Small Businesses Sought for Lindbergh Field’s $1 Billion Upgrade
The agency that owns and operates Lindbergh Field says it will be hiring as many small construction businesses as possible for the major upgrade taking place at the airport’s Terminal 2. Project coordinators are mounting a campaign to ensure that contractors are aware of the opportunity to be part of the project and the process for getting involved, according to Bob Silvas, director of small business development for the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “We’re strongly committed to bringing as many small businesses as possible into The Green Build and help them get the invaluable experience that comes from working on such a high-profile project,” said Silvas. The Green Build is a three-year, $1 billion construction project that will bring major upgrades to San Diego International Airport. When work is completed in 2013, the airport will have 10 new gates, additional shopping and dining and a dual-level roadway to reduce curb congestion by providing separate areas for arriving and departing passengers.
Even for large, highly experienced firms, bidding on major government projects can be challenging, but airport officials said they are prepared to help smaller companies navigate the complex process. Beginning in mid-May and continuing throughout the next year, the Airport Authority will hold a series of informational events for interested businesses.
“These events will take place throughout San Diego County to help small businesses learn about the opportunities we’re offering and how they can get involved,” Silvas said. “We have developed resources to provide both online and hands-on training to help small businesses register, pre-qualify, and bid on construction packages geared toward small contractors. Many small local construction firms are overwhelmed with the government contracting process, so we want to make sure that we help by providing the training and guidance needed to make it easier for them to get through the process.”
Silvas said The Green Build team also is developing a grassroots and media campaign designed to reach the small business community and give them the information they need to bid on the available construction jobs. Contractors will be contacted through e-mail, direct mail, local print media and industry organizations. Special efforts will be directed toward firms that qualify as Disadvantaged Business Enterprises. “The Green Build is already a great stimulus for San Diego’s economy,” Silvas said. “We want to make sure that we are extending those opportunities to our small contracting community as well.” More information is available at san.org/greenbuild.

Barona Tribal Government Building Receives LEED Certification
The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded LEED Silver certification to the Barona Band of Mission Indians’ new, 35,412-square-foot, two-story tribal government building. The building was designed by Atlanta-based Baker Barrios Architects Inc. and built by Swinerton Builders of San Diego The building was designed to be ranked with the most sustainable governmental buildings in the nation, according to John Boggs, senior associate with Baker Barrios Architects.
Several design and construction features contributed to the LEED certification. Barona received points in Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation and Design. By using a centralized mechanical plant, air cooled chiller, computerized controls for heating and air conditioning in 48 separate locations and motion sensor lights that adjust to natural lighting, the building reduces energy by about 14 percent. It also reduces water use by 40 to 50 percent with its low flow fixtures and drought-resistant plants, drip irrigation and minimal planting areas. During the building phase, construction waste was reduced by 75 percent by reusing and recycling building construction materials. The building itself is composed of 20 percent regional materials as well as low-emitting paint, carpet, adhesives, wood, insulation fiber and sealants.
Barona’s environmental sustainability program on the Barona Indian Reservation includes the Barona Resort & Casino and Barona Creek Golf Club. The program includes a water reclamation plant, water recovery program, landscaping and wildlife preservation, golf course turf reduction, resort conservation programs – carpooling, recycling and energy efficient practices – and community outreach to increase awareness of eco-friendly events and programs.
Platformic Hires Director of Business Development
Platformic, a San Diego-based Web development company, has hired Greg Gossler as director of business development. Gossler will be responsible for developing and executing the sales strategy for the software platform provider. He has 18 years of experience in the industry and formerly was director of monetization for Convera. He also held the position of director of sales and product management at CACI Products Co. Gossler holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and sales from Arizona State University.
Author Presentation: ‘Why Chinese Women Are Not Broke’
Giovanna Pang Garcia, author of “Why Chinese Women are not Broke,” will share the secrets of how she and 100 of America’s most successful Chinese-American women have achieved success at two upcoming free presentations and book signings. She will be featured at 7:30 p.m. on May 12 at Warwick’s Books, 7812 Girard Ave., La Jolla. On May 13, Garcia will appear at Art Expressions Gallery in conjunction with an exhibition by Chinese contemporary artist Jian Wang. Class B Building Sold for $2.92 Million
Mesa Rim Associates has purchased a 21,530-square-foot Class B office and R&D building in Sorrento Mesa for $2.92 million. The seller was Kroeze Koncepts Inc. The one-story building was constructed in 1985. In the transaction, Pat Rohan and Sean Williams of Cushman & Wakefield represented the seller. The buyer was represented by Debbi Houshar of Avalar San Diego.
