Chicano Federation Names New President and CEO
Arnulfo Manriquez, a 17-year veteran of the nonprofit sector, has been named president and CEO of the Chicano Federation of San Diego County. He will begin his new positionb on May 17, replacing Raymond Uzeta, who has been in the post for the past 20 years. During the last seven years, Manriquez has been the chief operating officer of the MAAC Project.
“Arnulfo offers a unique combination of experience and enthusiasm that will serve the Chicano Federation well into the future,” said Enrique Gonzalez, chair of the Chicano Federation board of directors. “As a first-generation immigrant who grew up in the San Diego community, Arnulfo understands the challenges faced by underrepresented communities. He is also a Chicano Federation success story as he is a graduate of the Federation’s Latino Training Institute, class of 1994. He is truly committed to social justice and ensuring that opportunities for self-sufficiency exist for low-income households and individuals.”
Manriquez has served on the San Diego Housing Federation board for the past six years and is the immediate past president. He also served as co-chair of ACCoRD (A Community Coalition for Responsible Development), board member of Urban Council Development Inc. and mentor for the Puente Program at Southwestern College.
The youngest of five children, Manriquez was born in Mexicali and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1981, when he was 10 years old. Now a U.S. citizen, he grew up in San Ysidro and Chula Vista and graduated from Hilltop High School. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in urban studies and planning from UCSD and a master of arts degree in leadership and nonprofit management from USD. He also holds a certificate in fund-raising management from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.
Nokia to Move into Summit Rancho Bernardo
Nokia has leased the newly constructed, 196,742-square-foot office tower at Summit Rancho Bernardo and plans to move into the building in September. The five-story Class A office tower is the first new building to be developed in the 105-acre Summit Rancho Bernardo project and has been given a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The tower is at 16620 W. Bernardo Road. Brent Wright and Chris Pascale of CB Richard Ellis represented the lessor, Jay Paul Company. Doug Lozier, also of CB Richard Ellis, represented Nokia. The Summit Rancho Bernardo campus has more than 900,000 square feet of industrial flex and office space and is the former home of high-tech companies including Hewlett Packard and Sony.
Affordable Housing Project Planned for Otay Mesa-Nestor
Affirmed Housing Group on Friday will celebrate the groundbreaking of Riverwalk Apartments, a 50-unit affordable housing development in the Otay Mesa-Nestor community. The 10 a.m. ceremony will include remarks by Mayor Jerry Sanders. The project will have 19 one-bedroom units, 10 two-bedroom units and 21 three-bedroom units on 2.6 acres. Amenities will include two t ot lots and barbeque areas, onsite laundry, a community room and computer lab. Riverwalk will provide restoration of a sensitive habitat in Nestor Creek, allowing for the continuation of a pedestrian trail that will eventually link Hollister Street to Coronado Avenue.
Grants Awarded for Cleanup of Brownfield Sites
The San Diego Redevelopment Agency has been awarded two grants from the Environmental Protection Agency to inventory and clean up and redevelop brownfield sites. Each grant is $200,000. The agency applied for the grants in partnership with SEDC, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation and Price Charities and will focus on brownfield sites owned by these entities, plus other sites with willing property owners. The project partners will concentrate on sites within City Heights (commercial corridors along El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue), the Village at Market Creek (along the Euclid Avenue/Market Street corridor), and sections of southeastern San Diego.
A brownfield site is generally defined as property in which the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or perceived presence of hazardous substances, pollutants, contaminants and/or petroleum products due to current or previous land uses.
Founder of Center for Teaching Peace to Speak at USD
Colman McCarthy, a former syndicated columnist for The Washington Post and the founder of The Center for Teaching Peace, will address students and the San Diego community at the University of San Diego on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Theatre on campus. McCarthy will address students from the Kroc School for Peace Studies and the School of Education and Leadership Services, in addition to interested members of the USD community and the general public. He will discuss the importance of peace education in addressing school violence and in preparing citizens to build a civil, nonviolent global society. McCarthy currently teaches at Georgetown University Law Center, American University, the University of Maryland, the Washington Center for Interns and two public high schools. USD also will announce that beginning in 2011, a graduate certificate in peace education will be offered at the university through the School of Leadership and Education Sciences and Kroc School of Peace Studies.
Veterans Job Fair to be held June 5
A Veterans Job and Resource Fair will be staged June 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Veterans Museum & Memorial Center at 2115 Park Blvd. in San Diego under sponsorship of the National Defense Industry Association and the United Veterans Council. While most organizations conduct job fairs on weekdays, the Veterans Job & Resource Fair occurs on Saturdays in order to attract job seekers, including active-duty members, who may not be able to attend on a weekday. Previous Veterans Job & Resource Fairs have attracted between 70 and 110 employers/vendors and more than 1,000 job seekers. In addition to veteran-friendly employers, vendors include veterans’ service organizations, the Veterans Administration, the California Department of Veterans Affairs, educational institutions and various veterans’ service providers. Registration includes a continental breakfast for one and admittance to a post-event reception. Attendees can order a box lunch. Vendors can order additional breakfasts and lunches for multiple attendees. Sponsorships include multiple meals. An opening ceremony will be held at 8:55 a.m.
