BAE Systems Leads Team Competing for Navy Contract

BAE Systems in San Diego is leading a team competing for a contract with the Navy for the next development phase of the Navy’s  intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting system (ISR&T). The team consists of BAE Systems, General Dynamics, Sun Microsystems, MTCSC, Space Dynamics Laboratory, InisM and Athena consulting.

“Knowledge and intelligence are essential elements in providing an advantage to our warfighters,” said Gene Glazar, president of information solutions for BAE Systems. “This team is dedicated to ensuring that our Navy maintains information dominance in any battle space.”

The Navy is moving toward applications and services on a common infrastructure to share and disseminate vital ISR&T data for analysis and targeting in support of a wide range of missions. It allows the Navy to exchange information and data across multiple security domains, warfare areas, environments, and theaters.

The team will locate at the BAE Systems command, control, communications, computing, and intelligence development center in Point Loma. The Navy is expected to award the contract in March 2010.

UCSD Center to Study Migration and Health

UCSD will lead a new Center of Expertise on Migration and Health that will systematically study the health consequences of international population movements and developing more effective ways to address them. The new center is headed by Steffanie Strathdee, PhD, Harold Simon, chief of UCSD’s Division of Global Public Health, and Marc Schenker, public health sciences professor at UC Davis. “Such a program will serve the needs of migrants and refugees in California and around the world, by harnessing the wealth of knowledge and experience of migration and health researchers from various disciplines across all the UC campuses,” said Strathdee, who will lead the Southern hub of the center. Strathdee was the recent recipient of a grant for $100,000 over two years from The Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support development of the new center.

The research agenda at the Center of Expertise on Migration and Health will focus on four key areas: behavioral and socio-economic determinants of health, health outcomes in migrants’ communities of origin and destination, child health and health care delivery and policy. Forty scholars at 10 UC campuses have agreed to serve as the center’s initial core faculty.
