2010 Law Week Celebration
Members of San Diego’s legal community will take part in Law Week activities and programs April 26-30 to educate the public about the law. For a description of each program, scroll to the end of this column.
San Diego Executives Featured at April 21 Panel Program
Higgs Fletcher & Mack and The Monger Company will sponsor an April 21 panel discussion — “Sharpen Your Competitive Edge in 2010” — featuring four San Diego executives. Panelists are Rob Lankford, president of Lankford & Associates; Larry Clemens, senior vice president of the San Diego Housing Commission; Tim Konold, partner with Higgs Fletcher & Mack; and Guy Asaro, president of McMillin Homes. They will discuss how they adapted their organizations to survive in today’s economy.
The program, which includes a lunch, will be held at the Hard Rock Hotel at 207 Fifth Ave. in Downtown San Diego. Check-in is at 11:30 a.m. and the lunch and program is at noon. Cost is $40. Cubic Defense Applications Forms Executive Advisory Board
Cubic Defense Applications Inc., the defense systems unit of Cubic Corp., has formed an executive advisory board to help the company evaluate growth opportunities, enter new markets and assess technology investments. Advisory board members are Adm. Vern Clark (retired), former Chief of Naval Operations; Roger Cressey, partner with Good Harbor Consulting LLC; Gen. William W. Hartzog (retired), former commander, Training and Doctrine Command, United States Army; Gen. Michael Hayden (retired), former director, Central Intelligence Agency/National Security Agency; Gen. William R. Looney III (retired), former commander, Air Education and Training Command, United States Air Force; Gen. Henry H. Shelton (retired), former chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff and commander, Special Operations Command, United States Army; Marty Winkler, former group vice president, Cubic Defense; and John J. Young Jr., former Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology & Logistics.
Groundbreaking for the Navy’s Child Development Center
Barnhart Balfour Beatty and the Navy will hold groundbreaking ceremonies on Monday for a new child development center at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. Speakers at the 2 p.m. event will include Capt. Yancy B. Lindsey, commanding officer of the base. The center will have the capacity to serve 286 children. Cost of the design and construction is $10.9 million. The center is expected to be completed by January 2011. Work is being done by Barnhart Balfour Beatty.
CADO Real Estate Group Selected as Condo Sales Manager
CADO Real Estate Group has been selected by D.R. Horton to manage the sales and marketing of the final phase of condominium homes at Seacliff in Oceanside. Sales of the remaining homes at the development, which offers views of both the Pacific Ocean and the city’s small-craft harbor and marina, will be under the guidance of Lori Asaro, senior vice president of CADO, and the onsite sales team of Barbara Wagar and John Melka. Wagar helped manage the sell-out of D.R. Horton’s Atlas condominiums in Downtown San Diego. She was awarded with a “Nationals’ Silver” award by the National Association of Home Builders as a member of one of the six best sales teams in the United States in 2009.

• T.B. Penick Selects Business Operations Manager — Steven J. Crawford, a 30-year construction industry veteran, has been named business operations manager for T.B. Penick & Sons Inc. Prior to joining T.B. Penick, Crawford served as vice president of operations, West Coast, for HBE Corp. Over the course of his career, he has worked in various capacities for Turner Construction, Howard S. Wright Construction in Seattle and Baker Concrete Construction. Since graduating from Penn State in 1979, he has worked throughout the country in a variety of management positions. Crawford has been involved with several high-profile projects such as Society Tower, Motorola CSG facility, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Jurassic Park at Universal Studios Florida. Other projects included the new launch pad for Delta IV Rockets at Cape Canaveral, major hotels and theme park work, schools, pharmaceutical, industrial, distribution centers and commercial offices.
• Entest BioMedical Hires Chief Financial Officer — Entest BioMedical Inc. has hired Tammy Reynolds as its new chief financial officer. Reynolds joins Entest BioMedical from Science Applications International Corp. She has an extensive background in mergers and acquisitions accounting, financial reporting, tax accounting, budgeting/forecasting and fixed asset reconciliation. Prior to working for SAIC, she was a senior accountant with Bruno Skorheim LLP. Reynolds holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from San Diego State and is a CPA.
• San Diego State Dean Selected as a National Commissioner — Bill Fornadel, associate dean for San Diego State’s College of Extended Studies, has been elected to serve as a national commissioner on the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) Commission on International Affairs. Fornadel previously served as the national chairman for UCEA’s 2010 Workforce Development Forum and as a commissioner on the UCEA Commission on Leadership and Management. Founded in 1915, UCEA (formerly the National University Continuing Education Association), is among the oldest college and university associations in the United States.
• USD Names Director of Media Relations — University of San Diego has selected Melissa Wagoner as its new director of media relations. Before moving to San Diego last October, Wagoner worked for nearly nine years on the staff of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. As Kennedy’s press secretary and spokeswoman, she worked on a range of national issues including education, health care, the military and energy and local issues pertaining to Massachusetts. Wagoner began teaching a class at USD in January. An adjunct in communications studies and political science, she teaches an undergraduate course titled “Politics and Media Inside the Beltway.” She holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a master’s degree from American University.
