40 Under 40 Nominations
Nominations are now open for San Diego Metropolitan Magazine’s 11th annual 40 Under 40 awards. The nomination period ends May 31. Central Courthouse Plans to be Presented on May 18
The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) will give a May 18 presentation on the new $633.9 million San Diego Central Courthouse project, a development that will replace the County Courthouse, the Family Courthouse and the Madge Bradley Courthouse in Downtown San Diego. The public will be given the opportunity to comment on the project and its potential environmental effects. The presentation will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Downtown Information Center, 193 Horton Plaza, above the CVS Pharmacy. The AOC has started preparing an environmental impact report that is to be offered for public review this summer. The buildings that would be supplanted by the project have been found to be unsafe, overcrowded, and inadequate for modern court operations. Construction costs will be funded by Senate Bill 1407, which finances critically needed courthouse construction, renovation, and repair through a portion of judicial branch fees, fines and penalties.
Leadership-Education Conference Set by Project Management Institute
Gene Kranz, the NASA flight control director instrumental in the 1970 rescue of Apollo 13, will lead off the seventh annual Project Management Institute’s leadership and education conference May 12-14 in San Diego. Kranz, author of “Failure is Not An Option,” will deliver an address during the conference kickoff May 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park. Also speaking that evening will be Deborah Alderson of Science Applications International Corp. On May 13 and 14, the conference moves to the Handlery Hotel and will feature a variety of speakers. John G. Stenbeck, president of Project Management Institute’s San Diego chapter, said the Air & Space Museum was instrumental in bringing Krantz to the conference, and at an appropriate time, the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission. DPR Construction Finishes Regional Headquarters
DPR Construction has finished building its new, 24,000-square-foot regional headquarters in University City an is pursuing Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy Environmental Design (LEED) program. DPR estimates it will reduce the building’s energy consumption by 53 percent and that an outdoor view will be enjoyed in 90 percent of the office. To generate as much power as the building consumes, a 64 kilowatt AC photovoltaic system was installed. The solar panels are expected to produce enough power to offset the building’s energy consumption, annually. Other sustainable features include new preferred parking for fuel-efficient vehicles, replacing the roof with an Energy Star product, diverting over 75 percent of construction waste from disposal in landfills, installing low-flow plumbing fixtures to decrease water usage 51 percent, modifying the existing irrigation to reduce landscape water usage by 60 percent and placing Dyson hand dryers in the bathrooms to decrease energy and waste from paper towels.
The DPR Construction project team was comprised of Elizabeth Barrie, Jeff Cole, Jerry McElfresh and Mark Seidl. Jonathan Wood of Seattle-based Callison served as the architect of the project. Other consultants and designers included KEMA for LEED consultation Hope Engineering for structural engineering, Latitude 33 Planning and Engineering for civil engineering, Howard Associates for landscape architecture, Bergelectric Corp. for electrical services and Pacific Rim Mechanical for plumbing and mechanical services.
First Business Bank Adds a Senior Vice President
Katherine Willey has joined First Business Bank as a senior vice president. Willey has more than 25 years of experience as a business development and lending officer. She has held senior business development and lending positions with 1st Pacific Bank of California, San Diego National Bank, Bank of Coronado and U.S. Bank. Willey received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree in finance from Marymount University in Arlington, Va. She is a board member and immediate past president of the Old Mission Rotary Club, treasurer and audit committee chair of Walden Family Services, past president of the Art Pratt Foundation and a graduate of LEAD San Diego.
Credit Union Offers Deposit Service From Home
Cabrillo Credit Union is offering its customers the ability to deposit checks from home using the Internet, computer and a scanner. The remote deposit service, called EZ Deposit, was launched this month and is the first financial institution in San Diego to have it, according to the credit union. Funds deposited through EZ Deposit are available immediately, sayd Robin Lentz, president and CEO.
