Small Businesses Invited

The San Diego Mayor’s Office will hold a free informational session for small businesses on Dec. 1 to provide information on how to reduce state income taxes by using the San Diego Regional Enterprise Zone Storefront Improvement Program, the city of San Diego government loan programs and new business tax laws. It will be held at 404 Euclid Ave., San Diego, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The session is intended for business owners, human resources managers, store managers and accountants. Reservations are required. Fireside Chat With Mayor Sanders

The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce will host the annual “Fireside Chat” with Mayor Sanders on Dec. 2 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel & Marina, 333 West Harbor Drive in Downtown San Diego.The discussions and a Q&A session will be followed by a champagne reception. UCSD Gets Funding for International Law and Regulation Lab

UCSD’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies has received the first installment in a three-year, $1.35 million gift from the Electric Power Research Institute to establish a laboratory on International Law and Regulation (ILAR) to examine when and why international law works. The Electric Power Research Institute is a Palo Alto-based nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization. The ILAR will be directed by professors Emilie Hafner-Burton and David Victor. Both recently joined the UCSD faculty. Victor formerly managed a similar program for several years during his tenure at Stanford University. “Our goal is to provide better theories and evidence so that policymakers can craft more effective treaties to solve global problems, such as curbing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring the sustainability of the planet for future generations,” said Hafner-Burton.

ILAR is expected to produce a series of scholarly and policy-related papers and articles, as well as publish three books — one on global warming policy, one on human rights and a major new book on the design and operation of international law.

Bar Association to Swear In New Officers

Patrick Hosey, a lawyer with Hosey and Bahrambeygui, will be sworn in Dec. 4 as president of the San Diego County Bar Association during its Stepping Up to the Bar annual holiday reception. Hosey will succeed Jerrilyn Malana, who will serve as immediate past president. Dan Link has been elected president for 2011 and will serve on the board as president-elect in 2010. He is a deputy district attorney in San Diego. San Diego attorneys Christopher Alexander, Jeffrey Joseph, Margo Lewis, Nory Pascua and Jon Williams were elected to serve three-year terms on the board beginning in 2010. Kristin Rizzo, incoming president of the SDCBA’s Young/New Lawyer Division, will serve a one-year term on the SDCBA board of in 2010.

Philanthropist Contributes $1.5 Million to San Diego Hospice

Businessman and philanthropist Conrad T. Prebys has contributed $1.5 million to the San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine for a new fund for patients and families who cannot afford hospice services. It will be called the Conrad T. Prebys Fund for Charitable Care. Prebys will be on hand to formally dedicate his new fund at San Diego Hospice’s holiday event, Light Up A Life, scheduled on Dec. 15. Prebys will have the honor of illuminating a towering Christmas tree honoring the memory of friends and loved ones, the highlight of the program. The community is invited to attend the free event. Muffler Shop Purchases Industrial Building

Richard’s Performance Muffler, a welding and fabrication business based in Vista, has purchased the 8,996-square-foot industrial building at 1617 Ord Way in Oceanside for $854,620.  Richard’s Performance Muffler will relocate its entire operation to the new building, located in the 32-acre, master-planned Oceanside Gateway Business Park development. The seller was PCCP bkm Oceanside II LLC. Jim Spain and Josh McFadyen of Colliers International and Joe McDermott of Coldwell Banker Commercial represented the seller.  Michael Mahoney of Colliers International represented the buyer. Gateway Business Park features 141,472 square feet of industrial/office condominiums and 34 freestanding buildings totaling 312,832 square feet. The project developer was bkm Development Co. headquartered in Costa Mesa. Alpine Throws Its 14th Annual Christmas Festival

Alpine’s 14th annual Alpine Village Christmas Parade of Lights & Snow Festival will be staged Dec. 11 under the sponsorship of the Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce, the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, Alpine Creek Town Center and San Diego Gas & Electric. The parade down Alpine Boulevard starts at 6:30 p.m. at Victoria Drive and ends at the free Snow Festival at the Alpine Creek Town Center. Highlights of the festival will include playing in snow, lighting of the Community Christmas Tree and a sing-a-long. Call the chamber at (619) 445-2722 for more information and parade entry forms.

HeadNorth Raises $53,000 from Challenge

HeadNorth Foundation, which raises money to help people with spinal cord injuries, has raised $53,000 as part of its second annual HeadNorth Challenge, a charity sports training program for the Silver Strand Half Marathon and 5K Race held in November. About 180 individuals participated in the charity program. All money raised through the program directly supports the rehabilitation and reintegration needs of HeadNorth’s recipients so they can gain greater mobility and return to an active and productive lifestyle. Sponsors of the HeadNorth Challenge were Nicolas-Applegate, Ability Center, California Bank and Trust and SHARP Rehabilitation.
