Southwestern College Unveils Major Construction Program

Officials at Southwestern College on Monday unveiled plans for a major construction project — the largest new development since the college was constructed in 1961 — that will include more classrooms, a state-of-the-art bookstore and a community and civic center for the city of Chula Vista. “This is our legacy to this community,” said Raj K. Chopra, superintendent/president of the college.  “This development will allow us to create jobs for our residents, offer more classes to our students and further our college’s reputation as a center of civic engagement and culture.” The development will be located on the college’s corner lot at East H Street and Otay Lakes Road and is expected to generate dozens of construction jobs.

The Southwestern College governing board selected BCA Architects to complete the corner lot’s architectural design. The 110,000-square-foot project will include a new college bookstore, classroom space, food court, art gallery, culinary arts program, wellness center, administrative offices, conference space and police station. BCA will gather student and community input as it moves toward a final design. Funding for the project is made available by Proposition R, which South County voters approved in November 2008.

“The proposed Southwestern College Corner Lot design supports the current and future needs of the college by meeting the established goals of linking the seven-acre parcel of land to the campus and to the local community while creating a significant entry statement for the college,” said Paul C. Bunton, founding principal of BCA Architects.  “The design recognizes the importance of respecting the Mayan Revival style of the existing campus while drawing from the more traditional Mayan architecture and reinterpreting it in a contemporary and sustainable manner through the introduction of natural stone.”

The project will seek the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for sustainable features.

Delinquent Tax Notices Are on the Way

County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister is sending out 60,331 delinquency notices to taxpayers who have not paid either of their installments of their property taxes. McAllister said more than $201 million is still owed in back taxes by those who have not paid this year. “I am happy to report that we will be issuing 11,147 fewer notices this year,” said McAllister.  “This is a great sign for our economy and for our taxpayers.  We are currently at a 95.5 percent collection rate and hope to receive more tax payments in the coming weeks before the June 30 deadline.” Those who don’t meet that deadline face an additional penalty of 1.5 percent per month or 18 percent per year added to their tax bill.

Property owners requesting a reassessment of their property are still required to pay the amount that was printed on their tax bill statement.  If they are granted a lower assessment, a refund will be issued. Payments can be made by calling toll free at (877) 829-4732, paying online at www.sdtreastax.com or in person at offices located at 1600 Pacific Highway, Room 162 in San Diego; 200 South Magnolia in El Cajon; and 141 E. Carmel Street in San Marcos.

Grubb & Ellis Adds Vice President

Paul O’Boyle has joined Grubb & Ellis Co. as senior vice president focusing on investment sales and court-appointed receivership assignments. O’Boyle has 20 years of experience in the commercial real estate field. He was previously with Commercial Realty Advisers Inc., McComic Consolidated/Transwest Housing Inc., Keith International Inc. and Carlson Technologies Inc. He began his career in 1989 as a development planner and project manager with the city of San Diego. O’Boyle holds a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University, a doctorate from USD and an M.B.A. from USC.

Innovive Inc. to Move to UTC

Innovive Inc., a San Diego company manufacturing disposable rodent housing, has signed a five-year, $1.8 million sublease for 43,875 square feet of industrial space at 9689 Towne Centre Drive in San Diego 92121. Innovive will move its corporate headquarters, currently located at 8262 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., to the UTC location in June in order to accommodate future growth. The sublessor, Ametek Programmable Power, was represented by Sean Williams and Eric A. Northbrook of Cushman & Wakefield. The sublessee, which will occupy the entire building, represented itself. Innovive also will use the building for the manufacturing and distribution of disposable rodent housing.

Community Development Specialists in Program

Several expert on community development will share their successes and best practices at a May 26 program sponsored by the Local Initiatives Support Corp. and the city of San Diego. It will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Jo and Vi Jacobs Center, 404 Euclid Ave., San Diego. Speakers will include Mayor Jerry Sanders; Bill Anderson, director of planning and community development for the city; Joe Horiye, executive director of Local Initiatives Support Corp.; and representative from development programs in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Indianapolis.

Cymer Opens Office in Santa Clara

San Diego-based Cymer Inc., a supplier of light sources used by chipmakers to create advanced semiconductor chips, announced the opening of a Silicon Valley office in Santa Clara. With the expansion, Cymer will have access to the extensive talent pool at several global technology companies and from the area’s universities, company officials said. “Our new multi-functional Silicon Valley office is a strategic addition to Cymer’s global operation, allowing us to continue to fuel our growth and tap into the area’s rich talent base, while further strengthening our access to local semiconductor leaders and other technology partners,” said Ed Brown, president and chief operating officer.  Cymer Silicon Valley is located at 3295 Scott Blvd. in Santa Clara.
