Employers Plan Modest Hiring Pace

Employers in San Diego, Carlsbad and San Marcos expect to hire at a modest pace during the second quarter, according to the Manpower Employmen Outlook Survey. “Hiring levels in our area appear to be slightly stronger compared with last quarter when the Net Employment Outlook was 2 percent,” said Manpower spokesperson Phil Blair. “In addition, employers are more optimistic about hiring activity as compared with one year ago, when the Net Employment Outlook was -3 percent.”

From April to June, 15 percent of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 11 percent expect to reduce their payrolls. Another 68 percent expect to maintain their current staff levels and 6 percent are not certain of their hiring plans. This yields a Net Employment Outlook of 4 percent. For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in Wholesale & Retail Trade, Professional & Business Services and Government. Employers in Transportation & Utilities and Education & Health Services plan to reduce staffing levels, while hiring in Construction, Durable Goods Manufacturing, Nondurable Goods Manufacturing, Financial Activities, Leisure & Hospitality and Other Services is expected to remain unchanged.

LifeCare Solutions Extends Lease and Expands Space

LifeCare Solutions Inc. has signed a five-year, $2,576,558 lease extension and expansion that increases its space in Scripps Ranch Business Center to 35,840 square feet within the 157,891-square-foot industrial park located on Carroll Canyon Road in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego. LifeCare Solutions previously occupied 4,400 square feet at 10115 – 10119 Carroll Canyon Road and now occupies the entire building. The extension and expansion, along with a recent lease signed by Chassis Plans for 23,000 square feet, brings the H.G. Fenton Co.-owned and managed project to 100 percent occupied. Tracie Allen, human resources director with LifeCare Solutions, said the company will utilize the additional space for the creation of new offices and cubicles which will accommodate its recent hirings, as well as its future growth. H.G. Fenton Co. has completed tenant improvements on LifeCare Solutions’ new space and the company began utilizing the entire facility in February. In the transaction, LifeCare Solutions was represented by Jeff Saywitz of The Saywitz Co.  H.G. Fenton Company was represented by Bill Dolan of CB Richard Ellis.

Goodwill Industries Signs $1.5 Million Lease

Goodwill Industries of San Diego County has signed a 120-month, $1,507,620 lease for 9,350 square feet of retail space in Imperial Beach Promenade at 880 Palm Ave., Imperial Beach. The lessee was represented by Bryan Cunningham of the Cushman & Wakefield Retail Advisors Team. Dan Malcolm of Malcolm Properties represented the lessor, Imperial Beach Promenade LLC. Other tenants of Imperial Beach Promenade include CVS, IB Vision Care, San Diego Nutrition and San Ysidro Health Center.

Real Estate Sales

James Burnett purchased 6,000 square feet of office space at 550 Lomas Santa Fe in Solana Beach from Donald J. Moore, Seymour Myers Trust and Jack A. Reingold for $2.7 million. Matt Campbell and Peter Curry of Cassidy Turley BRE Commercial represented the seller in the transaction. Mike Foster of Foster & Co. represented the buyer.

Dr. Mace Richter purchased 4,351 square feet of office and retail space at 236 Jamacha Road, Suite 102, in El Cajon, from Monkey Belly Properties LP for $699,000. Brian Jinings of Cassidy Turley BRE Commercial represented the seller in the transaction. Jonathan Gerson of Gerson Property Management represented the buyer.

Corder Family Emeryville Properties LP purchased 4,214 square feet of retail space at 3095 Honey Hill Ranch in Alpine from Alpine East Village LLC for $675,000. Brian Jinings and Brent Williams of Cassidy Turley BRE Commercial represented the seller in the transaction. Dawn Leahy of Coldwell Banker Residential represented the buyer.

