Health Care Panel Talk Scheduled Tonight

“The Changing Landscape of Healthcare” is the topic of a panel talk tonight sponsored by the Southern California Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association from 5 to 8:30 p.m. in Otterson Hall of the Rady School of Management at UCSD. The panel will explore changes in the health care industry. Panelists will be Lynn Nye, president of Medical Minds Healthcare Communications, the moderator; Aaron Byzak, director of government affairs for UCSD Health Sciences; Claudia Graham, vice president of marketing for DexCom; Teri Louden, president of The Louden Network; Alan Portela, president of CliniComp International; and Ajit Raisinghani, a cardiologist and associate professor of medicine at UCSD. YWCA Fundraiser to Feature Best-Selling Author

“In the Company of Women,” the largest annual fundraiser for the YWCA of San Diego County, will be held March 11 and will feature a keynote address by Leslie Morgan Steiner, author of “Crazy Love,” a memoir about domestic violence, and “Mommy Wars,” an anthology that explores the polarization between stay-at-home and career mothers in the United States. Registration is at 11:15 a.m. at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel at 1380 Harbor Island Drive, San Diego. Tickets are $120 apiece. All of the contributions support the YWCA’s programs and services for San Diego’s women and children who are survivors of domestic violence and homelessness, including Becky’s House. Meeting Set for Barrio Logan Community Plan Update

A panel discussion of the Barrio Logan community plan update — the first in a series — will be held Feb. 25 from 7:30 to 9:15 a.m. in the Harborside Room of the Holiday Inn Embarcadero, 1355 North Harbor Drive in Downtown San Diego. The discussion will focus on the planning process and the roles of the city and citizens. Panelists include Vicki Estrada of Estrada Land Planning; Lara Gates, from the city of San Diego; Georgette Gomez of the Environmental Health Coalition; and Lee Wilson from the Continental Maritime and Working Waterfront Group. Martin Flores of Rick Engineering will serve as moderator. Cost for the continental breakfast and program is $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Cost at the door is $35 for all. Education Coordinator Chosen for Parkinson’s Disease Association

Sara E. Parra has accepted the position of education coordinator for the Parkinson’s Disease Association of San Diego. Parra previously was the manager of United Way of San Diego’s Community Impact. Parra will be responsible for creating the association’s newsletter, the “Parkinson Post,” as well as facilitating the Good Start Program and Financial & Legal Wellbeing workshop series. Parra also will represent the organization on various community committees and will be the voice patients and families hear when they call regarding educational programs and services.

Don Coryell to Receive Honorary Doctorate from SDSU

Don Coryell, former football head coach of the SDSU Aztecs and former coach of the Chargers, will receive an honorary doctorate degree from the university during commencement ceremonies in May. “Don Coryell is a true Aztec treasure and we are honored to have the opportunity to award him with this honorary degree,” said Joyce Gattas, dean of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts. Charles W. Hostler, former U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain, also will be given an honorary doctorate at the event. Coryell, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, led San Diego State to two undisputed national championships and shared a third title. Following his career at San Diego State, Coryell went on to enjoy success as the Chargers head coach for 13 seasons, reaching the playoffs six times and winning five division titles.

San Diego Christian Film Festival to be Held at SDSU

The first San Diego Christian Film Festival has been scheduled for Dec. 27-30 at the Performing Arts Plaza at SDSU and the host, Glass Sea Productions, is calling for submissions, volunteers and potential sponsors.

“We expect the San Diego Christian Film Festival to have over 5,000 attendees, infusing an estimated $1 million into the economy,” said Richard Bagdazian, executive director of Glass Sea Productions. “Glass Sea Productions is a group of local filmmakers, marketing professionals and business people dedicated to bringing good film to light,” said Bagdazian, former president of the San Diego Screenwriters Association. 

In January, Glass Sea Productions unveiled the festival Website (sdchristianfilmfestival.com) with the goal of making it easy for filmmakers, volunteers and sponsors to have the latest festival information.