Editors Group to Focus on Fiction and Nonfiction Works
The editing of fiction and nonfiction works will be the focus of the May 20 meeting of the San Diego Professional Editors Network (SD/PEN) at 6:30 p.m. in the Joyce Beers Community Center in the Uptown Shopping Center in Hillcrest. Among the topics covered will be the guidelines, styles and templates employed for each genre; the different kinds of working relationships each editor has with clients; and how the authors, editors and companies work together effectively in the editing process. Sitting on the panel to discuss editing fiction will be Kathi George and Jed Lewis. George is the staff copy editor for ZYZZYVA, a San Francisco-based literary journal. She also taught copyediting at UCSD Extension for 10 years. Lewis started a small literary press, Laughing Fire Press, for which he has evaluated poetry, screenplays and manuscripts submitted for publication. Representing nonfiction editing on the panel will be Georganna Hancock and Sandra Chew Phillips. Hancock has been a staff reporter, book reviewer and stringer for a number of newspapers and has also been a featured freelance author for many publications. Phillips has held the position of staff technical writer at Qualcomm Inc. for 12 years and is currently writing and editing documentation for cell phone software. Tenant Improvements Completed for ATK Space Systems
Tenant improvements have been completed for the 59,300-square-foot industrial and manufacturing facility of ATK Space Systems, a San Diego-based aerospace and defense company located at 9617 Distribution Ave. Smith Consulting Architects provided tenant improvement documents and construction administration for the $5.9 million project. The Beary Group served as project manager, with Steven Beary providing project oversight. Johnson & Jennings General Contracting was the general contractor. Structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing system upgrades were made to the existing one-story, tilt-up concrete building. A 7,850-square-foot section of roof was raised to accommodate a bridge crane. Additionally, an 11,500-square-foot metal exterior canopy was added to shelter the tenant’s industrial equipment. Mark Langan served as vice president-in-charge for Smith Consulting Architects, with Jon Ohlson as senior project architect and Carl King as project manager. Dan Dickey was project manager for Johnson & Jennings General Contracting. GSSI Engineers was the structural engineer, Turpin & Rattan Engineering was the electrical engineer and McParlane & Associates was the mechanical engineer.
Smile Brands Leases Space in Palomar Plaza
Smile Brands Inc., dba Bright Now! Dental, has signed a 120-month, $1,219,050 lease for 3,150 square feet of retail space in Palomar Plaza, 752 South Rancho Santa Fe Road, in San Marcos. The lessee was represented by Ryan Rogers and Ron Pepper of Retail Insite. The lessor, VMA Palomar LLC, was represented by Nick Alford and Kam Walton of the Cushman & Wakefield Retail Advisors Team. Bright Now! Dental, a dental office, moved into its new space in February.
Parkinson’s 5K Walk and Run to be Held April 17
The annual Parkinson’s 5K Walk and Fun Run will be held April 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at Liberty Station in Point Loma. The event is sponsored by the Parkinson’s Disease Association of San Diego. Last year’s event raised more than $177,887 compared to $150,000 from the year before that. Half of the proceeds from the walk will stay in San Diego to support programs and services for local families. The balance goes to the American Parkinson Disease Association to be used exclusively for funding to support promising medical research seeking more effective treatments and a cure for the disease. Golden Watchdog & Golden Fleece Awards to be Presented May 20
The Golden Watchdog & Golden Fleece Awards dinner of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association will be held May 20 at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center’s Atlas Ballroom in Mission Valley. Award categories include the Golden Watchdog Award honoring good government practices and efficient use of public money; the Golden Fleece Award calling out wasteful, inefficient or absurd uses of taxpayer dollars; the Media Watchdog Award recognizing excellence in reporting on behalf of taxpayers; the Public-Private Partnership Award for cooperation between the public and private sectors, stretching taxpayer dollars. A cocktail reception will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the dinner and awards program is from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $150 for Taxpayer Association members and $200 for nonmembers. April 28: Youth Day in Court Job Shadow
Presented by the Superior Court and the District Attorney’s Office, this year’s Youth Day in Court will feature a “Law and Justice Job Shadow” program where high school students will join law students to “shadow” legal practitioners through a day in court where they will observe court proceedings as well as visit law offices.
April 29: “Ask-a-Lawyer”
Lawyer volunteers will answer various call-in questions from the public on a range of topics between 4 and 7 p.m. Attorneys will help callers discern between legal and non-legal problems, and direct them to various legal resources in San Diego County. April 29: Family Law Facilitators Program
Volunteer attorneys will provide free family law information at Family Court in South Bay from 9 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4:30 p.m., and at the Downtown Courthouse from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
April 30: SDCBA Annual Awards Luncheon
The annual Law Week luncheon will be held at The Westin Gaslamp in Horton Plaza from noon to 1:30 p.m. Along with celebrating the year’s various community service programs, the SDCBA’s 2010 Service Awards will be presented and winners of the SDCBA student poster and essay contests will be recognized. The 2010 Awards Luncheon and Celebration of Community Service is co-sponsored by GEICO, Law Firm Merchant Account and US Legal.
Children at Risk Book Drive
The SDCBA’s Children at Risk Committee will be holding its annual Book Drive during Law Week. The event will benefit the committee’s efforts to helping children in need. This year’s Book Drive will start on April 26 and will run through May 14. Members are encouraged to donate new or used books for children in kindergarten through grade 12.
