40 Under 40 Nominations

North Park Music Thing Prepares for Third Annual Festival
North Park’s growing reputation as a thriving arts, culture, music and dining destination will be enhanced again in August when the third annual North Park Musid Thing comes to the neighborhood. It will bring music industry professionals and performers together for a weekend of panel discussions, demo review sessions and live performances.
The annual music and media conference will be held at the historic Lafayette Hotel at 2223 El Cajon Blvd. on Aug. 13-14. A showcase of bands and individual musicians from across the Southwest will take place on Friday and Saturday nights at 14 San Diego venues. The live music showcases will follow daytime panel discussions on Friday afternoon and Saturday. “We’re excited to see North Park Music Thing build on the success of last year’s event,” said Kevin Hellman, president of the San Diego Music Foundation. “This year’s event will feature two nights of live music showcases following daytime panels led by music industry professionals from across the U.S. ”
The 2010 keynote speaker is music producer and songwriter Kim Fowley, who began his career in the music industry in the 1960s and has worked with the Byrds, Cat Stevens, Helen Reddy, The Plastic Ono Band, Alice Cooper, Kiss and Guns ‘n’ Roses. He also managed the all-girl band, The Runaways, in the 1970s.
Workshop discussions on Friday and Saturday will be led by panelists with experience in various areas of the music industry including engaging social media in promotions, breaking into the music business, music publishing, touring, hiring a manager, songwriting techniques, and more.
Proceeds from North Park Music Thing will be donated to the San Diego Music Foundation, which organizes the annual San Diego Music Awards show, recognizing the achievements of the local music community, and also encourages the next generation of musicians through its Taylor Guitars for Schools program, which has donated over 1,500 guitars to 61 elementary schools in San Diego County, which include guitar in their current music curriculum.

Consultant to be Sought for Balboa Park Centennial
The San Diego Tourism Marketing District has issued a Request for Proposal for a consultant to assist with the development and coordination of a host committee for the 2015 Balboa Park Centennial Celebration. “Our goal for this RFP is to address issues concerning the feasibility, organization and execution of the centennial celebration,” said Lorin Stewart, executive director of the TMD. “The 100-year anniversary of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition is a milestone of immense civic importance. It can be said that the events of 1915 put San Diego on the map as a world-class city. Recognizing the centennial of those events provides a platform to celebrate our rich cultural heritage on a magnitude that will once again attract world-wide attention. The TMD will provide the initial resources to help develop an effective management model and management team to implement the celebration.”
“This is a significant step forward in the planning of what will be a hallmark event for San Diego and will spur ongoing investment in Balboa Park,” said Councilman Todd Gloria, whose District 3 includes Balboa Park.
The Request for Proposal for a consultant seeks to contract with an individual to perform preliminary research that will result in the development of key guiding documents for the organization of a host committee and the articulation of a framing vision for the centennial celebration. A search committee of Balboa Park stakeholders will review the proposals and select a consultant who will have 90 days to complete work and submit recommendations. Scripps Pioneer Claude ZoBell to be Honored
The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) will honor Claude ZoBell, a marine microbiology pioneer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, at a May 22 tribute at Scripps Oceanography’s Sumner Auditorium, 8602 La Jolla Shores Drive, La Jolla. It is part of its week-long general meeting in San Diego. ASM President Roberto Kolter will present the plaque to Scripps Director Tony Haymet. The event is free and open to the public. Also during the event, Scripps Professor Emeritus Art Yayanos will speak about ZoBell’s research and Scripps Professor Farooq Azam will discuss the current state of marine microbiology. Members of ZoBell’s family, ASM representatives, local microbiologists and Scripps alumni will attend the event.
The San Diego Microbiology Group will host its annual meeting from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. which features a series of oral and poster presentations by local microbiologists working at Scripps Oceanography and elsewhere in Southern California in academia and in industry.
ZoBell collected the first bacteria brought back alive from the extreme ocean depths present in ocean trenches. He published nearly 300 scientific papers and, in 1976, founded the international Geomicrobiology Journal.
Navy/USMC Combat Operational Stress Control Conference
The Naval Center for Combat & Operational Stress Control will host the first Navy/USMC Combat Operational Stress Control Conference on May 18-20 at the Town & Country Resort and Convention Center. The conference will bring together subject matter-experts and stakeholders in the Navy and Marine Corps combat and operational stress control process. The attendees are to examine policies, programs and practices specifically tailored to sailors, Marines and their families. “Stress is not only a war-fighting issue, but an everyday military issue,” according to Navy Capt. Paul Hammer, director of the Naval Center for Combat & Operational Stress Control.” The conference is open to line leaders, chaplains, medical and mental health personnel, counselors, family members and others with interest in combat and operational stress control.
Medical Device Firm to be Issued Patents
SpectraScience Inc., a San Diego-based medical device company, announced today that it has been notified that two patents will be issued for its technology. Both patents are for an “optical biopsy system and methods for tissue diagnosis.” The patents will be issued by the Japanese Patent office and the European Patent office. The systems are for detecting pre-cancerous and cancerous tissue in the colon and cervix.
