Nonprofits Squeezed for Funds as Service Demands Rise

San Diego County nonprofit organizations are suffering a loss of revenues at the same time they are receiving increased demands for service, according to a report by UCSD’s Caster Family Center for Nonprofit Research. The just-published study is titled “Operating in Uncertain Times—How the Current Economic Conditions Have Affected San Diego County’s Nonprofit and Philanthropic Sectors.”

The report portrays a nonprofit sector that has been severely stretched in order to meet increased demand for services, while at the same time a sector that is realizing decreased revenue for operations. Many local nonprofit organizations, the report said, also have been adversely impacted by an ongoing state budget crisis. “Despite all this, the nonprofit organizations that participated in the study are finding ways to keep up in these challenging times,” the report says. “A majority are simply doing more with less, while some nonprofits are using resources in new and innovative ways.”

“Overall,” the report says, “the findings from this report demonstrate that San Diego’s nonprofit sector — on the whole — remains in a fragile position that demands attention.”

Key findings:

• Eighty-nine percent of charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofits and 100 percent of foundations that participated in the study felt that the recession had a negative impact on their organization.

• As a result of changing economic conditions, 58 percent of nonprofits reported an increase in demand for services.

• Two-thirds of nonprofits reported decreases in revenue of up to 30 percent.

• Primary tactics for offsetting decreased revenue for nonprofits include staff layoffs, hiring and pay freezes, and cuts to pay and benefits.

• Forty-two percent of responding nonprofits reported using reserves to cover budget shortfalls.

• Only one-third of nonprofits have more than 6 months of operating reserves set aside.

• The ongoing state budget crisis has impeded nonprofits from providing services.

• On average, foundations reported decreased assets ranging from 10-30 percent.

The study includes data from a December 2009 survey of 125 of San Diego’s largest charitable nonprofit organizations and philanthropic foundations.

South Bay Harbor Cleanup Set for Jan. 31

San Diego Coastkeeper will host the South Bay Harbor Cleanup on Sunday, Jan. 31, at Marina View Park, 200 Marina Parkway, in Chula Vista. The event will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and is made possible by a grant of $15,000 to Coastkeeper from the Port of San Diego’s environmental fund. The grant helped fund Coastkeeper’s Marine Debris program, which consists of four cleanups in South Bay. The prior three cleanups helped remove 1,408 pounds of debris from Paradise Creek, Emory Cove and Chollas Creek. Volunteers at the cleanup will be asked to keep a tally of all the debris they remove while participating in the cleanup. The cards are used to quantify the data. The Port of San Diego’s environmental fund was established in June 2006 to finance environmental projects that go beyond state and federal compliance. Each year one-half of 1 percent of the Port’s total earnings is set aside for this fund, about $600,000. Cleanup participants are asked to wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen. Coastkeeper will provide bags, gloves and water. Each person must fill out a liability waiver before participating. Persons under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver.
