Neil Ash USO Center at Airport Temporarily Relocated
The Neil Ash USO Center at San Diego International Airport has been temporarily relocated to the west end of Terminal 1 because of the major renovation of Terminal 2. The building that housed the USO center is to be demolished, but the center will be replaced by a 10,000-square-foot facility — making it the largest USO Center in the country.
The temporary, relocated facility, between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 and accessible from the curb, will continue to offer active and retired military and their families services such as free Internet access, a game room, televisions, refreshments, lounge, baggage storage, showers and a children’s play room. The temporary center will be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to midnight. When completed, the new USO Center at Terminal 2 will provide military and their families with 3,000 additional square feet of space, a new outdoor area with picnic tables and grassy areas for relaxing and many other amenities. It will open in early 2013.
“More than 100,000 service members and their families travel through the Neil Ash USO Center each year,” said Thella F. Bowens, president and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “We are honored to continue to serve San Diego’s military community though the construction of this USO Center while the permanent facility is being built.”
San Diego Marketing Firms Merge
What does Lemonade Public Relations mix well with? That would be The PR Mavens. The two San Diego marketing communications firms have merged, creating Scatena Daniels Communications Inc. (scatenadaniels.com).
The founding partners are Denise Scatena (founder of Lemonade Public Relations), and Arika Anderson (founder and principal of The PR Mavens). They’re combining their pre-existing clients with three new ones — ElderHelp of San Diego, the Park-2-Park shuttle service and Promeses2Kids.
“Arika and I worked together on many projects over time and realized our philosophies, work ethic and professional goals were well aligned, making it an easy transition,” said Scatena. “Merging to form Scatena Daniels Communications will allow us to expand our offerings, as well as work on larger projects.”
ElderHelp chose the firm to create awareness of its Concierge Club, a program that offers in-home care services for local seniors. The Park-2-Park shuttle is a low-cost transportation service connecting the communities of North Park, South Park, University Heights and Normal Heights to be launched April 22. Promises2Kids (formerly the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation), is a nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of child abuse through prevention, education and advocacy.

• Francisco Anzar has purchased a 2,515-square-foot office building at 2780 Imperial Ave. in San Diego for $380,000. The seller was U.S. Bank National. Steve Malley of Lee & Associates San Diego represented the seller and buyer in the transaction.
• Phamatech Incorporated, a provider of rapid medical diagnostic devices for home health care and clinics, has signed a five-year, $2,197,797 lease renewal for 48,880 square feet of industrial space at 10151 Barnes Canyon Road in San Diego. The company has been located in the building since 2003 and uses the space for manufacturing. The lessee was represented by David Crabb of CB Richard Ellis. The lessor, GBB LLC, was represented by Mickey Morera and James Duncan of Cushman & Wakefield.
Seminar to Explore Succession Management
SDSU’s College of Extended Studies will present a training and development seminar, “Succession Management: Identifying and Developing Leaders in Times of Crisis” on April 9 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in the SDSU Extended Studies Center, 5701 Hardy Ave. The program will explore how effective leaders ensure short- and long-term goals by leading innovation and change, managing succession, and looking at strategic initiatives. Girl Scouts to Honor ‘San Diego’s 10 Cool Women of 2010’
The San Diego-Imperial Council of Girl Scouts will honor 10 women for professional and community accomplishments at an April 3 luncheon aboard the Holland America Line’s ms Oosterdam at the San Diego waterfront. The “San Diego’s 10 Cool Women of 2010” awards will start with registration at 10 a.m. The suggested donation of $100 includes a reception, meal, program and self-guided tour of the ship. Recycle Your Outdated Tax Files
Outdated tax files can be recycled April 9-17 at the Miramar Recycling Center, 5165 Convoy St. The eighth annual “Tax File Recycling” is sponsored by the city of San Diego and the Allen Co. Allan Co. will provide secure containers at the Miramar Recycling Center for residents to drop off old files, which are securely stored and shredded before being recycled. “Recyclable paper continues to be a large percentage of all waste buried in the Miramar Landfill,” said Chris Gonaver, director of the Environmental Services Department. “The city now accepts bagged, shredded paper through our curbside recycling program. For those residents without curbside collection or home paper shredders, this confidential recycling service ensures that all San Diego residents have a safe alternative for recycling their tax files.”
Sleepover to be Held to Raise Homelessness Awareness
The San Diego Rescue Mission will host the fourth annual “Sleepless San Diego” on April 24-25, an all-night event to raise awareness of homelessness. Several other agencies also are participating. The event will be held at Liberty Station in Point Loma, on Historic Decatur Road. An expo fair will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday and the sleepout will be from 3 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. on Sunday. Private security will be in place continuously throughout the night.
