Memorial Day Services
San Marcos: VFW Post 3795 to host 11 a.m. service at San Marcos Cemetery, 1021 Mulberry Drive, San Marcos. Potluck afterwards at the VFW post, 212 W. Mission Road.
Balboa Park: Vietnam Veterans of America, San Diego Chapter 472, will have remembrance ceremony at 7:30 a.m. at the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center, followed by open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Oceanside: Veterans and fraternal organizations of North County will sponsor a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Elks Lodge, 444 Country Club Lane, Oceanside. A light lunch will be served afterwards.
Lakeside: Veterans of Foreign Wars, Carter-Smith Post 5867, will stage a 10 a.m. ceremony at 12650 Lindo Lane, Lakeside. Speakers: Congressman Duncan Hunter and county Supervisor Dianne Jacob.
Coronado: A 10 a.m. service by Coronado Navy League, Coronado Military Officers Association of America and VFW Post 2422. Location: Coronado Star Park. 1121 Star Park Circle.
La Jolla: Memorial Day ceremony honoring Col. Robert L. Howard, Medal of Honor recipient, who served five tours in Vietnam. 2 to 3:15 p.m.
Point Loma: Memorial Day Service and Day of Remembrance ceremony, 10 a.m., Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Guest speaker: Rear Adm. Garry Bonelli, deputy commander of Naval Special Warfare Command.
Rancho Bernardo: Rancho Bernardo Veterans Memorial Association hosts ceremony from 10:40 to 11:45 a.m. at Webb Park on Avena Place, off Bernardo Center Drive. Appearance by Camp Pendleton honor guard and the Rancho Bernardo High School Choir. Speaker: Army Gen. Robert Abrams, commander of Fort Irwin and the National Training Center.
Solana Beach: Ceremony from 11 a.m. to noon hosted by the city of Solana Beach and VFW Post 5431, Veterans Memorial in La Colonia Community Park, 715 Valley Ave., Solana Beach.
Mail Ballot Request Deadline is Tuesday
Persons who want to vote by mail in the June 8 gubernatorial primary election have until Tuesday to request a mail ballot from the county Registrar of Voters.
There are several ways to apply:
• Complete the application included on the back of the sample ballot and voter information pamphlet mailed to each registered voter.
• Download an application from the Registrar of Voters Website (sdcounty.ca.gov/voters/Eng/Eindex.shtml.)
• Fax or mail a note to the Registrar of Voters. The request must include the voter’s name, residence address, name and date of the election for which a ballot is requested, the address where the ballot is to be mailed, and the voter’s signature.
Applications and notes can be faxed to (858) 694-2955 or sent to the Registrar of Voters at P.O. Box 85520, San Diego, CA 92186-5520.
By state law, applications must be physically received by the Registrar of Voters no later than 5 p.m. on June 1. They cannot be simply postmarked on that date.
Those who miss the deadline can vote in person at the Registrar of Voters office at 5201 Ruffin Road, Suite I, in Kearny Mesa.
Water Authority Extends Drought Alert
The San Diego County Water Authority board has extended its Level 2 drought alert condition for another year, allowing member agencies to keep water use restrictions and other mandatory conservation measures in place through June 2011. “This winter’s above-average rain and snow prevented our current water shortage conditions from worsening, but we remain only one dry year away from potentially severe shortages,” said Claude A. “Bud” Lewis, Water Authority board chair. “We still face significant water supply challenges created by regulatory restrictions on water deliveries from the Bay-Delta and the lingering effects of the prior three years of drought. We must continue to use water wisely.”
The board’s decision to continue limited water deliveries, or “allocations,” means the region will need to continue to keep urban water use at least 8 percent below pre-cutback levels. Specific supply reductions within local agencies may vary, depending on how much of its total water supply each agency receives from the Water Authority and how much local water supplies it has available.
Level 2 water use restrictions also vary from agency to agency, but typically include restrictions on outdoor watering days and times, prohibitions on washing down paved surfaces, and repairing leaks within a certain time period. Some agencies also limit new water service or have escalating rates to discourage excessive use. The Water Authority urges residents and businesses to contact their local water agency to learn about any restrictions or rates that apply in their community. Museum of Art Names New Executive Director
Roxana Velásquez Martínez del Campo has been named executive director of the San Diego Museum of Art, the first female ever appointed to the post, and will begin work in the fall. She succeeds Derrick R. Cartwright, who left the museum’s top staff position in September 2009.
American born and raised in Mexico, Velásquez has represented professional, civic, and cultural endeavors at three major national museums in Mexico City. She has served as the director of Museo Nacional de San Carlos, Museo Nacional de Arte (Munal) and, most recently, Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes.
“Roxana brings to the museum an impeccable ability to manage all facets of a major arts institution, a strong network within the global art community, and a cross-border cultural perspective,” said Ken Widder, president of the Museum of Art board of trustees.
Velásquez has helped organize highly successful international exhibitions like “Rubens and his Century,” “Victorian Era,” “Goya,” “Frida Kahlo Centennial” and “Illusions of the Middle East from Delacroix to Moreau” – all of which brought record exhibition attendance.
Velásquez, a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors Board of Trustees and Asociación Mexicana de Profesionales de Museos, has been distinguished by the King of Spain with the Cross of Isabel la Católica for outstanding cultural projects of Spanish art organized in Mexico.
Ron Fowler Chairs USD Board of Trustees
Ron L. Fowler, chairman and CEO of Liquid Investments Inc., has been elected chairman of the USD Board of Trustees, effective July 1. Fowler currently serves on the USD Committee on Trustees, Executive Committee, Mission and Institutional Advancement Committee, the Task Force on Governance and is chair of the Athletics Committee. Fowler has served on a variety of local boards including as chairman of the San Diego Hall of Champions, founding chairman of the San Diego International Sports Council, chairman emeritus of the SDSU Campanile Foundation and founding chairman of the SDSU Entrepreneurial Management Center.
Barona Indians Offer Environmental Scholarships
The Barona Band of Mission Indians is accepting applications for its Barona Sustainable Environmental Scholarship for college students pursuing careers in environmental industries. Barona will grant four scholarships to qualified recipients. The scholarship funds can be used to supplement costs incurred through tuition, books and living expenses. The application deadline is July 15 and the winners will be announced on Aug. 1.
Applicants must be studying a field related to horticulture studies, turf grass management, natural resources management or environmental sciences at a two or more year accredited college or university. They must have successfully completed a minimum of 30 semester units, with a minimum of 15 semester units of coursework from a field of study related to the environment. Applicants must be a full-time student with a minimum of 12 credits per semester and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Each of the four finalists will receive $1,000 and one of the finalists will also receive an additional $1,000 after a final review from the Barona Scholarship Selection Committee comprised of representatives from the Barona Band of Mission Indians and Barona Resort & Casino.
