the scoping meetings to take down verbal comments. Forms also will be available for those who wish to submit their comments in writing. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Hosts Forum
Alan Bersin, newly appointed commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, will host a public forum on Thursday (May 6) to discuss the agency’s vision for improving the secure flow of legal goods and people through the region’s ports of entry. The forum will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Ellipse Chapel at Point Loma Nazarene University, 3900 Loma Land Drive, San Diego 92106.
Chicano Federation Holds Unity Luncheon on Friday
Jeffrey Davidow, president of La Jolla-based Institute of the Americas and a former U.S. ambassador to Mexico and Venezuela, will be the keynote speaker at the Chicago Federation of San Diego County’s annual Unity Luncheon Friday (May 7) in the Pacific Ballroom of the Holiday Inn on the Bay, 1355 N. Harbor Drive, in Downtown San Diego. The luncheon will honor Raymond Uzeta, president and CEO of the Chicano Federation, who is retiring on May 14. Mayor Appoints Chair of International Affairs Board
Cath DeStefano, executive director of the Citizen Diplomacy Council of San Diego, has been appointed chairperson of the International Affairs Board by Mayor Jerry Sanders. The purpose of the civic board is to foster and promote friendly relations and better understanding between people of San Diego and the people of foreign nations. In her work with the Citizen Diplomacy Council, DeStefano partners with the U.S. State Department and U.S. AID to bring leaders to San Diego to meet with local citizens and experts. In the past year more than 600 leaders from throughout the world have visited San Diego under the auspices of CDCSD.
Seven Condos Sold at Cabrillo Medical Center
Seven medical office condominiums totaling 7,623 square feet have sold at Cabrillo Medical Center in Kearny Mesa, bringing the units
sold to 70 percent. No financial terms were disclosed by the seller, Fenway Properties V LLC. In each of the sales, the seller was represented by Matthew Carlson and J. P. Huntington of Cushman & Wakefield. The property is at 7695 Cardinal Court, San Diego 92123.
EN Med Center LLC purchased three office suites totaling 3,888 square feet (Suites 3-6, 3-7, 3-8). The buyer represented itself and will use the space for dental-related services.
Elite Ortho Center LLC purchased four office suites totaling 3,735 square feet (Suites 3-9, 3-10, 3-11, 3-12). The buyer represented itself and will use the space for dental-related services.
Fenway Properties acquired the building in 2005 and rebuilt the current 31,222-square-foot, three-story, Class A facility which was completed in 2007.
Three suites totaling 9,708 square feet remain available for sale. The listing agents are Carlson and Huntington.
Betterlife America Buys Into Carlsbad Raceway Business Park
Betterlife America Inc. has purchased a 7,751-square-foot building at The Collection at Lionshead project, formerly The Opus Collection project, in the Carlsbad Raceway Business Park. The seller, Wells Fargo Bank, was represented by Gary Williams and Chris of Colliers International and the buyer was represented by Dan Tate and Conor Boyle, also of Colliers International. The Collection at Lionshead consists of 7 freestanding office buildings in a garden setting. Each building is divisible into individual condo units ranging in sizes from 3,806 square feet to 12, 176 square feet. Three and a half of the seven buildings have been sold.
MIR3 Appoints 2 Vice Presidents
MIR3 Inc. has appointed Clifton McLellan to vice president of engineering and Robert Fink to vice president of platform technologies. McLellan will oversee the firm’s software development and network operations teams. He has more than two decades of experience in the high-tech industry. Prior to MIR3, he held numerous executive-level positions for companies including Glynlyon, Inc., GeoMark, and Enosys Software.
Millennium Laboratories Names New President
Millennium Laborabories, which provides therapeutic drug monitoring to physicians treating chronic pain, has appointed Howard Appel, former chief financial officer, to president of the company. Appel has more than 25 years of experience in executive positions. Prior to joining Millennium, he was CEO of a boutique financial advisory and served as CFO of Laffer Associates for 17 years. He has sat on the boards of several publicly and privately held firms including Millennium. Appel received a bachelor’s degree in business and accounting from California State University, Chico.
Open University Summer Classes Begin May 27
Persons who want to attend courses at San Diego State but don’t want to go through the formal admitting process can do so through the College of Extended Studies Open University program. It allows individuals to enroll in courses (on a space available basis) without formal admission to the unviersity. Summer semester classes start on May 27. Participants can take classes to finish a degree, for career advancement or for personal enrichment. Certain restrictions apply. Lawnmower Exchange Sets a Record
A record 785 gas lawn mowers were exchanged for rechargeable models during the 11th annual Lawnmower Trade-In event started by county Supervisor Ron Roberts. The rechargeable mowers, which normally retail for $399 plus tax, were available for $99.99 during the trade-in. Nearly 1,000 county residents took advantage of the exchange program. The previous exchange record of 600 was set in 2002. Contributing to the popularity of this year’s event was the record price, down $50.01 from the $150 of past events. Black and Decker was the winning bidder for the lawn mower contract negotiated by the county.