Grossmont College Nurses Get Fast Track to 4-Year Degree

Grossmont College and Grand Canyon University in Phoenix have agreed to a transfer agreement that will provide an accelerated path to a bachelor’s degree in nursing for Grossmont College nursing graduates. The agreement is the first of its kind in the state between a California community college and a private university, according to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. Under the agreement, Grossmont nursing students can begin earning their bachelor’s degree starting in their final semester, as of the fall 2010 semester. Grand Canyon’s bachelor’s degree in nursing, accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, is a 16-month, online program for working adult learners and will cost roughly $14,000. Grossmont students will be eligible for scholarships if they maintain a 3.0 grade-point-average while enrolled in Grand Canyon classes. Karilyn Van Oosten, senior executive director of university development at Grand Canyon University, said her institution accepted Grossmont’s entire general education package without adding extra degree requirements.

Community Managers Elected to State Board

Community managers Vicki MacHale of the Prescott Cos. in Carlsbad, Cherié McColley of Menas Realty Co. in Chula Vista and Melinda Young of Walters Management in San Diego have been elected to the 2010 board of directors for the California Association of Community Managers (CACM). The board is responsible for CACM’s programs and activities, monitors legal and legislative issues and upholds the association’s code of ethics and standards of practice. The group also advises CACM on its educational and certification program for community association managers.

PROVEN Launches Human Resources Practice

Staffing firm PROVEN announced the opening of its Human Resources Practice and the appointment of Morgan Krumb as the unit’s senior partner. Krumb, former director of human resources at 24 Hour Fitness, also joins the company’s executive committee. The HR practice will staff a variety of positions that will include HR generalists, internal recruiters, benefits and compensation specialists, training personnel and HRIS professionals. The practice will also provide specialist HR consulting services in the areas of HR department startups, compensation and benefits, compliance, organizational change and HRIS implementation. “The creation of an HR practice solidifies our existing relationships and provides the basis for an entirely new and, we believe, under leveraged revenue stream,” said Louis Song, joint managing partner and CEO of the company.

Algebraix Data Corp. Appoints Vice Chairman

John Mutch, a 25-year veteran of the software industry, has been appointed vice chairman and member of the board of directors of Algebraix Data Corp. in San Diego. Mutch is currently CEO of BeyondTrust Software and has previously been CEO of HNC Software and Peregrine Systems. He also has served on the boards of Adaptec, Edgar Online, Aspyra, Overland Storage and Brio Software. He began his career at Microsoft Corp., where he led marketing in the 1980s. Prior to joining BeyondTrust as CEO in 2008, Mutch was a founder and managing partner of MV Advisors LLC, an investment firm. Before MV Advisors, he was appointed by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to the board of Peregrine Systems and then elected as CEO. His restructuring of Peregrine culminated in a sale to HP for $425 million in 2005.

West Wireless Health Institute Appoints CEO

Donald Casey, former worldwide chairman of Johnson and Johnson’s Comprehensive Care group, has been named CEO of the West Wireless Health Institute. The institute was founded in 2009 with a $45 million gift from the Gary and Mary West Foundation. It is a medical research organization aimed at cutting health care costs through wireless technologies. Gary West is chairman of the institute board. Casey will work with Eric J. Topol, the institute’s chief medical officer and a member of the board, to identify opportunities for clinical trials and other medical research activities.

Black & White Ball to Benefit Conner’s Cause for Children

The San Diego chapter of the Association of Corporate Council will stage the ninth annual Black & White Ball on March 13 to benefit Conner’s Cause for Children, an Encinitas-based nonprofit that provides financial assistance to families caring for children with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses or injury. Each year, Conner’s Cause serves over 300 families in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties. The event will start with a reception and silent auction beginning at 6 p.m. and dinner and live auction starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Douglas Pavilion of the Manchester Grand Hyatt in Downtown San Diego. Dancing and casino games will follow. The cost is $100 to ACC members and $200 to nonmembers. The Black & White Ball is underwritten by a number of large and small San Diego law firms as well as a handful of legal industry service providers
