San Diego’s Fishing Industry to be Explored in Talk

Co-authors Kimber M. Quinney and Thomas J. Cesarini will share stories of San Diego’s fishing industry at Save Our Heritage Organisation’s next Third Thursday Author Series program on Nov. 19. The program is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the SOHO-operated city museum, the Adobe Chapel, at 3963 Conde St. in Old Town. Advance tickets are $25 and includes the lecture and book. San Diego has always attracted a rich diversity of immigrant groups. Between the 1880s and 1970s, many of these groups helped to create a strong and dynamic fishing industry that became a key component of the city’s identity. Waves of varied immigrants continually refreshed the industry, adapting their traditional skills and technologies to San Diegan conditions. Innovations in boat design, nets, and baiting techniques reshaped the fleets that harvested tuna and sardines from the teeming waters. On shore, canning factories sprang up, seafood markets bustled with activity, and fish restaurants filled with hungry diners. The vivid stories and fascinating photographs in this volume recapture the energy and variety that were the hallmarks of San Diego’s fishing industry.

Quinney is adjunct faculty in the Department of History at California State University, San Marcos. Cesarini is the founder and executive director of Convivio, a nonprofit organization for Italian humanities. They are coauthors of “San Diego’s Little Italy” (Arcadia 2007). Book royalties will benefit Convivio and its affiliate, the Italian Historical Society of San Diego.

Families of Fallen Coast Guard Crewmembers Assisted

Dennis Conner’s America’s Cup Experience, in association with the Maritime Museum of San Diego, will donate all proceeds from its Nov. 8 cruises and tours to the Coast Guard Foundation for its Family Disaster Relief Fund to honor the fallen crew members of CG-1705. The Coast Guard lost seven crew members from Air Station Sacramento who were aboard a C-130 aircraft that collided on Oct. 29 with a Marine helicopter off the coast of San Clemente Island. The Coast Guard Foundation’s Family Disaster Relief Fund assists families of the late servicemen in traveling to attend funeral and memorial services, among other services. “We are extremely proud to honor the sacrifice of these brave service members who lost their lives,” said Troy Sears, president of Dennis Conner’s America’s Cup Experience. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these fallen heroes.”

Open to the general public, Dennis Conner’s America’s Cup Experience and the Maritime Museum of San Diego will offer visitors and boating enthusiasts the opportunity to ride on three yachts. The yacht AMERICA, a replica of the 19th century racing yacht that first won what is now known as the America’s Cup, will be available for sails on the bay along with an opportunity to participate in a race between Stars & Stripes and Abracadabra. Admission to the Maritime Museum of San Diego, including the Star of India, is also included with the donation to ride on the America’s Cup vessels.
