Marketplace Ethics Awards to be Presented Dec. 8

The San Diego Better Business Bureau will present its 12th annual Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics on Dec. 8 at a luncheon at the Town and Country Resort Hotel, 500 Hotel Circle North, in Mission Valley. The program, open to the public, honors companies that demonstrate ethical business practices. Keynote speaker will be Holly Petraeus, director of the BBB’s Military Line program and the wife of Army Gen. David Petraeus, who served as head of the U.S. Central Command and commander in Iraq. Mayor Sanders will introduce Petraeus. The emcee will be George Chamberlin, business editor with News Radio 600 KOGO.

Sempra Energy is the presenting sponsor of the 2009 awards. Also at the luncheon, Sycuan Casino will honor five students who wrote outstanding 400-word essays on the importance of marketplace ethics and integrity. A table of eight seats is priced at $600 and single-seat tickets are $75 apiece. Reservations can be made through the BBB office by phoning (858) 637‑6199.

Stedman & Dyson Receives $20 Million Contract

Stedman & Dyson Structural Engineers in San Diego has been awarded a $20 million federal contract by the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southwest, in San Diego, for structural engineering services in the Naval Facilities Engineering Command southwest area of responsibility. Places of performance will be at various Navy, Marine Corps and other government facilities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. (Source: Targeted News Service).

Solar Photovoltaic Installation Finished at SDSU

Associated Students of SDSU and local solar firm Sullivan Solar Power will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 2 for the recent 124-kilowatt solar photovoltaic installation completed at the Aztec AquaPlex, the students’ most energy-intensive facility. The student government at SDSU has proven to be one of the most environmentally progressive student collegiate bodies in the nation with the development of the Green Love Sustainability Advisory Board, according to university officials. The Green Love Board is one of the first student government boards dedicated to strengthening environmental efforts on campus. The Board and AS Council allocated funds to the solar project from a self-imposed student fee increase passed in the spring 2008, which secured funds for sustainable upgrades to Associated Students’ facilities.

“Associated Students has revolutionized the way that students look at their environment, their campus, and their own lives. Sustainability — in all senses of the word — has become a standard at San Diego State, and it stemmed from the motivations of a small group of students,” said Tyler Boden, AS president.

The event will include remarks from Boden, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, state Sen. Christine Kehoe, City Council members Marti Emerald and Kevin Faulconer, owner of Sullivan Solar Power Daniel Sullivan, SDSU PresidentStephen Weber and AS Green Commissioner Grant Mack. Student leaders Boden and Mack will receive a $286,116 rebate check from Andrew McAllister, director of programs at the California Center for Sustainable Energy, the administrators of the California Solar Initiative in the San Diego region.

“The ribbon-cutting ceremony marks the end of a three-stage process to complete the PV solar array for the AquaPlex, but it also serves as a placeholder for a huge accomplishment in sustainability, which will motivate future progression at SDSU,” said Boden.

The solar system which consists of three separate ground-mounted arrays, each with 280 photovoltaic panels, will save the university more than $35,000 a year in utility costs, according to Mack.

The large solar installation was a project two years in-the-making and was installed by Sullivan Solar Power. SDSU’s AquaPlex will generate enough solar power to reduce 299,940 pounds of carbon monoxide from the atmosphere each year and will generate roughly 241,887 kilowatt-hours per year. The project’s ground-mounted arrays are uniquely placed on a steep hillside slope adjacent to the facility.

Michael  Evans, former associate publisher of Palm Springs Life Magazine, has joined McKinnon Publishing as associate publisher/director of advertising for its wholly owned subsidiary, San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles Magazine. Publisher Mark McKinnon said Evans joins the Kearny Mesa-based company at a time when it is expanding is Web presence and specialty publications products. Before taking the McKinnon Publishing job, Evans led day-to-day print and online sales and marketing operations for 19 publications that include Palm Springs LifeThe Desert GuideArt + CultureMedical GuideWedding PlannerHistoric Inns, among others. McKinnon’s sister company, McKinnon Broadcasting, owns KUSI-TV (Channel 9) in San Diego.

Platt Student Wins First Place in Design Contest

City Heights resident Kong Meng Chho, 20, a student at Platt CollegeSan Diego School of Art and Design, has won first place in the logo design contest that commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Czech “Velvet Revolution.” His work earned him a trip to Italy and Greece. Chho’s design, along with the second and third place logos, will be displayed at Prague College in the Czech Republic. Contest judges said all of the finalists were professional, but the deciding factor in selecting Chho’s entry was the emotion his design evoked. “I was inspired by a Czech monument, but I didn’t want to copy it so I tried to capture the essence of working together and holding each other up,” he said. Using the colors of the flag of the Czech Republic, Chho said he is honored that his visual message of peace and freedom was selected. Contest judges were Kristina Rosenberg of the Timken Museum of ArtGabrielle Wyrick of the Museum of Contemporary ArtScot Jaffe of the San Diego Museum of Art and Lisa Huppert of the SDSU Department of Graphic Design.

LPGA Tournament Set for La Costa Resort and Spa

La Costa Resort and Spa announced the return of professional golf to the resort in 2010 in the form of a new Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament. Presented by J Golf, the LPGA Classic will be played March 22-28, 2010 at La Costa Resort and Spa. It will be the first event of 2010 in the mainland United States for the LPGA, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

The LPGA has signed a five-year agreement with J Golf and La Costa Resort and Spa to hold the tournament in Carlsbad through 2014. The LPGA Classic is a 144-player event. Lorena OchoaJiyai ShinCristie KerrMichelle WiePaula CreamerMorgan PresselBrittany Lincicome and Ai Miyazato are expected to headline a strong field.
