ROEL acquires Cornerstone CMS Inc.
ROEL Construction has finalized the acquisition of San Diego-based Cornerstone CMS Inc., a company that provides construction management and general construction services in California. CMS staff have joined ROEL, headquartered in San Diego, with offices in Irvine and Palm Desert, Las Vegas and Kingman, Ariz. The alliance expands ROEL’s project portfolio in the higher education, health care and assisted living sectors; and the construction management practice of the ROEL Consulting Group. ROEL and Cornerstone CMS, Inc.’s San Diego headquarters, regional offices and jobsites will continue to operate without interruption and construction operations will continue to be overseen by the same management, operational and project teams, the companies said. “Joining the family at ROEL Construction is a great opportunity for the Cornerstone CMS team to experience a wider range of construction project types, markets and delivery methods,” said Cornerstone CMS founder Jim Frager.
UCSD receives grant for major study of young brains
Researchers at UCSD looking for the biological bases of differences in human behavior will use sophisticated gene-mapping tools and imaging technology to collect data about brain development in children — thanks to a grant of $8,950,590 provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The grant was awarded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a part of the National Institutes of Health. The study, called PING (for pediatric imaging, neurocognition and genetics), represents one of NIDA’s signature projects. The UCSD-based project, which involves 10 sites throughout the country, is expected to create 25 new jobs. UCSD professors Terry Jernigan and Anders Dale are the project’s leaders; professors Linda Chang and Thomas Ernst at the University of Hawaii, and Sarah Murray of Scripps Genomics lead other components of the project.
National Philanthropy Day luncheon set for Nov. 3
The San Diego chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will hold its annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon on Nov. 3 to recognize philanthropists, volunteers, corporations and independent business owners whose year-round efforts help support programs and services throughout the community. The awards will be presented at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. The San Diego Foundation is the presenting sponsor of the program. The individuals and organizations to be honored were nominated and chosen by local nonprofit organizations in recognition of their gifts of time, talent and treasure. In some cases, honorees were nominated by multiple organizations because of their range of services from youth recreation and medical research, to leadership training and higher education.

Hervey, fund adviser to the Hervey Family Fund of The San Diego Foundation and chair of the San Diego chapter. “In difficult economic times such as these, it is the sector to which we all turn for support and services. Demand on those services is up. Donations are flat at best or down. Volunteerism is up. Overall, this sector needs and deserves great attention and appreciation. Scripps Memorial Hospital wins Consumer Choice Award
Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla has won the National Research Corporation’s Consumer Choice Award for the seventh consecutive year. The award honors hospitals which health care consumers have rated as having the highest quality and image in over 250 markets throughout the U.S. Scripps La Jolla has been given the award eight out of the past nine years. Winners are determined based on consumer perceptions collected in the annual NRC Healthcare Market Guide Study. This year, 250,000 households were surveyed.
Ghosts on the Star of India?
The San Diego Maritime Museum does not endorse the idea of ghosts on the Star of India. Nor does her first mate, Jim Davis. But both concede that lots of strange sounds and other happenings seem to emerge from the decks of the ancient vessel that was launched a week before the Gettysburg Address. Davis will discuss these strange sounds, perhaps make a somewhat skeptical conjecture about them, at the Oct. 27 meeting of the San Diego Association for Rational Inquiry. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Joyce Beers Center on Vermont Street in Hillcrest, between theAladdin and Terra restaurants.
Davis has had a long love affair with the Star. He started working on her while still in high school. Since then he has worked in nearly every area of the museum. He became the Star’s starbuck in 1980. As first mate he is responsible for assembling, training, and supervising a crew of 21st century sailors to run an 18 century vessel. New ballfields started at Cal State San Marcos
California State University San Marcos has begun Phase I construction for new baseball and softball fields. The campus has over 25 acres dedicated for the use of athletic facilities but the land has sat vacant for years while plans were developed and donors identified. Grading of the land has already begun and in the coming days irrigation will be installed along with topsoil and sod. Future plans for stands and press boxes will be part of Phase II. “Our immediate goal is to have a place on campus for our athletes to practice so that we don’t have to rely on somebody else’s fields and schedules,” said Athletic Director Tom Seitz. Since the inception of men’s baseball and women’s softball at CSUSM, the teams have been playing home games and practicing at various sites around North County. Anyone interested in helping complete the facilities project is encouraged to call the CSUSM Department of Athletics at (760) 750-7101.
